We made the trip to Vancouver for game 2 and I must say, most of the people we met were good natured and kidded us about our Silvertips sweaters and were geniuinely interested to talk to us, but we also caught a large amount of abuse, quotes like "I hope you crash into a tree on your drive back to Everett" and alot of anti-american stuff about George Bush (whom I did not vote for) and Chevys (which I don't drive). My wife and I had things thrown at us, including a water bottle by some 12 year old kid (the usher dragged the kid down to appologize to us (THANKS!)). We heard comments about "that's what a hockey stick looks like" etc.

I know Canada is rightly proud of hockey. I know there is alot of resentment at the Jets and Nords leaving. I also understand that U.S. foreign policy is not popular (even here in the states), but when I have traveled in Europe, I have been accepted as an individual, not as a subject of the Bush war machine.

I just went to a hockey game to cheer for my team. :shakehead

Go tips!

Well Mike, that's sad to hear.
When I've gone to Giants games in the past, I haven't seen much abuse aside from some drunk hecklar throwing some insults at Thunderbird fans (They have a decent fanclub that makes some trips).
Still, Vancouver fans might not have a big reputation for 'bad' fans, but in my experience, there are quite a few Vancouver sports fans that would feel right at home in Philly...especially at BC Lions (CFL) games... Maybe it's the higher alcahol content in the Canadian beer :joker: .

Most visiting fans are going to get some verbal ribbing, but throwing objects is definitely less than acceptable. Good on the usher to drag the kid before you :)

It's too bad when things like that happen, but I really don't think its limited to Vancouver. I think anywhere you go you're going to get your share of classless morons, whether it's Vancouver, anywhere else in Canada, or the USA. It's pathetic, but there are a lot of stupid people out there. Hopefully the experience doesn't give you the impression that we are all like that, or deter you from returning.

P.S. LEAVE THOSE DAMN COWBELLS HOME!!!

You guys are right, and we don't blame Vancouver fans for a few jerks. I'd sure like to hear from Giants fans who came to Everett for game 3;

1) How did you like our barn?

2) Did you get treated rudely by a bunch of jerks?

3) How was the fan bus experience vs going independently (if you've done both)

4) Was it loud enough for you, or do you prefer the library atmosphere :nopity:

5) GO TIPS!!!!

I went to game 4 in Everett, and:

1) Quite nice
2) No, everyone was nice to us, just making Vancouver fans look worse.
3) Only drove, never used the fan bus
4) OH MAN THOSE COWBELLS ARE ANNOYING!!
5) Go Giants! (not over yet)

I found watching hockey in Everett was quite a different experience from watching in Vancouver. It was interesting how OFTEN the Everett crowd cheers - they seem to cheer anything and everything, including icing, dump ins and the Tips chipping the puck off the boards and out of their own zone. I guess it's partly the excitement of a big game, and partly maybe a bit of a lack of general hockey knowledge (certainly can't blame them though, they're great fans for a new franchise). Also, how do you stand those cowbells?! That really is the most irritating noise in the entire world! All in all it would have been fun, if not for the awful effort the Giants put in.

Too bad you couldn't come up to game 5 eh? You would have had more fun than me :shakehead

I'm taking our seven-year-old tomorrow to see game six at Everett. This will be her first hockey game and we're looking forward to it. I haven't been to a Giants game in Vancouver but I have seen the Canucks. I have never had any problem with the fans on the account of being an American. But perhaps my experience wouldn't have been quite the same had I been wearing the jersey of an opposing team. ( Back in '91, when I still watched baseball, I went to Milwaukee to see the Mariners play. The Brewers fans kidded me some but we had a great time. Heck, after the ribbing they even bought me beer. )

And I agree: THOSE DAMN COWBELLS HAVE GOT TO GO !!!

I know what you mean, there is a real unconditional love thing going on, where the fans are never critical of the team, even those fans that know something about the game. The energy level at most of the games is like no building I have ever been in, NHL or otherwise.

I noticed throughout the season that weekday crowds of about 4,000 seemed to get what was going on more than a crowd of 7,000 on a Saturday, and although enthusiatic, actually understood what was a good play and what was not so smart!

I remember a few years ago I was at the tri-cities tournament and HATED how spokane fans would have those cow-bells ringing. but now after watching the UW hockey (i have a cowbell for them and try to use it) and the everett playoffs, I like it. you just have to understand it. and some advice, its a hockey game NOT a library. BE LOUD! and don't wait for the pa announcer/scoreboard to tell you to be noisy!
