NO SUCH PLACE EXISTS!

I believe you mean Richard Codey arena:sarcasm:. Seriously though, they've had open hockey on the weekends before, but they never got enough people to keep it going. I'm definitely up for it though, and should be able to make it this Saturday.

And if anyone else is thinking of going, definitely call them first. I've shown up enough times to find the building empty or something else going on. :shakehead

It's one of those were just 2 or 3 skaters show up and no goalies?

Nothing more frustrating when you have your heart set on playing and then that happens. I feel like crying. I actually might really have done so at one time or another.

Probably still has the worst ice in the area

I like SoMo's atmosphere. It has a ton of seats. If we could fill those with blow-up dolls I would play there.

Is it? I haven't been there since before the millennium. Was never too fond of that place.

I got in a 45 minute discussion with Bill Guerin about books when I saw him walking across the parking lot sometime in the fall of 1995. I had bumped into him at Border's Books in Wayne a few months earlier, just weeks after the 1995 Cup and he remembered our dainty little literary conversation.

Ah, the 90's....what a Golden Age to be in your 20's...the days before depending on ibuprofen and Sportscream or Tiger Balm.

Can't tell it by their website. I just looked and saw no times listed for Open Hockey.
They really need to improve that site.
I like SMA - I have a weekly game with a bunch of guys there and I used to go and play Saturdays, too. Those were great time slots, too - like eight or nine, IIRC. When you only had five or six guy and no goalies, it wasn't easy to have fun, but it wasn't impossible to make it a good skate.
I've been going to Union Sports Arena a lot lately on Saturday nights - game usually starts at 10:15. Only thing there is it seems a lot of guys don't want to bring white jerseys and the teams are like eggplant, black, blue and yellow versus white, grey, green and red. Sometimes, you'll also get four or five goalies show up. Unfortunately, the IHOP there on 22 isn't a 24 hour IHOP (like the one near Floyd Hall) so if you get hungry, you need to get something to go or stop by the Taco Bell.

There's a Hooters nearby that's open.

I like USA and there's always usually a good crowd whenever I go. The ice sounds weird when you skate on it, but it's not as bad as it sounds.

If I happen to be off of work on a Wednesday or Friday, I go to their Tuesday or Thursday night late night open that stars at like 10:45 pm.

Those days of playing late and waking up after 3-4 hours sleep are long gone.

lol, that ice at USA is the strangest stuff. I remember a few years ago it seemed really soft, especially in the corners. It's not as bad now. I think the ice at SMA is better. Morristown has the best ice; but I've never heard of them having open hockey.

Yea for some reason they are to lazy to put the damn times on the freaking website. I actually asked the guy at the front desk about putting the times up on the website. He responded with "We hope people keep telling their friends." I was thinking to myself, how about putting up the open hockey and also "call for more info". That rink is so damn lazy, but I guess they can be since it's a county run rink. LIke I said, just call an ask first before going, and also tell them to put in on their website. Maybe if more people complain they will actually start doing.

I just called (973-731-3828; then hit 0) and the guy said they were having open hockey from 8:00 - 9:30.

Just got back from Union. 16 skaters/2 goalies.

For some reason, you have to write down your age on the sign-in sheet and there was a bunch of 15, 16, 17 year-olds tonight. I don't mind it at all because I love the competitiveness of playing against those high school punks. ;)

The only reason why I bring it up is because most rinks don't allow you on if you are under 18. Sometimes they sneak on at Floyd, but they have their own high school open hockey.

damn thats better then the weeks I've been going. I went for a month and it was only 4 or 3 skaters. Last night was the only time I didnt skate. I was playing hockey with the guys before the open hockey. I wish SMA would advertise it better. I'll give the SMA 2 more open hockey to change or I might be hitting up UNion more.

Last night at Union was a light turn-out. - -two goalies, six skaters.
I thought that maybe some guys had gone to SMA, but I forgot that they weren't having it this week. Did anyone go to Floyd or somewhere else last night? How was it?
Hopefully, more guys show up next week.

I went to Union this past Tuesday (was off Wed.) and there were 22 skaters and 3 goalies. That punk in the tinted visor who thinks he's Ovechkin was there too.

Really? Everywhere in NJ/NY where I've played both open & men's league, the only requirement is wearing just a helmet. Cage or any type of visor is optional.

yea up until this summer we had to wear full cages, now we can wear halfies. i dont know if im going ot yet. i have a real nice itech straight cut(my helmet looks almost exactly like crosbys, rbk 8k with itech straight cut) but i dont like wearing mouth guards but if i wear a halfie i feel like i really should wear a mouth guard

how long is a decent drive for you? i have to drive 45 minutes to get to my rink and my games are no earlier than 930 and sometimes as late as 1030. not an easy drive when you finish the game with celebratory brewskies

I can't tolerate a mouth guard. I tried wearing one and spit it out after about 5 minutes.

It's around 30-40 mins. It's not worth it considering I live 20 mins away from both Ice Vault and Ice House.

the rink that i usually go to is being renovated. that one is still like a half hour away. it sucks cause i still end up having to drive to the farther one because they schedule some games there also.

the wbs penguins are getting a new practice arena which is close to me so im looking forward to that. it should be real nice. i used to play there when i was like 6, 7 and 8 years old, but it closed about 10 years ago, they gutted it, and are rebuilding it.

i dont live in joysi. not too many rinks around me. when i first move here from nj there was only that one i was talking about. then we got another one, the old one closed so again, we only had one within a 90 mile radius. then that one rink got another sheet of ice so we had two, then about 5 years ago we got another one like 45 minutes away so now we have 3 sheets of ice but they are 30-45 minutes away.

ive been to south mountain ,its a real nice rink. the one sheet of ice is kind of weird, but the one the devils practiced on was nice
