pronger question

Sup Anaheim fans. Screw you guys for the haul you got today. Anyway, I have a question about Pronger.

All the numbers in the world say his game has slipped since 2007. Not to "bad" levels; more to "not the unholy terror he used to be". I tend to trust numbers unless there's a VERY good reason not to. So. Is there a good reason to not trust the numbers on Pronger?

Also, why wasn't Pronger being played against top opp this year?

He's lost very little, if anything. He's still solid as a rock at defending and then moving the puck out of trouble, and he still can fire up the PP. And he'll bring it in the playoffs.

The only people on the main boards saying he's in serious decline are people who seem to always want to chime in with something contrarian to show how much smarter they are than everyone else. Kinda like the dweeb who pisses on any music band as soon as they get a little popular.

Sure, he's not the same as he was when he was an MVP, but he's still one of the best.

So Joe Thornton isn't top opposition?

I mean I realize it was the playoffs and all but...:sarcasm:

Pronger and Niedermayer split top opposition duties, Carlyle would play matchups with the first two D pairings, not just top pairing, 2nd pairing.

Pronger can still elevate his game when his team needs him the most despite the fact that the new rules restrict him from being as physically dominant as he ought to be. Anyways, I'm actually more interested on what we'll be expecting from Luca Sbisa.

Pronger was never put against the top opponents. Even in 07, Niedermayer and Beauchemin were the ones tasked with shutting down the other team's top units. Although not as strictly as Carlyle matched the Pahlsson line up.

Pronger has lost a bit. He is a little less nasty. He gets beat wide a little more. But he still clears the crease. He's still the powerplay quarterback (and can and does man the point by himself while Scotty roves around). Still has a big shot. Also, he had a poorer year in 07-08, and rebounded some this season.

He was the best d-man in the playoffs this year.. out of all the teams

Pronger is a huge physical presence in front of the net, and still a bomber from the point....I said, before this trade I believe Pronger has slowed down, and it showed in the playoffs....but that said, he's going to do great for you guys, but IMO very much not worth what you gave up.

Good Luck Philly, seriously.

He's not as good as he was during Edmontons run and in 06-07 but he's still the third best defenseman in the league. He's not as mean as he used to be but his positioning and stick work are still incredible and he is an amazing PP QB. I shudder to think how bad our first PP unit could be with Whitney instead of Pronger.

Offsensively, he may be better than ever.

Defensively, he gets exposed by speed, which is why he gets so many hooking penalties.

No it didn't, Pronger was probably the best defenseman in the playoffs this year. He outplayed Lidstrom and Niedermayer in the Detroit series and without Pronger Hiller would have looked alot worse.

Oh, Ok, my bad...I didn't realize you know all...that's cool, Paul, my opinion is this...he plays a great game (like I've said over and over) but this year and in the playoffs is the first time in his stay here in Anaheim (and I've watched live or on TV about 95% of the Ducks games since he's been here) that I've seen him chase too many players from the corners to the front of the net...notice I didn't say he didn't have great aspect to his game...he's still an absolute STUD in front of the net, and a true BOMBER from the point....IMO, his footwork has slowed down...we'll see what happens as he gets a year older.

I'd say the only thing he's lost is a bit of his nastiness. But even Pronger at half nasty is still pretty ****ing scary.

I personally think Pronger lost a bit of his nastiness from the fact that every little move he makes is going to be under a huge microscope. I look back to the Kesler incident against Vancouver as a perfect example. When they weren't going to really punish him, TSN (or one of the Canadian channels) submitted a video of him stepping on Kesler a day or so later, which increased the suspension to like 8 games or so. I think he realized that and toned it down a notch as to not hurt the team's chances of winning. (or maybe because Carlyle and/or management said something to him about possibly toning it down too.) I like Pronger because of his nastiness, but when he's not being particularly nasty, he's still very effective.

He's going to be a major part of your team and will be big in the playoffs. However, get ready for a lot of crybabies in the league hellbent on wanting to punish him for anything he does.

I don't know about that. I could make a list of guys that would beg to differ.

Ericsson
Seidenberg
Scuderi
Lidstrom

He was good, but he wasn't the BEST in the playoffs IMO

Seidenberg, Scuderi? Seriously? I didn't see many Anaheim games but that sounds like a stretch.

Other than Lidstrom they're all stretches.

I'll give you Scuderi and Ericsson to an extent but otherwise... No. Lidstrom showed the League that he was, indeed, human.

He's screwed then. The Flyer's more then any team are under the league microscope. We're used to it. In fact, I don't think we had one player suspended last year.

Or he was in the minors at the time?

We should trade Christensen/Miller for him to replace some of the hate we lost.

The guy is a cancer just like Avery, maybe even worse. I don't think Avery ever skated up to his teammate in practice, tapped him on the shoulder, and cross checked him in the mouth breaking three of his teeth. Why? for not participating in a ridiculous hazing ritual. We don't need Downie, his issues, or his suspensions. He's gotta be the only player to have 20 game suspensions in both the NHL and the AHL.

I completely agree. The guy is a nutcase.
