TSN has a poll up on their site asking:
With Joe Sakic retired, who would you pick to take his place at the Olympic orientation camp in August?
They list the options as:
- Marc Savard (currently leading voting)
- Jason Spezza
- Steven Stamkos
- Mike Cammalleri
- Devin Setoguchi
- Other
I'm not Canadian. But I'm a hockey fan. And I think the question is pretty damn intruiging. So I'll open this up to everyone to declare and maybe discuss who they'd choose to take Sakic's spot.
As for myself, I'd go with the best player out of the group, Marc Savard.

Savard easily, looking forward to him having the opportunity. It'd be good for Hockey Canada's image as well.

I should vote for Savard but I will say Stamkos since I'm sure Savard will win regardless.

None of those players will supply the intangibles Sakic would have, so the question I have is: Will Canada go for a veteran who can provide some leadership, some sort of "specialist", or a young gun? If I had a gun to my head I'd go with Savard, but I get the feeling he'll be kept off the roster at all costs.

Yep. Because of the think heads leading Hockey Canada. He obviously isn't going to get picked if guys like Andy McDonald were invited in place of him in the first place.

Or Lucic..
McDonald is probably the fastest player at that camp, and is a natural winger....while I don't think he has a real shot to make the team, I don't think Savard does either. There are about 10 centers ahead of him on the depth chart.
Savard doesn't have a shot to make Team Canada, while I agree he deserves to be there. It just seems like he'd be filling out a spot though.

Jordan Staal, Milan Lucic and Andy Macdonald are invited to the camp....... Jason Spezza, Marc Savard are not. Someone needs to telk Hockey Canada that you can't tank for the 1st overall pick in international tournaments

savard was never in the running
there is still a perception that he is soft, he is small, he is not good enough defensively to get the job done without the puck against the swedes or russians in a knock-out game, and his skating is suspect. Folks, this is the highest level of hockey played on this particular planet: it will be brutally intense, fast paced, cerebral and canada will be under pressure in every contest. Frankly, for all canada's vaunted depth, they will be shortening the bench to 3.5 lines (and less) and 3 pairs (and maybe 2.5 pairs) of D when it counts.
Marc Savard isn't good enough to play minutes in that situation at that level
