GentlemanOfLeisure 07-01-2009, 10:35 PM Game 4, 2000 Stanley Cup finals... Hits the post killing a penalty. Next shift, same penalty kill, beats Ed Belfour. Ties the game. Rafalski scores a minute later and we take a 3-1 lead in the series...
For being a total warrior. Thanks for everything, John. We love you and we'll miss you but it was time for a change. Good luck in Chi-town!!!!!:yo::yo::yo::yo::yo::yo::yo:

Good luck in the windy city Maddog, you were a beast in your prime.
Elite Swede 07-01-2009, 10:38 PM Good luck John in sha-city, my second favorite team. I will remember you as the great warrior with the bloody face who did alot for this team several years ago.

Team Boring 07-01-2009, 10:40 PM Thanks John, good luck to you.
The Grinder 07-01-2009, 10:41 PM You are my favorite player of all time. The only jersey I have owned since 01.
My identity as a hockey fan has a lot to do with you. Playing roller hockey with me madden jersey on I got the eventual nickname of mad dog and that stuck with me for the rest of my playing days.
Your the best.

sly217 07-01-2009, 10:44 PM He will be missed, with the contract he recieved from Chicago I'm surprised the Devils couldnt have signed him for that or even to a longer term contract...
BrodeurRULES 07-01-2009, 10:45 PM O well guess it was just time to let go ..........GL Maddog!
britdevil 07-01-2009, 10:47 PM Not having Brylin on the team felt weird, not having Maddog is going to be even weirder.

Thanks for the great moments. I still remember that penalty kill when he broke his stick, got another off the bench, stole the puck and scored a shorty. Somebody please post that video when they restore the boards!
WHose going to bark at the refs now?

Mr.Krinkle 07-01-2009, 11:10 PM Good luck Dog, you'll be missed more than you know man. Hope you can get some legs back in Chicago.
New Jersey Devils 07-01-2009, 11:15 PM now my shirt is vintage, anyways best of luck to madden.
NJDevilDave227 07-01-2009, 11:19 PM We'll see Maddog back here in a couple of years w/ Dano, Marshall and Driver at Devils alumni functions. He will always be a devil. Thanks for the memories 'Dog.
DevFan-RU- 07-01-2009, 11:19 PM Good luck maddog.
One of the greatest devils of all-time. Thanks for everything Maddog and good luck in Chi-Town.
ziggyluc 07-01-2009, 11:56 PM One of my favorite players. The only Devils jersey I own is a Madden one and I'm still going to wear it with pride.
He was such a ****ing bad ass.

I'm saddened.

Madden pre visor was such a bad ass. Madden with visor became a *****.
It will be a bit weird without him in our lineup but it was time for a change.
Mustangs 07-02-2009, 12:19 AM My favorite Madden memory is in 2000 cup final. He had 2 short handed chances in the same penalty and he had a super shot on the second one. I don't know why that stands out in my mind.
Classic Devil 07-02-2009, 12:20 AM My favorite Madden memory is in 2000 cup final. He had 2 short handed chances in the same penalty and he had a super shot on the second one. I don't know why that stands out in my mind.
It was the GWG in a Stanley Cup Finals game. :)
-2000 Shorty against Dallas
-2006 Game 2 Hatty vs Rangers
-2006 vs Sens Shorty
-2008 OT Goal vs Rags Game 3
It's gonna be hard getting used to no Madden.
Classic Devil 07-02-2009, 12:24 AM The playoffs where he was really one of the keys to victory was 2003. In 2000 he was a nice supplemental piece, but in 2003 he absolutely was one of the top reasons we won the cup.
ADD-devil950003 07-02-2009, 12:26 AM I will miss mad dog terribly, but it was time. glad that lou reaizes this in the wrong offseason for UFA's. Last years Holik, Pandolfo, Rolston in< Madden, and Gionta out....Lou get back on your ******* game man!

BenedictGomez 07-02-2009, 12:33 AM Well, on the bright side that Red Madden jersey I've been meaning to buy just got a lot cheaper.
EliasFTW 07-02-2009, 12:36 AM Good luck Mad dog. Thx for the memories.
Richer's Ghost 07-02-2009, 12:37 AM John McMullen and John Madden share the same initials and how appropriate that is - if Daneyko hadn't come before him - Madden would be Mr. Devil... a warrior and my favorite Devil which was a hard sell after being drawn to the offense that came from 44 and my namesake before him.
I hope we see him back someday behind the bench... he's got a little Daneyko, a little Stevens, a little Burns, and a little bit of every underdog ever to don the Devils logo inside him. Told by his college coach at Michigan he would never make it to the NHL... how bittersweet it must be for him to now move away from the team that gave him his dream.
I'm glad he is at least going to a team I can cheer for him to do well with - and maybe even hoist another cup someday soon. (as I look to my left and gaze at the picture from 2003 of him lifting the cup )...
http://www.hittheice.com/pics/8x10s/9447.jpg
His jersey takes permanent position next to the Richer one on the wall now. I'm left with only a Parise one to wear now (unless something unexpected happens).
Peace out JM
yakitate304 07-02-2009, 12:39 AM The reason why I switched from wing to center when I was in 7th grade, and the reason why I wore #11 in high school. Would be nice to see him win the Cup this year, they definitely have a shot at it.
Darius Dangleaitis 07-02-2009, 12:59 AM Thanks John. I only wish Lou was so willing to part with Pandolfo last summer.
BenedictGomez 07-02-2009, 01:00 AM Per TG Did you get to speak to any of the guys?
"I talked to Pando. He was well aware of what was going on."
Gee, couldnt have seen that one coming.

