Moves that could improve our team (trade deadline or before)

Just wondering if you could think of any moves that could help the caps to win the cup:handclap:

Have fun:sarcasm:

Volchenkov would be a nice acquisition.

I don't doubt that Volchenkov fills a need, but I wonder if the clamour for him would be half as great if he were a different nationality.

If Volchenkov is a available at the deadline, I imagine he would be among the most coveted. Mcphee tends to go for the more economical option B.

Hamhuis is probably the best target IMO, unless the Preds go on a tear and aren't willing to subtract. Or unless he's extended, but that doesn't seem likely to me given their pipeline and ever-present budget constraints.

Take your pick:

There's a dozen or so pending UFA defensemen that would be attainable upgrades for the Caps.

The big question is who is going to be a seller. Right now preseason seller picks are playing over their heads. Colorado, LA Kings, Atlanta.

Looking at that list, I see Kim Johnsson.

To bad were so close to the cap It would be sick to have Lidstrom or Gonchar but Hamhuis sounds pretty good what would we have to lose or even Volchenkov

Lidstrom? Gonchar? Are you crazy? Not a chance in hell either of those gets dealt to the Caps this season.

Let it ride this season, but consider changes in the offseason, based on the results of contract talks from May to July with Semin and Backstrom, if they haven't both already signed new deals by then.

I'm not sure what I interpreted wrong. I read the whole thing. Seems to me you want Lidstrom or Gonchar, but would be fine with Hamhuis or Volchenkov.

You think cap space is the obstacle? Gonchar wouldn't likely be traded in the East even if the Pens did somehow collapse, and Lidstrom isn't getting traded, ever, period.

Kinda agree with Drake here, I mean if Jose / Varly combo can sustain an entire season, and the D simply plays as well as the prior season I think we could truly go the distance. That said, the off season should be a telling sign for the future of the franchise.

I think you need to try to make a move at the deadline for defense if you can clear the requisite cap space.

This is what irks me more than anything about having TFS on the roster. That's just additional deadline cap space going down the tubes. If he's in Hershey, the Caps could pototentially accumulate ~$500k more in cap space than having him as a healthy scratch on most nights. Granted, there's virtually no way they'd accumulate that much with injuries and the like, but every little bit helps whne you're up against the salary cap.

Now, get Nylander to Russia (or Detroit) and this cap space discussion is all academic.

I've said this before. There were scenarios where the Caps win the Cup last season. Among them were having a healthy Green to get them over the top past the Penguins and winning the 1 seed by having a better record against the bad teams last season. Therefore not having to play the Penguins until the ECF.

This season is the same in my view. There will be realistic scenarios where the Caps win the cup. I think adding a veteran defenseman for the top 4 at the deadline will open up more scenarios, but it can be done as they sit now.

One move....a defensive upgrade who is also a great leader. This team needs leadership. Obviously current leadership isn't teaching accountability.
