Puckgenius 07-03-2009, 02:01 AM WHich line was better for you devils back then.
Elias-Gomez- Gionta or Elias-Arnott-Sykora?
What were the pros and cons of each and how did they differ?
Devils9789 07-03-2009, 02:04 AM Hands down, the A-line.
Their chemistry was absolutely unbelievable.
Devilsfanatic 07-03-2009, 02:04 AM The A-Line. They won a Stanley Cup. Elias produced 96 points, Arnott had 56, and Sykora had 81. They were a force for 3 years or so. The EGG line had one good season. I loved that line, heartbroken when they were broken up. But that's in the past.
The Grinder 07-03-2009, 02:08 AM ZZpop aint to shabby either.
Gunnar Stahl 30 07-03-2009, 02:08 AM the egg line was good for about 3 months, maybe, then lrob broke them up because no one else could score. elias was by far the most important part of the egg line, he missed half the year and when he came back they were unreal, especially patrik, thats some of the best hockey he has played
How could anyone forget the A Line? A Line wins and it's not close. The chemisty between all 3 players was just incredible.
EliasFTW 07-03-2009, 02:35 AM A Line all the way.
Richer's Ghost 07-03-2009, 02:38 AM A-line.
Arnott. He was the pacemaker that this team now misses. Sykora rode coat tails, but was awesome nonetheless.
Bring back 25 campaign started about 3 weeks ago and I'll gladly keep it going.

yakitate304 07-03-2009, 03:08 AM Rupp - Holik - Zubrus
Clearly the best.

The funny thing was, a lot of people had wet dreams by how big that line was. Even dubbed them The Crash Line, 2.0.
What a joke.

I remember a pre-season quote on TG's blog with someone saying something like "once that line gets puck possession, who's going to be able to get it from them?"... clearly a trick question, because I don't think they ever had the puck in the offensive zone.

the 750-lb line. otherwise known as the 750-lb sack of crap. I guess in theory it could have worked if Bobby wasn't 30whatever and Rupp was replaced by Randy McKay and someone didn't realize "why is Zubrus on the 4th line?"
and whoever wrote that quote didn't realize that possession is great and all, but you actually have to do something with it. cycling until you get gassed and then watching the other 4th line blow the doors off you up the ice, that's not really useful possession.

Someone should've told that to the ZZPop line late in the season. They'd cycle, cycle, cycle, make the same back-pass to the same spot in the corner every time, and lose the puck. When they were really cooking, they were making the ugly plays getting it to the paint, even if it was just a prayer pass.
Scottyk9 07-03-2009, 04:34 AM A-Line

Beat me to it, I'd even say that Shanahan - Sundstrom - MacLean was better than the EGG line. A line than these 4 and then Egg...
Blackjack 07-03-2009, 10:39 AM While I think the A line was better, some people seem to forget that for about 6 or 7 weeks, the EGG line was completely unstoppable, they were scoring something like 2 or 3 goals a game. Obviously they couldn't maintain that pace, but it seemed like every time they stepped on the ice, they would score or almost score.
Game Breaker 07-03-2009, 11:01 AM The fact that I'll go to a party and find a devils fan and we always manage to talk about the A-line says it all. I'd kill to have it back.

Best line in hockey for a couple of seasons, scored clutch goals, always an offensive threat, unbelievably creative. I became a seaon ticket holder because of them.

Agreed. When I meet a fellow Devils fan for the first time, the same three things come up:
1. Brodeur is God
2. Stevens was a beast
3. The A-line rocked everybody's ****

The goal in that game (2nd?) where Elias came in on a breakaway but held onto the puck until he was behind the net and then backhanded it out to Sykora without ever looking sums up the chemistry that line had.
Oh yeah, A-Line and it's not close.
OnDaMark 07-03-2009, 01:59 PM How can anyone even put the A Line and the EGG line in the same sentence? A-Line all the way was the best Devils line ever.
Zubrus on any line is a deficit.

I consider that to be one of the defining A line goals. I remember a similar goal where Elias cut across the slot and had a shot opportunity, but did a slick pass to sykora which sent the goalie diving across the crease. Of course sykora one-time passed it right back to Elias who just dumped it into the wide open net.
The call sounded something like this
Elias shoo--, OH! He should've shot tha-- SCORES!!
It was hilarious.

Absolutly agree with the first part, but I don't understand your remark about Zubrus.
First, he's a very good player and one of the most complete players of our roster. He's big, he's physical, and he's a very complete two-way player. I'm more than happy with him in the team. Second and above all, he wasn't on the EGG line anyway as the line was filled with Elias, Gomez and Gionta.
But yeah, the EGG line doesn't deserve to be in the same sentence as the A-line, that's for sure. Maybe the Parise line could one day be comparable to the A-line but that's far from guaranteed...

Actually not to much, Broten played with MacLean mostly the whole playoffs. Lemieux was on their wing in round 1 against the B's and Richer and Lemieux played with Carpenter in round 2 against the Pens. Broten played with Richer really mostly only on the power play. One of my favorite plays ever was the back door pass Broten sent to Richer on the power play for the opening goal in game 6 against the Flyers. It was a thing of beauty.

Yeah I know it wasn't a normal line, rather an emergency line used in OT and as a last minute desperation situations only... but I do remember a great OT game winner Broten chipped over to Richer who was already moving up to the line before the puck even dropped... I think that was against Philly, not positive. It's never on Youtube either

You are going to make me go digging through old tapes to find the play. I do recall it, I think it was against the B's. One thing I did like about Lemaire was he adjusted his lines round by round and within games based on the moment and who was playing hot, etc. Other than the crash line, the top 3 lines changed so much it was hard to call any one a normal line.

Everything except using his size to his benefit. If he just was a tad more physical he could have really scored a few more 50 goal seasons...
My favorite thing was when during the lockout when asked about it he said "We should be playing hockey." and then got in trouble with the NHLPA.
I just wish he had taken a hardest shot competition... I bet he was every bit as fast as Iafrate back in the day.

It definitely was. I can honestly remember being at a game one year and in the seats behind the net just above the glass and everytime he wound up my sister and I started ducking down in our seats just in case.
