Game 4, 2000 Stanley Cup finals... Hits the post killing a penalty. Next shift, same penalty kill, beats Ed Belfour. Ties the game. Rafalski scores a minute later and we take a 3-1 lead in the series...

For being a total warrior. Thanks for everything, John. We love you and we'll miss you but it was time for a change. Good luck in Chi-town!!!!!:yo::yo::yo::yo::yo::yo::yo:

You are my favorite player of all time. The only jersey I have owned since 01.

My identity as a hockey fan has a lot to do with you. Playing roller hockey with me madden jersey on I got the eventual nickname of mad dog and that stuck with me for the rest of my playing days.

The playoffs where he was really one of the keys to victory was 2003. In 2000 he was a nice supplemental piece, but in 2003 he absolutely was one of the top reasons we won the cup.

John McMullen and John Madden share the same initials and how appropriate that is - if Daneyko hadn't come before him - Madden would be Mr. Devil... a warrior and my favorite Devil which was a hard sell after being drawn to the offense that came from 44 and my namesake before him.

I hope we see him back someday behind the bench... he's got a little Daneyko, a little Stevens, a little Burns, and a little bit of every underdog ever to don the Devils logo inside him. Told by his college coach at Michigan he would never make it to the NHL... how bittersweet it must be for him to now move away from the team that gave him his dream.

I'm glad he is at least going to a team I can cheer for him to do well with - and maybe even hoist another cup someday soon. (as I look to my left and gaze at the picture from 2003 of him lifting the cup )...

http://www.hittheice.com/pics/8x10s/9447.jpg

His jersey takes permanent position next to the Richer one on the wall now. I'm left with only a Parise one to wear now (unless something unexpected happens).

Peace out JM

Considering that Madden took a one year contract for about what Pando is getting paid, it really boggles the mind. Lou didn't even make an offer! I guess he really was pissed that we let Carolina beat us in the dying seconds of game 7. Never mind that a year ago, Madden at one point during the season was our best center.

Gionta was too expensive to keep, 5 mil cap was just too much for this team when there was so much talent coming up the ranks. I think it was good for the team that we did not re-sign Gionta.

However, as people have said, we lost a major part of the "Heart" of this team. Gionta and Madden both have always worked their butt off to win, hopefully whoever Lou gets is going to be better than Zubrus :(

Madden was a great warrior and battler for many years. Besides that great shift against Dallas on the PK that others have mentioned, my other favorite moment was in game 2 of the playoffs against the Panthers in 2000 I believe, Devils killing a 5 on 3 and Madden stole the puck and got a scoring chance and Nieder scored on the rebound. It was brilliant.

Well his four-goal game in 2001 (with McKay) was a nice oddity. I almost forgot about the OT winner two years ago, I've tried to block out as much of that series as much as possible.

Another oddity I remember was him winning the faceoff against Thornton and the Devils winning in OT, that was the last game Thornton played for the Bruins.
