haakon84 03-20-2004, 03:18 PM Yes. The Flyers have 4 more ot losses than the Devils giving them 4 more points meanwhile the Devils have 1 more win. Ain't that something. The Devils have been playing much better as of late and my confidence in this team is going up. Getting Stevens back is going to be a great help. There are now 4 lines that can light the lamp, and our D has been playing better every game. Marty is playing solid like usual. With or without Stevens this is a dangerous team. The Devils have a lot to prove and thats when they play there best. :handclap:

Proves my point that the league has to get rid of these gift points when you lose in OT.....Why should you be rewarded in OT if you lose......I think if you tie obviously you should get that point but if you lose you should not get a point......

Many think that, but I think OT is generally fairly entertaining and I don't think that's just because it is 4 on 4. Also, it's interesting because last year the Devils had 2 more OT losses and won the division by one point, giving them a considerably easier path to the cup.

No path to the cup is easy, but I know what you mean.
FireStevensDotCom 03-21-2004, 01:37 AM the OTL point is not worth talking about is it? if the league didnt have it teams would approach OT differant. teams know they get a point in OT no matter what now. will it have mattered if the league didnt have ther rule? who knows. but i think everyone can agree teams would appoach OT allot differant if they knew they got nothing in OT. now teams play it safe allot late in regulation in a tie game.

I agree with you on that. Butterfly Effect aside (I don't want to plunge the discussion into chaos,) a team certainly plays differently with the OTL-system. Even against divisional or conference rivals, an OTL isn't as harsh a sting as losing under the old system. While a team is more cautious in an intra-conference game, the losing team still has a point and only gives up one additional point their oppenent.

The Devils won two Stanley Cups (1995 and 2000) while not having a top three seeding, so, while I can't say definitively they would have won, I don't think they would have lost. They could have beaten Toronto in the first round. They could certainly have beaten the Senators, a team the Devils beat in the ECF, in round two. I also think the Devils could have beaten Tampa Bay to go the Stanley Cup Finals. The Devils would still have had home-ice advantage against Anaheim in the Finals.

The devils won by 2 points (they had the win tie-breaker) and also basically threw the last game to rest Marty, Stevens, Niedermayer, Elias etc.

I don't know if they would have lost or still won the Cup, but a series against Toronto would've taken much more out of you guys than a series versus Boston. If the Devils would have faced Toronto and came out with injuries/fatigue comparable to what the Flyers had after the first round, I'm not sure whether New Jersey would've been able to beat Ottawa.
I guess we'll never know. :)
tieio 03-22-2004, 04:54 PM sure we will know, we won, which means we were the best. Does anything more need to be said? I love Flyers fans, always claiming supremicy when they have nothing to show for it. It is as simple as this: the team that wins the cup is the best team. "could have been" and "maybes" is all you people have when you don't win isn't it? ;)

He's not claiming supremicy, we lost in the second round, you guys won the cup.
All he's saying is that if we had won the division and you guys had to play Toronto in the first round, and Ottawa in the second, that you guys would have been more banged up going into the CF's than you were.
It's a valid point, but otherwise moot since we didn't win the division.

Valid perhaps. Meaningful, not really. Because, as you said, it's a moot point - you can't go back and see. We won the cup. Who knows what would've happened?
The reason I don't think the seedings are as important this year is because all the teams are legitimate contenders (well, in the east, anyway) and no matter who you play, you're going to come out somewhat bruised. It'll be hard for a team from the east to win this year, because the western teams have it relatively easy.
