cheesymc 07-10-2009, 09:48 PM Doesnt Smid sort of remind you of a Euro version of Reghr? They have similar size and edge, and both are defensive oriented. I think he is due to break out as most physical defensive dmen do (Reghr, Komisarek, etc.) I think he would fit in nicely with the ducks and he could be had relatively cheap as it appears Edmonton doesnt have him in their plans. I wonder if the ducks scouts might be interested in reaquiring him...
Our current depth would be complete:
Scotty & Whitney (Id like them to play less than 23 minutes and give scotty less "hard" PK minutes so we can save him for one last playoff run)
Wiz & Smid (They could play about 20-22 or the tougher "matchup")
Sbisa & Boyton (They have the skill to fill in the top 4)
Brookbank is best if he plays less than 50 games a season.
Our D in on our "AHL" club will have alot of depth too:
Mikkelson / Mitera
Fester / McCarthy
DeGray/Bickell/Regan/Veidman
-------------
By the way, what forwards are going to be pushed back to the AHL? Seems like we need to replace Moen so Bodie might be the choice, but that means Miller or Carter are going down, or Nokie might have to be traded... Especially if Rob Nied resigns (which is likely).
Sorry for the messy post...
cheesymc 07-10-2009, 09:51 PM Forgot Salsa is in the AHL too... at least we have the depth to replace Boyton and Brookbank if necessary during the year if there is a trade.... just wondering who the Alpha dman that will come out of that group of 9...
Hockey Duckie 07-11-2009, 01:58 AM I would like the org to re-acquiring Smid. He's a nice defensive d-man with some handles and speed. At 6'3" and 226lbs, he will be imposing. But what would the Ducks give up to get him? A draft pick? Seeing that Oil don't have plans for him. And if the Ducks do get him back, then the Ducks got more for Pronger!
Smid - 202 games played.
Wis - 185 games played.
Forward thinking, acquiring Smid would be insurance should Wis bolt next season.
cheesymc 07-11-2009, 01:51 PM Smid might cost a 2-3 round pick plus a depth guy like Ryan Carter or AHL guy like Festerling/Salsa...
I dont remember the Ducks ever have a Regher/Komisarek big/nasty type of shut down guy... so Smid has that 50/50 chance to do that next year or the year after...
I just think it might be good "buying low" since Edmonton doesnt seem high on Smid....
Talentless Practise 07-11-2009, 01:56 PM While i'm not against it, i think it might be one reclamation project too many. I mean, we're depending on Whitney, Boynton and Brookbank/McCarthy already to get back on the horse.
I guess if the price is right i'd take the gamble.
caliamad 07-11-2009, 02:05 PM I think it makes sense next year, when Scotty, Brookbank, and Boynton are most likely gone.
Right now we have too many guys trying to fill one or 2 spots:
Sbisa, Festerling, Mikkelson, Brookbank, Boynton, Mccarthy, Mitera.
snarktacular 07-11-2009, 02:12 PM Lowe's still in the organization. He's a proud *******, almost as much as Burke.
Smid is also the only remaining piece of the Pronger trade. Well the prospects taken with the picks are still with the organization, but Smid is the only piece returned directly.
Depending on how much pull Lowe still has (if he wasn't just kicked upstairs to a figurehead role because he was so spectacularly wrong on, well, everything), Smid might cost more than he should based on his abilities, potential, and likeliness to reach that potential. Especially to Anaheim, even with Burke gone.
PS, if you're counting, the Pronger picks turned into 60% of Nash (trade up), Eberle, and 2/3 of Allan Rourke (Rourke + 3rd round pick to Edmonton for Anaheim's pick to NYI).
PPS It's amusing that Smid is up for RFA. What's the matter Edmonton, can't get him signed as an RFA because he's asking for a lot while not proving much and you have lots of other big contracts? Gee, I wonder if paying 4.25 million for an unproven, inconsistent rookie and altering the payscale of all RFAs had anything to do with it?
TheJoeMan 07-11-2009, 02:15 PM We don't need Smid, definitely not for this season at least. We have quite a few young D-men being groom to take spots in the next few seasons. We're done this year plain and simple. If Edmonton cares at all about asset management they'll retain Smid for as long as they can.
McDonald19 07-11-2009, 04:21 PM We have enough d-men.
Duckstudd269 07-12-2009, 03:05 AM I didn't like the idea at first, but the more I think about it, the more I like it. Although I don't think it will happen.
Offer
To Anaheim: Smid
To Edmonton: Festerling, Miller, and 3rd.
Edmonton gains a 3rd round pick, decent defensive prospect, and a cheap depth player for someone not in their plans.
Nikko 07-12-2009, 11:14 AM I really think that this move would make us significantly better. We don't have too many dmen right now, we have too many 5-7 dmen right now. This would be a piece we need.

Unless their in love with Miller I can't see them doing that, but I like the idea. I think Smid/Sbisa would be an awesome 3rd line pairing to start the season.
Adding brookbank or Mikkelson in instead of Festerling might get it done.
cheesymc 07-12-2009, 02:17 PM I wish the ducks didnt sign Boyton; they should have got a vet like DeVries/Mckee (could have been a great presence/mentor to a guy like Sbisa). I think Boyton is too undisciplined and loses fights as much as Montador... He really should be a 5-6th dman on a good team. He also hasnt played as well as he has since his Boston days (when he score 10+goals and was an allstar). I also dont want a guy like Sbisa to play on the top 4... he really needs to earn it over the course of the season if he is that good... but the kid is just 19!!!
Smid would be a really cheap option, the ducks could promise a bigger role for a lower contract... like a 2 years / 2 million contract.
I dont think Lowe would trade Smid to Toronto because of Burke, but I dont see Lowe asking more from the ducks... Edmonton needs bigger forwards and Carter + Salcido + mid round pick should be enough. I think if you wait a year, Smid's value could go up. I just hope Smid holds out and pisses Lowe off so that it forces the trade.
(Besides, there aren't many dmen in free agency that would be cheap and have updside... Backman, Bouillon, de Vries, McLaren???)

You're really underrating Boyton and Sbisa. Both of these guys are better than Smid in my opinion. Sbisa is going to really surprise people in Anaheim, I have no doubt about it.
But why would Tammbalini even want to trade Smid? He's young and just coming into his own. Plus no one is going to give up one of their best young players for our fringe players. It doesn't work like that.
