FYI on today's blowout. None of the goals were Stalock's fault. Defense (especially Callahan) were horrific. Everyone was standing around waiting for someone else to do something. Stalock was pulled for Sexsmith to wake the team up. Right off the next faceoff, Mashinster started a scrap, but that was about all the fire this team showed. Oh - Petrecki had a great hit - he hit the boards hard. He was again a little too slow to catch his guy when he threw his check.
I can't wait to hear quotes from Coach Sommer on this game.

The only think you could blame Stalock for was being too aggressive on the 4th goal, playing the puck when maybe he shouldn't have. But the actual goal itself he had no chance to save because his defense was so bad in front of him.

Of course, the fact his defense was playing so bad was probably the reason he played the puck in the first place...

Recap
Lowell turned in its second strong offensive performance in as many visits to Worcester this season, taking a 7-3 win over the Sharks on Wednesday afternoon at the DCU Center.

The Devils, who earned a 7-5 triumph in their first trip to Worcester on Oct. 17, extended their overall winning streak to three games and moved to 4-1-1-0 in their last six contests.

Nathan Perkovich led the way with a goal and two assists for Lowell, which also received scores from Vladimir Zharkov (1-1-2), Matt Taormina, Nick Palmieri, Trevor Kell, Ben Walter, and Jeff Prough. Kell and Prough both registered their first goals of the season.

Lowell scored twice on an early power play to take a 2-0 lead. Taormina converted a one-timer with a 5-on-3 advantage at 6:56, and Perkovich poked home a loose puck in the crease just 43 seconds later.

Worcester cut its deficit in half on a goal by Brandon Mashinter at 17:33 of the opening period, the rookie’s first marker since scoring twice at Lowell on Oct. 10. But the Devils took control with a trio of second-period tallies before adding two more in the third.

Tyler Eckford (0-3-3), Rob Davison (0-2-2), and Michael Swift (0-2-2) all finished with multiple assists for Lowell, and goaltender Jeff Frazee stopped 30 of 33 shots in net.

Frazer McLaren and rookie Logan Couture also netted goals for the Sharks, who have lost consecutive games for the first time this season.

Mitchell looked very rusty...and because most of the team looked terrible it was hard to see how rusty he really was compared to where he should be.

I don't know the line combos for tonight yet, but check back here later this weekend for game links to Sharkspage where I usually have the lines posted.

Has Matt Jones gotten better since getting called back up from Kalamazoo, or is he just getting lucky? He led the team in shots in that last loss and was one of the few folks who wasn't a minus (and wasn't on the ice for Worcester's SH goal.)

Much better. He's been banging in the corners, and camping out in front of the net - a lot more physical. He's been putting himself in the right spots at the right time. He hasn't been invisible like he was before. So hopefully Kzoo was a wakeup call he answered long term.

Good to hear. In Max's write up on him, he quotes Tim Burke as saying that Jones seemed to have lost some confidence after breaking his jaw to start the year last year. Maybe tearing it up in the ECHL brought it back.

I think right now Fierrero is trying to find where he fits in with this team. I wouldn't say he's lost, but getting used to new linemates and surroundings. Couture I'm just kind of "meh" on, but he seems better suited to contribute right now.

Stalock isn't the issue...it's the "veterans" we have on defense. Usually it's Callahan, tonight it was Groulx. I'd rather Sommer bench the two of them and dress Liotti and Loprieno. I don't mind when rookies make dumb mistakes because that's what they do...but it pisses me off to no end when vets make them.

The kid has played 13 pro games. He will need a lot more time to be evaluated definitively than that, whether it's good or bad. In any case, it sounds like the whole D has been poor recently...

His stat line (which I appreciate is not everything to judge a netminder by) still reads 6-6-1, 1SO, 2.60 GAA, 0.901 SV% - that's a perfectly respectable start to his career for a rookie on a sub-.500 team IMO.

@210, I'd be interested to know what you think about John McCarthy - how is he settling in? He seems to have flown beneath the radar with so many new players joining the team and I haven't seen or heard much about him. His +4 stood out amongst all the minuses on the stat sheet at least!

This.

You have guys that were penciled in as third liners having to play first line minutes, and scoring becomes that much harder...add to that offensive minded defensemen playing in key defensive situations and you have a recipe for disaster.

