A one-year deal.

One year, that's interesting. Being totally ignorant of the CBA - is he looking at being any category of UFA next summer? Is it possible? Is it possible that he accepted a low offer on the hope that he'd make the team and earn a bigger payday next year?

Only a year, hmmmmm

Sign him to trade him?

If I were him I would have asked for the one year deal. I would want to see if they give me a shot. Works for both sides really. Doesn't make anyone commit too much either way.

Good to see regardless. Eventually we need to see if these guys we draft can develop at the NHL level and Salcido has nothing more to prove in the AHL. I'd much rather see him as our 6th d-man than Mikkelsson

Two-way deal for 550k.

Two-way deal for 550k.

That is shocking to me. I would have expected him to demand a one way deal.

He'll be restricted at the end of the year, his ELC only just expired.

At least one of Mikkelson, Salcido and Festerling need to be dealt, we have a logjam of young guys who need playing time on the third pairing.

One or two of Mikkelson, Festerling and Salcido need be to full-timers on this team next season. I hope Salsa wins out because there's no way he goes back to the AHL a happy man. Third different AHL city in three years? If he doesn't make the team he needs to go to one that will play him.

Mikkelson didn't show he was ready to play in the NHL IMO. I think he needs another year at least in the AHL before he is ready. Festerling although timid, looked much more comfortable playing in the NHL.

He has no leverage to swing a one-way deal since his one-way experience consisted all of two games.

Well the KHL or Europe is his leverage. I just figured after three AHL seasons he wouldn't have any desire to play in the A again. But I am happy. Hope he finally gets a shot.

1 year and 2-way probably go hand-in-hand. He would agree to 2-way, but only with 1 year.

Makes sense. He hasn't made the team and he hasn't established anything. He makes the team by the end of this contract or he's moved/let go to another team.

So is it confirmed that he will be a RFA at the end of next season?

In reading the CBA, it looks relatively certain that he will be a UFA at the end of next season, which is probably why he only signed a one year deal. Ducks will be forced to do something with him (play or trade) as he is subject to waivers next season. If he doesn't fit into their plans, look for a trade rather than lose him to waivers.

I think that because of his age and lack of NHL experience, he becomes a UFA at the end of this season. I think the only way he is still a RFA is if he plays 78 NHL games this year. At least that's how I read the CBA.

That sucks. This has been a very bad day for our defense.

Yeah, you're right Salcido will be 25 before the end of this season so unless he plays another 78 games then he will be unrestricted. I assumed he was younger because he was drafted in 2005.

Well, he damn better have a good camp and have a breakout year so we can actually use him in 78 games. At $550k, it would be great budgetwise too if he could manage to make the team.

Oh and btw, if injuries stopped him from playing 78 games next season, would that still make him an UFA at the end of the year?

I believe he'd still be a UFA. I couldn't find anything in the CBA that made any reference to injuries.

The CBA doesn't mention anything about injuries so I assume he'll still be an UFA if he misses games due to injuries.

We clearly need to move one of Mikks, Festerling, or Salcido, so in a way this one year deal is a good thing.

It will be interesting who wins out among these three (especially now with Steve McCarthy onboard).

I kind of want Mikkelson, not now maybe, but in the future. He just wasn't ready, but he will be and his mistakes will be limited. I still see him being a #4 D-man in the future. He is mobile, he can play physical and he can move the puck. He needs to get a little more poise to his game, but that will come with experience.

He isn't the kind of guy that will be playing safe hockey like Festerling, so it's not surprising that Festerling looked better in his rookie year. Defensive defensemen that plays safe and mature needs less time to develop their game.
