As a hardcore Rider fan, I love it....for games other than the gold medal. Not sure I want to go down in history wearing "Rider" jerseys on a hockey rink...but whatever!

Take that, other CFL fans.

I thought they were going to wear them every game and I was not happy. But if its only for a pre-tournament game, and then for just one game, whatever. Wouldn't be happy if it was every game though.

I hope the maroon jerseys do make an appearance though, loves those things.

Pathetic way of trying to sell more Jersey's.

Why is this pathetic? There is nothing wrong with making money if you can. Canadian junior program has been a great success for Hockey Canada, why not get some money for it?

I think it's a lousy idea.... to wear it pre tournament? fine, no problem with that.... but they are representing the entire country of Canada, not the population of Roughrider fans. What about fans who cheer for CFL teams other than the Roughriders?'

No offense to Roughrider fans, but it's pretty silly that a Canadian national team is paying tribute to the local minor league football team. Hope they come to their senses.

I think it's good for Saskatchewan as a whole... usually happenings jump from Alberta to Ontario. Were actually lucky to have a pro team considering our population compared to other provinces haha. I think the jerseys will make the local fans go insane to see hockey canada representing them... the atmosphere is going to be awesome

This is Team Canada, not Team Saskatchewan. In TSN's article reporting this, it's pretty clear that the rest of the country is not happy about this. Will the Mens Olympic Team wear black and orange to pay tribute to the BC Lions?

Two completely different situations. Trust me, until you've lived in that province for a while, you really don't "get" what the 'Riders mean to Saskatchewan. It's not an exaggeration when you say that Saskatchewan lives and dies with how the Roughriders that week.

I mean, come on, it's the only province where hiring a new head coach in February can be front page news on every paper available, completely over-ruling ANYTHING.

Plus, Saskatchewan has put more players into the NHL than any other province, and more than most countries on the planet, so I don't see anything wrong with Hockey Canada wanting to do something to make it "Saskatchewan's" tournament. Especially because it will be DECADES before this tournament is back in Saskatchewan.

Once again, they are Team Canada, not Team Saskatchewan. It doesn't matter if it will be decades before the tournament is back there, how long until the tournament is in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, or PEI? That is what will never happen, so I have no sympathy for Saskatchewan, who had it in 1991.

It's probably fair to say that BC lives and breathes the Canucks just as much as Saskatchewan does the Rough Riders, why not just have the mens Olympic team wear the Canucks jersey to honor them? (it'd be a heck of a lot more relevant too since Canuck is a slang term for Canadian citizens.)

There is no reasonable justification for this move. I don't expect them to have Flames and Oilers tributes when it comes to Alberta in a few years, and everyone here will tell you Alberta lives by the Battle of Alberta.

Its a joke of a move for sure. If its only for a pre-tournament game and a random seating round game then whatever, but its a joke.

awesome! i look forward to seeing Team Canada wear blue when the tournament is in Québec. ;)

Maybe even include a Fleur de Lys in there :handclap:

I have no problem with it, it's a money generator for hockey Canada and a source of pride for the Saskatchewan community. Maybe we will see more of this type of stuff in the World Junior tourney across the country. Celebrating culture of all sport within the region of each host city.

Now a Fleur de Lys would be a little more controversial, but blue isnt out of the question. Look at the jersey Wayne Gretzky sported in his one appearance at the WJC.

This really bothers me.... what a BLEEPING JOKE.

How does someones STUPID idea like this actually get approved? WHO THE HELL APPROVED THIS?

To honour the Roughriders? Honestly, it's a freaking FOOTBALL team (I am a CFL fan I might add). They have NOTHING to do with HOCKEY CANADA, or the deep roots behind JUNIOR HOCKEY IN CANADA. This isn't a team from Saskatchewan, hell, there will be maybe one or two kids from sask on the team?

I could see this as a small ball promo/marketing stunt within Saskatchewan, and wear it for a game or two... But not the whole tournament..... thats just wrong. NO ONE will be buying these HORRID jerseys anywhere else in Canada with the OLYMPICS TWO MONTHS AFTERWARDS. GJ you will sell them in an extremely small market that is Saskatchewan.

TEN THUMBS DOWN - FREAKING JOKE.

Nothing to do with the actual topic at hand but there are plenty of very strong candidates from Saskatchewan/playing on Saskatchewan based teams who could conceivably make the team this year:

Sask. Boys:
Jordan Eberle (Lock)
Braydon Schenn (Lock)
Jared Cowen (Lock IMO)
James Wright (Lock if returned from Tampa Bay,although I doubt it)

Sask. Based teams:
Colton Tuebert - Regina(Lock)
Travis Hamonic - Moose Jaw (Long shot)

Linden Vey and Cody Eakin (Swift Current) have both played extremely well this season as well but likely neither will have a shot as they didn't get invited to summer camp.

While I think it's weird to "honour" a CFL team, I actually really like the look of the green jersey.

I support this move. they'll sell a lot of jerseys. and it's a fun thing to do. I really do not see the downside. maybe I am not hyper enough.

I basically agree with you, but they are "only" wearing them for 1 round robin game, and will also wear them if they are in the gold medal game.

Still, I think that even wearing it during the tournament itself is an insult to the country. You're supposed to wear the colors of your county's flag, NOT the colors of the local minor league football team. It would be okay if they only wore it once during an exhibition game (before the tournament, NOT during the round robin), and hell they can still sell them!!!.... But I want to be cheering for the guys representing the flag of my country, not this.

Ya it was also embarassing when Canada sported the yellow and black jersey's to honour a Winnepeg team at the World Cup a few years ago, those were ugly as hell but I still saw lots of people wearing them.

Honestly I don't think it is a big deal and I think it would be kind of cool if we did see host teams wear jersey's that paying tribute to the region. A Quebec one would pe pretty sharp. The jersey still says CANADA not Saskatchewan and has a MAPLE LEAF not a bushel of wheat or Roughrider logo.

And some people seriously underestimate the love for the Riders in Saskachewan. I lived in Edmonton for a bit and went to some BOA games and they have nothing on Rider fans are like a religous extreme, they are intense.

Totally different situation, that was to honor the 1920 Olympic hockey team, the first one to win Olympic gold representing Canada. They even had "Canada" on the back instead of their last names, like the '20 team did. That was a pretty significant and symbolic accomplishment in Canadian hockey history... what did the Roughriders do worth honoring by the entire country?