He is dominating just about every time he's on the ice...because he still makes some rookie mistakes he's probably not ready for full time duty yet, but he's close.

I'll be honest, coming into this season, I was not a fan. I think a good nickname for him is "Flash". Not because he's fast, but just because he seems to appear out of nowhere to be in the right place at the right time - whether it be offensively, or backchecking.

I'm on the bandwagon now :D

I'm not a big fan of ranking prospects, mostly because everyone looks for something different when they rank them. If Speed or I were to each rank the top 10 prospects on the team, odds are our lists would be different despite the fact we talk about the players all the time and sit 5' apart while the games are going on.

If there's some specific info you're looking for just ask, and I'll be glad to answer.

Moore has played pretty well...I don't think he's suffered much from his injury since he came back. He certainly is ready for spot duty this season, but his high salary ($1m) is probably going to keep him in the AHL.

Ferriero has started to look a lot better...I think the flying back and forth really killed the kid for a while, but now that he's got his legs under him he's looked good.

I think playing with Couture has been great for Zalewski...he plays with a lot more intensity than last season, and the switch to wing from center is really looking like a huge positive for him.

How long until San Jose feels they need to find him a starting spot? (i.e he is ready, either we move him, or move our starter, his time as a back-up is over)

Most teams have learned to never rush a young goaltender. Hopefully San Jose has learned that.

Petrecki has far more bad games than good ones IMO...the last game against Manchester he was particularly bad. But don't panic yet, he's still young.

Sexsmith's trade value is right around zero right now, so unless he's a throw-in somewhere he isn't going anywhere.

It sucks that he hasnt progressed thus far. Is he playing on a bottum pairing? who's his partner? Also if you had to rank the defenseman how would you rank them (i know you dont like ranking them but it would be nice if you could :) )

Sommer and Cunniff rotate the defensive pairings pretty evenly, so "bottom pair" doesn't have a whole lot of meaning...they also switch the pairings depending on who is dressed for the game. Most of the Sharkspage links for the games will include at least even strength lines, so you can get a good idea by checking those out. He kills penalties, but gets no PP time.

If I were to rank the defensemen, I'd go with

Jason Demers (good offense, good defense)
Mike Moore (poor offense, great defense)
Michael Wilson (good offense, good defense)
Danny Groulx (great offense, no defense)
Nick Petrecki (no offense, adequate defense)
Joe Callahan (poor offense, poor defense)
Joe Loprieno (adequate offense, adequate defense)
Will Colbert (adequate offense, adequate defense)

You could put each guy up or down one slot and you'd be just as right...

Or if he really sucks, trade while his value is still there.

Did I really just read that?

It's 3 months into his pro career. Of course it's going to take some time to adjust - he was too big and strong in the NCAA but he can't apply the same formula so easily in the AHL.

I can't believe Doug Wilson and the rest of the Sharks brass isn't watching Petrecki closely - they won't let their talent just fritter away. You know, sometimes facing adversity is a good thing too.

Fair enough, you qualified your remark. I just loathe threads that contemplate dealing rookies until they've had a decent shot.

His progression definitely seems to have hit a stumbling block based on the Worcester guys feedback but if you factor how he dominated physically in the NCAA, he was bound to fall from grace slightly.

Not you specifically, more HF in general, sometimes I find people are quick to write assets off on the basis of too short a timespan. In this case, less than 30 games in the pro ranks. I appreciate you weren't writing him off though - it was my overreaction:sarcasm:

210
12-20-2009, 07:59 AM
That bad?

At least right now, yes, he's that bad.

He can't keep up, he loses his man all the time, seems to wander away from where he's supposed to be a lot, often has no idea where the puck is...his one asset from college was his strength, and while he's still got that the number of guys that possess that same strength in the AHL is far more than he saw in the NCAA.

It's far too early to write the kid off, but he's outclassed right now in the AHL.

Speed
12-20-2009, 09:03 AM
That bad?

Yeah - I think some ECHL time will do hime well. Bring any pressure down a notch, let him build his confidence up. He could easily be a healthy scratch each game. Although I would like to see him with some better defensive pairing. He's been with Callahan, and he hasn't been very good either.

How about Wilson? Is his play warranting some NHL contract consideration?

