Rabid Ranger 03-31-2004, 12:55 AM IMO he is making a great push to be there in August, especially if a guy like Mike York or even Jeremy Roenick decides to not play in order to recover from their respective injuries. He would look great playing with a sniper like Mark Parrish.

Imagine Gomez with players like Tkachuk, possibly Hull, Modano and Amonte on his line? Wow :win
I'd love to see Scotty get some recognition like that. He really silenced the critics this year with a monstrous second half and is on the verge of putting up 70 points for the first time since his rookie season. If his linemates can keep up with him, he'll be a tremendous asset to the U.S. team.
4check22 03-31-2004, 01:30 AM I like that Gomez has 22 more points then Gagne in the same number of games played this season.
Yeah, and Gagne makes $1.4 million more than Gomer. Poser.
Jason MacIsaac 03-31-2004, 02:13 AM Gomez will make the team.....39 points in his last 25 games is just crazy......I don't think Elias got that hot during the 2001 season.

..and Gomez plays on a team that has no offense...
Ronnie Bass 03-31-2004, 03:17 AM Actually I think that Gomer is a no-brainer for Team USA, the more debateable player to discuss might be Gionta, can he make it on the team? He's got 20+ goals and nobody plays harder than him and wasn't Theo Fleury one of the Canadian stars in the 2002 Olympics?

Gagne is an overrated pile of puke and I want no part of him on team Canada.
As for Gomez...is there really any doubt that he would be there? I think of him as a shoe-in for the team and will probably play a big role on the team. He is one of the "next" American superstars. It should be fun to watch him with wingers like Brett Hull.

Scotty really deserves a nomination.

Funny you should say that about Gagne...incidentally, that's how most people on these boards regarded (and some still regard) Gomez before his explosion this year.
IMO, Gagne is at a point in his career similar to where Gomez was in 2001-2003. Gagne seemed to put it all together with his 66 point campaign 2 years ago, just like Gomez's 70 point rookie year, only to fall victim to injury and a poorly defined role on the team. A lot of Philly fans are pissed at him, and rightly so, for his statistical regression. The Flyers' revolving door personnel policy has hurt Gagne a lot; if Bobby Clarke ever refills his Ritalin prescription and decides to give Gagne consistent minutes on the second line with consistent linemates (a la Elias and Gionta), he's too talented not to flourish. His confidence the last few years has been hurt by injuries and inconsistent roles on the team.
MattNJD 03-31-2004, 09:17 AM Gomez should be an absolute slam dunk for Team USA. I would be beyond shocked if he wasn't named to the squad

It's not Clarke, but Hitchcock.
Hitchcock considers Gagne to be our best defensive winger (which he is). Therefore he played him with Primeau and Kapanen on our "shutdown line" for the first half of the season. Playing with Primeau as you center is no way to put up points.
The day that Zhamnov was aquired Gagne has played on a scoring line with a playmaking center and shockingly has started to fill the net again.

I would think a guy like Jason Blake, who plays a similar style of game as Gionta would get the nod if a smallish pest type with offensive ability is wanted on the U.S. team by the management team.
Devilsfanatic 03-31-2004, 01:52 PM As far as Im concerned, he's there.......but Canada will still win :p:
But that's in September, for now...... LETS GO :devils

Yeah, but that 70 point rookie season was a total fluke, remember? :lol

Blackjack 03-31-2004, 06:12 PM I'd take Gagne on my team any day of the week. He's more like Elias than Gomez, a good defensive winger that can score lots of goals, I think that the only reason he gets compared to Gomez is that they're both young offensive stars on rival teams.
Gomez is averaging 64 points per full season in his career, that makes him a bona-fide 1st liner. All we need now is a true 1st line rw (I love Gionta but the guy is more of a 2nd liner IMO). Paging Mr. Suglobov. Actually, if Parise is all we hope he is, we could put Kozlov there too...
DownFromNJ 03-31-2004, 06:37 PM Gomez could always go back to Wing, with Parise centering.

I completely agree about Gagne. I'd love to have him on my team. The only rag on him is his somewhat questionable ability to stay healthy.
Also, I think there is no reason to split the very productive EGG line - Gionta may not be a 1st liner in terms of skill, but he adds the dimension that is needed for Elias and Gomez to thrive. Suglobov could very well be a first line winger though - he just needs some more work on his self-control.
