Tbg1515 03-22-2004, 08:42 AM I am sick of hearing all this crap, about how the Devils can't beat winnning teams anymore, but they can beat up on all the worse NHL teams......And how they are gonna have a hard time defending the Cup in the playoffs, dont they realize we are missing a norris trophy defenseman in Stevens, and we still no what it takes to win in the playoffs.........If you look at the 3 cups we won, each time we won we went the last like 10 games of the Reg Season, in a slump......I mean playoffs are a whole new season everyone is 0-0 and all you need is 16W, you look at the Eastern conference and who are the clear cut favorites...And the media can say all this **** about losing to playoffs teams, but we are only losing 2-1, or 3-2....It's not like we are getting killed....Some of these games we are actually outplaying the opposition, we may lose on a bad bounce, or something like that......I cant stand , all these bandwagon New York city reports, who jump on the Devils when they make it to the finals.....But as soon as things go wrong they point out every little bad thing.......

Nobody is saying that the Devils can't win again, what they are saying is that:
No Stevens = No Cup
and it would difficult to argue that point at the moment.

NO STEVENS = 1ST ROUND EXIT!!!
Jason MacIsaac 03-22-2004, 11:20 AM Its a 7 game series, things happen and I still think we can edge into the 2nd round without Stevens. By then he will be healthy.

No guarentees about that. I'm sure if we went by Lou quotes, Stevens should have been back by now. I can blame my 'glass is half empty view' on Jason Allison and Adam Deadmarsh.
DownFromNJ 03-22-2004, 04:53 PM What I love is that the Devils are out forechecking everyone lately. They were outdoing the Flyers, Habs, and all the sub 500 teams. Problem is, without our #1 and #3 defensemen, we can't handle our own end of the ice.
With the way our forwards are playing at the moment, I'd be confident with our playoff hopes had Rafalski not been injured. However, playing with 3 of Brown, Hale, Albelin, or Giroux hurts. Playing with two of them isn't horrible, but three..
On the bright side, Hale is getting some good experience that will definately show in the years to come. We'll have some salary room to hire a great defenseman if Stevens doesn't come back, and if he does we'll have the best defense in the league again.
Stevens-Rafalski
White-Niedermayer
Martin-Hale/Some UFA we pick up
I think the Devils have the brightest future in the NHL right now. We're going to have Parise, Pihlman, and Suglobov playing in the next season or two. Thats huge. Ahonen is going to solve our backup worries soon. DeMarchi, Hale, and Martin are going to be our future defensemen.
Is this a Stanley Cup year? Without Rafalski and Stevens, probably not. Is next year a Stanley Cup year? Oh hell yeah.
Hellsempire 03-22-2004, 05:34 PM I am also sick of the media on how they get down on the Devils. They are the SC Champions for damn sakes! Just like the media and everyone else didn't think the Devils could or would win the SC last season... Guess what? The Devils proved everybody wrong. This year is a different story if Stevens and Rafalski is not in the line up...But the good news is that Stevens and Rafalski are doing better and they will both be back for the playoffs... So then the Devils can prove everyone wrong again. I am liking this underdog role that the Devils have been having for a while...
Ronnie Bass 03-22-2004, 05:51 PM ....uhhh but its true.....

The problem the devils have been having against the good teams is not that they are giving up a ton of goals. They aren't scoring
The biggest culprits are Gomez and Elias. They've been dominant of late against the non-playoff teams, and the Devils have destroyed the non-playoff teams they've played.
Elias and Gomez have done nothing against the palyoff teams, therefore the Devils don't score enough goals to win against better competition.
DownFromNJ 03-22-2004, 06:29 PM The EG in the EGG have done plenty against Playoff teams. Just not without the third G.
Beach Boy 03-23-2004, 02:54 AM Don't the Devils have like a real bad history the year after they win the Cup. It seems like the Devils either go all the way or get bounced in the first round or even miss they playoffs('96 I think). I know they missed the Playoffs in 96, the got bounced by Ottawa one year, Pittsburgh, Carolina, all of these in the 1st round if I'm not mistaking. So I wouldn't be surprised if they lost in the 1st round this year again.

No they haven't.
MattNJD 03-23-2004, 09:14 AM No they haven't.
Games Goals Assists Points
Gomez: 72 12 24 36
Elias: 97 25 48 73
Two cups each... I would say thats getting the job done pretty well. I still like thinking about that game 7 of the 2000 ECF's. ELIAS BABY!
The Mad Crapper 03-23-2004, 09:59 AM Sounds like its time to call up Rob "The Scoring Machine" Skrlac!

But then they almost repeated in 2001. This year, if we're using previous history (which is really not at all a worthwhile measure considering the turnover in both players and coaches) as a guide, then the Devils should go far because they're definitely going to make the playoffs this season.

I think Skrlac is going to see time with fellow BC'er Voros on his opposite wing from now on.
Rob will just blossom as a pure scorer under Ftorek.

3 Goals vs Calgary
5 Goals vs Buffalo
Bunch of goals vs non-playoff teams. Only other playoff teams the EGG line played against were Toronto (3-0 loss, Belfour got hot), and now Montreal (3-2 loss, Gio's first game back, again goalie got hot). The EGG line has only been together since Mid-February, and Gio missed 2 weeks due to his injury. Every single game they've been together, they've been steller.

He does have the best goals scored to time played ratio in the history of the Devils. :p