I would probably put Joslin behind Moore...if Moore's cap hit was lower I have little doubt he'd be on the Worcester shuttle with Demers and Joslin.

McCarthy is an "energy" player, and fits perfectly on the Desjardins/DaSilva line...the problem with that kind of player is there's no way to know if his game translates to the next level without him actually playing at the next level. His AHL game is good enough to have him fill in in the top two lines for a game or two and he won't kill you, but right now he's really not a top 6 AHL forward.

Wilson is an interesting story. Last season he was the worst pro hockey player I had ever seen...he was pathetically bad. This season it's a whole new ballgame, and barring something really odd happening he's going to run away with my "Most Improved" player award. But despite the huge improvement, I don't think he's got NHL potential. Although he's already proven me wrong once, so it's not impossible he can't do it again.

And thanks for reading Sharkspage. ;)

eh id rather not rush him. Look what phoenix did with Boedker and Turris. Now Turris cant even produce in the ahl.

Last i checked Turris had 20 points in 30 games. Compare that with Coutures 29 points in 20 games. And take into account that Turris was competing with Kane and Van Riemsdyk for 1st overall that year.

He's on a role in the A. Let him finish out his breakout year there.

Couture, Stalock, Ferriero and Demers are going to be key parts to this club in a few years, as well as Petrecki if he turns his play around.

While probabably not as much of a sure thing (not that anyone is a "sure thing") as Couture, Stalock, Ferriero and Demers, you could throw Zalewski in that mix. He's really picked it up lately at left wing playing with Couture and Ferriero. Now add Mike Moore to that mix and the future looks pretty bright for San Jose.

How's Ferriero doing?
He ad Couture have been a great duo for us. It took a little while for Ferriero to get going when he was sent down, but he's been playing great with Couture. He gets a great jump on developing plays, and has a chemistry with Couture that I've never seen before between 2 Worcester players.

Nice to see they have some great chemistry.

Do you think Couture will be ready for a top six role next year? How about Fierrero? Also has Couture played wing at all?

I think Couture might need one more year to be a "top 6" guy, but he's certainly heading there. Same goes for Ferriero.

Couture played some wing in his brief stint last season, but has generally played center this season.

Speed, 210 - thanks for all the Worcester updates.

Keep him in the AHL for another year - we need top 6 prospects badly. Then, in 2011-12, bring these 2 up and add McGinn (or Seto?) to the line. They can either be a top 6 line or a killer 3rd scoring line.

Of course, all depends on re-signings of Pavs, Seto and Patty.

Couture and Fierrero w/ a goal and assist on each others goals.

Boxscore also implies some chemistry. And Couture now has 34 points in 23 games!!!

He played pretty well actually...the Trevelyan goal was a brain cramp play for him, and once the rust is scraped off he'll easily save the Trevelyan blast that Helminen knocked in. Both the Ferriero and Quirk goals were NHL quality shots that get by most goaltenders.

Was he moving around and playing the puck as much as he likes to?

Yeah, he looked pretty much like he usually does...this is what I wrote on the Islander's forum the night of the game.

Just my opinion on the four he gave up today...

The first was a great shot through a screen, the second was a laser deflected in front of him...neither even close to being soft goals.

The third was a blast that he made the initial save on but the puck broke through him and was knocked in the net...it was a little soft, but certainly a save he makes when the rust is knocked off.

The fourth was a "brain cramp" type of goal, a WorSharks forward wheeled the net on the backhand and it banked off the d-man and then DiPiertro, rolling into the net...I'd call this one pretty soft.

He made four or five great saves, and except for the 4th goal looked very good positionally. If he was the goalie for my team on rehab and played like that in his 2nd start, I'd be pretty satisfied that he'd be NHL ready very soon.

I remember that happening but I don't recall when...I think he played in the OT though.

Glad Mashinter is doing well. Assuming he is in the enforcer category he is putting up some really nice point totals.

I was under the impression that he was being groomed to be more of a power-forward type player. Either way, if McLaren doesn't make the jump next year, he'll have some competition.

Excellent against the "non-heavyweights", and getting better against the big boys...

Yeah, they're trying to get him to park his arse in front of the net more...he does a pretty good job of it but he's probably got to add some muscle to be really good at it.
