suitup17 06-24-2009, 11:32 PM What do you think will happen on draft day? What will we do? We don't seem to have too many picks right now, which doesn't bode to well for us. I've never really had the time to watch draft days, is there a lot of trade activity like there is in football?
Nighthock 06-24-2009, 11:41 PM Don't know ... I'm trying not to get my hopes up, though.
As for me, I'll be at work until 7pm so I'll miss the damn thing ... I'll try to sneak a peak here and there when my manager isn't looking.

There will probably be a ton of trades at this years draft..
Don't know what DW will do...I'm pretty much supportive of anything that happens...McLellan,Doug Wilson and staff know hockey and appear to be very capable, intelligent individuals who know even better the direction they want to go in order to be fully successful in the now, and in the future..
VP and GM 06-24-2009, 11:46 PM Here's what i'd like to see given that NTCs are waived.
Patty to the Kings for the 5th overall pick and we draft a high end forward prospect
Nabby and out 2nd round pick to the Lightning for St. Louis.
In reality probally not much for the Sharks
suitup17 06-24-2009, 11:48 PM Yeah I hear ya. I really want something big to happen this year that will shake things up.

If we could make that happen, I'd be happy with it. I'm sure DW is listening to deals for Marleau and Nabby. If Nabby goes, I wonder who we would go for? That assuming we don't get Gustavsson.
RoundsHansen32 06-25-2009, 12:02 AM What about Carter Ashton? Right winger, anyone have a comprehensive read on this kid and if he's worth bein on the Sharks radar...From Saskatoon for what it's worth.

Marleau in L.A. means Marleau has the oppurtunity of sticking it to us a whole lot during the course of the season...I guess that's what DW was talking about when he said tough, difficult, uncomfortable decisions...You gotta lose a bit to gain a bit??

Could just mean trading players that make up the core of our team. Deals that he doesn't want to do, but has to do.
Rickety Cricket 06-25-2009, 12:20 AM Guys, why would LA trade the 5th overall for Marleau?
TheGooooch 06-25-2009, 12:23 AM Guys, why would LA trade the 5th overall for Marleau?
They wouldn't IMO. Not in their game plan. They have obviously shown they are going young and this year doesn't seem like the one that they feel they need a veteran in there to help them over the top
suitup17 06-25-2009, 12:27 AM Probably not, but if we can find a good deal for Marleau, I think we should take it. Would we have a chance at all for Heatley? Maybe we could make a deal for Kovalchuk. Is he not a UFA after this year? Just some ideas we could think about. Maybe we could sign JBo.

What the hell? :biglaugh:
superroyain10 06-25-2009, 01:14 AM I imagine it would be hard to trade a player with a NTC on draft day, no? I mean, if he calls Marleau and asks him to waive his NTC, Marleau has almost no time to make a decision since draft-day trades happen very quickly. Even if Marleau stands is by the phone the whole day on draft day, I could see him automatically saying "no" due to the lack of time. Marleau could have given DW a list of teams he is willing to go to, but even then to have to coordinate him actually waiving the clause before the trade announcement.

These guys have been informed prior to the draft in private meetings with DW...I assume No one's in the dark..

Yeah, I will. I'm a sucker for drafts. Well, except the MLB one, that one's lame.

I imagine that DW would probably approach the NTC guys a good while prior (like probably a week or two ago) and say "look, if you're willing to waive your NTC, I might try dangling you at the draft. Is this OK?" and that could either lead to a straight out "yes" from the player, or a list of acceptable teams.
WineShark 06-25-2009, 02:05 AM The main goals from what I can tell is to sign the right players this year in what is a rapidly closing window for this team. Cap space is at a premium if we are going to sign our own UFAs and RFA's even. To improve the team, DW will need to improve desire-grit-hunger or whatever you want to call it. My own hope is we move Marleau for a top level LW who has the ability to elevate his game like Brendan Morreau did in the P/O's year before last. And we further use some savings to find better scoring chemistry on the third and fourth lines.
Nothing has to happen this year at the draft and DW can stay pat. But if there is a deal to be made that will move Cheech or another player for good picks and cap space, he will take it so we can grab an ingrediant player UFA. If nothing gets done this week, its not the end of the world. Trades are still an option after the draft.

Very true. I guess we'll find out soon enough if he has anything up his sleeves! It would be pretty good if we could clear some room by trading Cheechoo for a pick. I think that has to be done.

That would be a good thing if we got the right players in return. One interesting comment from Joe when asked about his leadership and he said it was Patty's team. (He later said that particular piece was flip.) But the next question didnt get a lot of play. They asked when it WOULD be his team, and his answer was something like - soon or soon enough. Combined with the other DW comments this offseason, its certainly a possibility that Nabby or Marleau will be moved despite the emotional pleas on the board to the contrary citing DW's player friendly culture. I hope that's the case we move Patty in particular, but I am open to the notion that there will not be a trade we can make either for a goalie or a forward that is fair, that Marleau wont waive provisions in his contract, and we see both players in teal at training camp.

hockeyball 06-25-2009, 12:49 PM Can trade for a young gun like Harding, but unless there is something regarding Nabby we are not aware of, I don't see DW taking that kind of risk.
However, if he thinks Nabbies career is over, it's entirely possible, and makes sense at that point while he still has value.
I wonder what Nabby could garner in draft picks? Trade Nabby for picks + procpects and trade Clowe/michalek/etc for a young hot goalie.

Wait wait, if he thinks Nabby's career is over? Do you mean his career here is over, or his career is over? What are you talking about?
suitup17 06-25-2009, 01:51 PM I really liked what I saw out of Schneider here in Winnipeg. I think he would be someone we could go for. Also, Harding as stated and I think Pavelec might be available. There is also Neuvirth in the Washington system that beat out our Moose. He was a really good player too.

I think his career here is over, so it makes sense to trade him now while his value is high. I'm sure there is a bunch of guys we could take a chance on, maybe even Price, but I think he is a bit overrated. It could just be the Montreal media though.
Pinkfloyd 06-25-2009, 02:06 PM It depends on what your plan for next year is. If your plan is to win a Stanley Cup then you stick with Nabokov. Nobody on the trading block or the free agent market is an improvement over him. He will give the Sharks the best chance because you need to put out the best roster you can.
If your goal is to get something for them and then wait and see if the team responds to a bunch of new faces, then you deal them for established players.
If your goal is to rebuild, trade them for picks.
If Gustavsson decides to play in San Jose, you have to keep Nabokov. Seeing as how that likely won't be decided until the 29th, I can't see Nabokov being dealt before the draft. One of the selling points here for Gustavsson is Nabokov as a mentor and with only a year left.
