Pandolfo – Zubrus – Shannahan?
Clarkson – Pelley – PL3

Martin – Oduya

Salvador – Greene

Guys, Lou will do what's best. I still would like Chard La Rose and we still can make trades, say for a guy like Marleu. If that's Gaborik's true cap number, it's a much better deal than Gomez or Drury. When healthy, he's a gamebreaker.

It's a true boom or bust signing, but that's better than Gomez or Drury which were guaranteed busts off the bat.

If Gaborik's problem with Minnesota was the fact that they played a defensive system where he got little offensive support, he's in for a rude awakening in New York.

Edit: Just saw the updated numbers on Gaborik. Sather never changes. I mean, it's probably market value for a healthy Gaborik, but we all know that's unlikely to happen.

Patience my friends, I've been comparing this feeding frenzy to Black Friday (Sports Guy had similar thoughts regarding NBA free agency). Most of the time you show up and most of the stuff you wanted is gone and you still feel compelled to buy something for the sake of buying something. Then you end up at home and wonder why you have a copy of Pearl Harbor on Bluray.

Exactly. No one wants to be left out. So far, with many of the guys we could sign and not **** ourselves still availible, we've made the right choice standing pat. We'll have to do something at some point, but no need to rush into anything and get ****ed.

if he plays off the half-boards, you just wasted alot of money. I do like the guy, though.
he has PK potential, is a pretty good checker, he is a master of deflections, but the issues is... will he be able to play in front of the net. with who he is likely to play with, I dunno. especially since the criteria of what is a penalty has gone down and defenders have adjusted.

He's very good defensively, but not elite. He was probably the best forechecker on the Devils last year. Never takes a game off, always works hard, and plays bigger than his size. But he's also a 60 point winger who lacks size.

He's the type of player any team could use for 3-4 million. Not at all worth the contract Montreal gave him.

I do not want Lou to overpay for anyone. Sign Lang for one year and a cheap puckmover. Sign LaRose to a 1.5-2 mill. Promote Bergfors into Gionta's role, he has paid his dues and deserves to play on the big club now. Promote Corrente as well as. We might not have the same sucess as previous year but at least we wont be up against the cap and have a great chance to resign Martin to a contract he deserves and then sign Parise the year after.

The key to championships is to build from within. That's what we're doing.

It takes much more than that.

There was also a little divine intervention and close to last place finishes involved too.

We are not going to get a solid, consistent gem of a Ken Daneyko defenseman, unless we get another higher type of draft pick at #18, which is where we selected him.

We are not going to have Toronto trade for one of our solid, young defenseman (which we don't really have now anyway) in exchange for their first round draft pick, and then in turn have Toronto all of sudden tank during their season, which then leads us to use that 1st round pick and selecting a generational Scott Niedermayer with the #3 overall pick in the draft.

We are not going to have another ONCE IN A LIFETIME scenario of having a judge (of all people) land us a a stud defenseman that turns out to be our greatest captain and an incredible leader. And by the way, the genesis to us landing this player was earning the #2 overall pick in Brendan Shanahan.

We are also not going to have a generational HOF goalie fall into our lap due to the stupidity of other GM's

Whoever doesn't didn't want Jay Bouwmeester is out of their minds. This is the type of quality player you win a Championship with. The only way you can get a player of this magnitude (or other impact players) is through free agency.

Yes, I know there is a salary cap and we have no assets or hot prospects to dangle in a trade, but the only other way to get impact players is to trade Zach Parise, the only player that would land us an "impact" player, or go the free agency route.

Or then again, we can hold our breaths for Daneyko, Stevens, Niedermayer & Brodeur to once again fall into our laps.

Not.

I haven't lost faith in Lou (yet) but it is significant to note that in addition to his smart drafting & trading, we've also had a little divine intervention that really, really, really helped push us over the top.

Smart drafting, free agent signings and key trades.

We need to stress free agent signings and hopefully Rolston was a start. Free agent signings is the only real way to overcome the miracle of us amassing the miracle of landing star-quality players that helped push our homegrown over the top.

A little prayer helps too.
I don't see a single free agent who is both cap-friendly and a worthwhile addition with the exception of LaRose (depending on price).

...pause....

Put havlat with Elias and Zubrus.

Elias-Zubrus-Havlat

The wings are so freaking creative, you can put a mediocre player like Zubrus at center... and they will score! We're stuck with Zubrus anyway, might as well cater to that fact. Havlat is a great player, and I can only imagine how good the two would be together.

The idea of Havlat in NJ is starting to grow on me.

How great would it be to see havlat in a devils jersey next season?

amazing. absolutely amazing.

I don't think anyone has revoked our franchise.

you know what i meant, lol.

so what's gonna happen now. we've lost 5 forwards.

Rupp, Gionta, Madden, Shanahan (UFA), Holik (ret)

Shanahan is a possible returnee but who will replace?

Gayness, it'll be weird seeing Madden in a Hawks sweater and Gio in Habs. Don't like change.

How much cap space is that now? (excluding Zajac)

OK, I could deal with all the others gone, but Maddog. I feel sick.

I know it had to be done though.

Sick.

Is that overpayment for Madden?

It wouldn't be a terrible idea to stand pat for several days until after the initial frenzy has died down. The longer players wait in the free agent pool, the lower their bargaining power. That's typically the case anyway.

Agreed. I was hoping that would be the case with Gionta, but it was not to be.

The only non-center FA who I'd like to add, given the right circumstances, is Havlat. And that's only for a one, maximum two year contract. Same goes for Koivu, although Koivu fills more of a direct need. Lang is still my top choice period because he's cheap and one year for sure.

It's about what he's worth on the market. He'll be good in Chicago.

Madden fills the role Pahlsson had with Chicago in the playoffs. I think it's a good fit for them - he's a veteran voice on a young up and coming team.

That's very true, but it's also subjective.

Many people feel (and still feel) that Lou overpaid for Brian Rolston.

He has yet to pay dividends but I'm giving him this season to prove himself.

He did overpay for Rolston. But when he did, we had more flexibility than we currently do.
