Mike Keenan as a candidate for HC job?

Caught this in the NY Post in it's paper and was able to find it online:

Finally, we asked Lamoriello who would be coaching the Devils this season.

"I might have a surprise," said the man who is never surprised.

Introducing Mike Keenan.

Lous surprise is another Sutter

I really think it typical lou style we can guess till the cows come home but we aren't going to be right. He does not let anything out. We only know 2 people he might have talked to and you kno there is more then just those two. Lou will do whats right for this team and what it needs and with Marty saying he wanted to continue on what Sutter started i believe Lou will find someone to do that. Marty has a lot of say on this team i think.

Soooo hopefully in the next 24 to 48 hours we will find out because i dont like the idea of trying to get UFA's to play for us without a coach.

I'm not going to be happy if Lou picks up an old washed up geezer like Keenan or Lemaire. This team is only getting younger. I'd like to see a young coach who is committed long term and can help guys like Tedenboo, Josefson, Burlon, Cormier, etc succeed in the new NHL.

That's one of the reasons why I like Haviland. We've seen what Chicago has done with a young team. If the cap falls in 2010-2011, we're going to need our younger players to step up into bigger roles.

Keenan is just as prehistoric as Lemaire. I'll be fair to him, he's like a sabretooth instead of the full on dinosaur that Lemaire is, but outdated nonetheless. His disciplinarian approach is not what this team needs.

Well if Lamoriello says he has a surprise then it probably won't be Lemaire.

Right now I would have to say Lemaire is the front runner. In fact I sometimes wonder if what is holding up the deal is Lou not wanting to switch to the system Lemaire perfers to play - trap and more trap - and wanting to see the team go forward with the style Sutter wanted.

In other words Lou is trying to see if this old dog can learn not only new tricks but stay away from the old ones that have seemed to pass everyone by.

But if Lemaire insits on coaching todays Devils like how he coached them 15 years ago and how he has coached the Wild for the last nine, Lou will look elsewhere.

Still the real and only success this team has ever had since winning the cup in 2000 is when we won it in 2003 under a coach with very much a disciplinarian approach, the very same approach you seem to suggest this team does not need.

Hey, if Lemaire can change styles to what fits this team the best I think Lou would be nuts to bypass him for a second tour.

Because the bottom line on him is no matter the style Lemaire chooses to bring he is still one of the most respected hockey minds in the sport today and very few can bring awe and respect into his teams locker room than Jacque Lemaire can.

Disciplinarian coaches aren't for every team, though. It may have worked for the '03 team, but aside from a couple players, a GM, and the uniform, this isn't the same team. If he comes and we win the Cup, great, but I don't think this team would respond well to a disciplinarian approach.

I'm not speculating, and I know it's a non-issue, but I wonder if there would be a change in the captaincy with the new coach.

It mostly depends on who is on our final roster, if roster spots are mostly filled by veterans than young players than yeah I agree THIS team would not respond well to a disciplinarian approach.

But if Lou does goe with a younger lineup sprinkled with veterans such as Jamie, Elias, White and even Shanahan, I can easily see this team benefit from a tough coach because youth can and has brought into tough disciplinarians in the past.

I'm not speculating, and I know it's a non-issue, but I wonder if there would be a change in the captaincy with the new coach.

Only if they plan on moving Jamie, otherwise I see no reason to go down that road once again. We all know how ugly it is.

I think Lou will surprise all of us by not going with Lemaire & instead pulling something out of left field.

I'm waiting to hear an announcement scenario like one of these:

1) Johnny Mac sent to either Lowell or Trenton to be a Head-Coach In Training. Guy Carbonneau would come in as Head Coach with Kirk Muller as his assistant.

2) Ted Nolan to be announced as Head Coach. Johnny Mac stays put.

3) Lou goes "local" & hires Middletown, NJ native, Mike Haviland.

If there was going to be a Vbookie pool on the Devils Head Coach choice, I'd let it all ride on #3.

If Keenan is our coach, Marty sure won't get burnt out from playing too much - Keenan has the fastest trigger finger in the NHL at pulling goaltenders whether they let in soft goals or not.

Your forwards not back-checking? Pull the goalie.
Defense not making good clearing passes? Pull the goalie.
The Refs calling too many penalties on your team? Pull the goalie.
The Zamboni miss a strip of ice between periods? Pull the goalie.
Your computer freeze up running Windows Vista? Pull the goalie.

It is his one all-purpose move and one that will destroy the locker room and drive Marty into early retirement.

Discipline? Yes please, but not at the cost of sacrificing the team identity.

I'm confident Lou has enough common sense to realize that Keenan is out of touch with today's game and should NOT be coaching in this league right now. The old school, Iron Mike Keenan no longer exists. He softened up, gave the players way too much freedom, and didn't crack the whip or hold his players accountable enough. Add into the fact that rumors circulated late last season that the Flames weren't even practicing the powerplay, and this is a guy who I would not want anywhere near New Jersey. I don't really want Lemaire to return, but I'd take him in a hearbeat over Keenan.