Hopefully Pandolfo is also aware that he will be bought out/demoted/shot next year to get his salary off the books.

I wish.
Anyways, thanks John for everything. Best of luck in Chicago.
Harrison Ford 07-02-2009, 01:32 AM Thanks for everything John. It's gonna be tough seeing Gio and Madden play for other teams...I mean at least Brylin was on a different continent playing.
Saugus 07-02-2009, 01:39 AM Thanks for everything John. It's gonna be tough seeing Gio and Madden play for other teams...I mean at least Brylin was on a different continent playing.
It's always tough, but these days there's nobody who stays on one team for their whole career, it's a dying breed.
Good memories, and hopefully good futures, for the Devils, John, and Brian. Maybe we'll see them further on down the trail.
ILikeItVeryMuch 07-02-2009, 02:55 AM <3 Maddog. He will get a standing o from me when the Hawks come to town
Waffle Board 07-02-2009, 03:40 AM Good luck Maddog. Thankfully he went to my 2nd favorite team, it makes it less painful.
Best of luck man. :)
Das Uber 07-02-2009, 03:49 AM I was ok with the idea of letting Madden go...until it actually happened. I was so bummed when I heard the news.
<3 Johnny Madds.
Just Win 07-02-2009, 05:43 AM I wanted Lou to move on and let Madden walk. But damn, the second i read he is gone, i want him back.
Thanks Mad Dog for all the great memories and for being a ****ing great warrior.:handclap:
Good luck in Chi-Town. It will be ****ing weird to see John in a different jersey.
Hirnalon 07-02-2009, 05:57 AM As someone mentioned before, I don't know why Lou signed Pandolfo to a ****** contract, and let guys like Madden and Gio go. I'm still hoping, that Jay will be dealt before the season begins.
Anyways, thanks for everything, and good luck Maddog, I hope with your help the Chicago Red Wings, I mean the Black Hawks will break the dominance of Detroit.
Austrian Devil 07-02-2009, 06:22 AM Bye John, IŽll miss you.

Chico Resch 07-02-2009, 07:57 AM I'll miss Mad-dog, I really hope he can help Chicago, like Brylin, I think his time here had come and gone.
vtfannjdevils 07-02-2009, 10:14 AM This is not going well, to much "heart" leaving this team.

Didn't you read......It is time to replace those heart and soul, Selke and multiple Cup winning guys with 2nd rate prospects that can't even excel in the AHL....Its their turn now.
This is Hockey's Future afterall:sarcasm:
MoonDragn 07-02-2009, 10:22 AM As someone mentioned before, I don't know why Lou signed Pandolfo to a ****** contract, and let guys like Madden and Gio go. I'm still hoping, that Jay will be dealt before the season begins.

Considering that Madden took a one year contract for about what Pando is getting paid, it really boggles the mind. Lou didn't even make an offer! I guess he really was pissed that we let Carolina beat us in the dying seconds of game 7. Never mind that a year ago, Madden at one point during the season was our best center.
Gionta was too expensive to keep, 5 mil cap was just too much for this team when there was so much talent coming up the ranks. I think it was good for the team that we did not re-sign Gionta.
However, as people have said, we lost a major part of the "Heart" of this team. Gionta and Madden both have always worked their butt off to win, hopefully whoever Lou gets is going to be better than Zubrus :(
Brooklyndevil 07-02-2009, 10:23 AM A great Devil that I will always remember the year we won the cup and Madden's face got cut by a skate. He was a true warrior. Best of luck in Chicago. :handclap:
MoonDragn 07-02-2009, 10:25 AM I know I will be rooting for Chicago to win a cup now, if we don't make it past the 1st round again... Actually was already rooting for them this year.

Same here.
Also, think we could not have Pando and could be giving Maddog that money.

Thats it. Well put my friend.
Drewr15 07-02-2009, 10:45 AM Madden was a great warrior and battler for many years. Besides that great shift against Dallas on the PK that others have mentioned, my other favorite moment was in game 2 of the playoffs against the Panthers in 2000 I believe, Devils killing a 5 on 3 and Madden stole the puck and got a scoring chance and Nieder scored on the rebound. It was brilliant.

glenwo2 07-02-2009, 12:04 PM Truly the end of an era. First Stevens, Dano, and Nieds....then Brylin....and Now Gionta and Madden.

LALALALALALALALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU! MARTY WILL PLAY FOREVER LALALALALALALALALA!
SCOTTIESTEVENS 07-02-2009, 12:21 PM One of my favorite Devils, Madden brought the grit and determination you love to see in hockey. More recently, his demeanor towards the loss to the Rangers in the playoffs while everyone else was just going through the motions sold me on my LOVE for Maddog.
You will be missed!

Randal Graves 07-02-2009, 10:09 PM Saw the signing while on a flight last night.. I was pretty sure it was going to happen, but seeing my favorite 2 "current" Devils leave the team was difficult. It's hard to see them go, but as Madden himself said, it was time for a change.
Good luck Madden and Gio. You'll always be Devils in my mind no matter where you play.

Exactly, I still get excited when i see former Devils do well when they go to other teams. Even Gomez which won't be as bad this year because he's not a Ranger.

Travis Zajac is exceptional with his defensive stickwork.
hargsy 07-02-2009, 10:33 PM Travis Zajac is exceptional with his defensive stickwork.
maybe Maddog taught him...........another reason we'll miss him
NJDevs26 07-02-2009, 11:09 PM Well his four-goal game in 2001 (with McKay) was a nice oddity. I almost forgot about the OT winner two years ago, I've tried to block out as much of that series as much as possible.
Another oddity I remember was him winning the faceoff against Thornton and the Devils winning in OT, that was the last game Thornton played for the Bruins.
