Because I didn't scream when trav trav roofed that puck. About time we beat them there, and in OT. Hopefully we can draw from this scoring wise Tuesday...and maybe get a powerplay goal...

Glad to get the first game in Carolina. Now the next one becomes huge. If the Devs can get that they get get a strangle hold on the series and possibly make it a short one, which is key for a long playoff run.

I still wish they would bump him back to PP2, the PP revolves around him too much. With Patty and Zach out there, that's kinda criminal.

Or fire Johnny Mac or something. he did have a much better game at even strength.

I dont know what we would do without parise, he is seriously the most dangerous devil by far when he's on the ice. and its actually funny how all these announcers interview players and ask them how they shut down parise and even though they always say something like you have to watch him Parise is the one scoring goals and winning games

I am also very happy with the win. I intended to sleep through the night (like in Sweden, we are 6 hours ahead of you) but at 3 am I woke up, score 2 2. I watched the rest of the game, and wanted to go to bed for the OT, because I have classes at 8 AM tomorrow morning, and I am the only student, so what I did was, I wrote the teacher and told him I had the flu. It is now almost 5 AM and I do not want to go to bed, coz I can´t sleep anyway.

Great game. I always say Game 1 and 3 are the most important in a series....if you win them, you should be fine. Guess, our odds are quite ok now.

What a steal that game was, I felt they played on their heels much of the 2nd and 3rd....but interesting note.....

Pre-game they said "Travis Zajac has not scored a goal since March 17th"

That was the last time I drank at the bar I was at tonight, "The Rock" right around the corner from me in Bayonne, I turned to my girlfriend and said, "That means he's gonna score, it's the 'Stupid TV stat jinx'"

I agree. 7 D. There's no forward to insert for Holik (I am not playing an AHL player who has not played an NHL game this season and PL3 just shouldn't be in playoff games period) and when they watch the tape of this game they are going to be very disappointed in Holik's play. A couple of mundane things (like forcing Elias *in the long change period* to come all the way across the ice to dump the puck in for him when he could have himself) that are going to enrage someone like Sutter.

HAHA Maurice is whining how they couldnt break through our "trap"

Oh really?

I didn't see that, but I did see when a reporter asked him what a felt about the refs "putting their whistles away" towards the end of the game, as if to suggest that perhaps the Devils got away with a lot.

On a lighter note: Devils now 4-2 in playoff OT's in the Parise era. :handclap:

Maybe Rolston is one of those guys that just needs a kick in the pants every once in a while.
Frankly, Rolston never did get a shot on a top line this season. Between his injury troubles and his struggles while the rest of the top-6 flourished, he was never given an opportunity. He's still Brian Rolston, folks, not some schlub.

what game was he watching? they had plenty of chances in the 2nd and 3rd and botched the ones that Marty didn't stop. they owned the boards in our defensive zone and we were giving alot of "free entry"...

maybe they shouldn't have fired Peter from Uniondale so quickly

ironically he also said we trapped in game 1 and was the reason why they lost

we choked them out in game 1 with sound defense in the offensive/neutral zone. and the first period of Game 2. But we haven't played remotely like that since. Just alot of backing in and flailing around on the boards, where they're beating us to the puck since we're slothy and playing Julienball.

if he truly thinks this, he's an idiot. they must have been trapping on Zajac's GW if that's what he thinks trapping is. same kind of D, same kind of result. lol, who in their right mind backs in on Parise and gives him a free entry?

Yeah he did. He started the season there (albeit briefly) and ended the season getting a decent look in the top 6. He's also been playing with top players on the PP.

Hence why I always hated him, his entire demeanor is like that....even when his team loses he just dismisses the other team completely, he cannot comprehend when his team is bested but at the same time will not let you know it matter-of-factly. He just puts these subtle jabs out over and over and tries to brush it off.

he had an awful game and I think it was a legit call in 2009. Bobby does not realize it's 2009. but the thing there is, one he failed on a dump in from the OFFENSIVE ZONE, so all he has to do is hit the bench and get a replacement. It's sad enough to do that, but then he engages instead of getting off? So he takes a penalty, and THEN he gets off. lol, it's pathetic.

he also was out on the first goal when no one marked anyone and he had some doozies of plays, like the one I mentioned during the game, where he botched a dump-in (or just didn't give a ****), and Elias, exhausted, has to come all the way across the ice to beat a Cane to the puck (keep in mind Bobby is still around during this, dicking around), to dump it in for him, and then come back and make the change.

This is in the long change period and is totally inexcusable, because a player he should have enabled to get off the ice has to go bail him out so he doesn't give up an odd-man rush on a mundane play

HAHA Maurice is whining how they couldnt break through our "trap"

If Maurice thinks we were running the trap, he shouldn't be coaching. What a disgrace. Learn the game.

I was listening to the post game and when he said the word "trap" I was like ummmm no you just didn't do that - then I rewound the DVR and listened again and he wasn't talking about the Devils playing the trap, he was referring to falling into a trap by thinking a certain way and playing a certain way. Relax folks, it was not a jab at the Devils like everyone thinks.

Frankly, Rolston never did get a shot on a top line this season. Between his injury troubles and his struggles while the rest of the top-6 flourished, he was never given an opportunity. He's still Brian Rolston, folks, not some schlub.

All year I posted my lineups with Rolson on the wing with Parise and Zajac but then said it would never happen because Langs is a permanent fixture. Tonight we saw what great success it would have been.

It wasnt just the crowd noise, the on-ice noise was barely audible as well. Chico's mic was functioning properly, and as you said, it was like Uber-Cangio all-night long with hid mic being too loud.

Another ***** performance from MSG.

All year I posted my lineups with Rolson on the wing with Parise and Zajac but then said it would never happen because Langs is a permanent fixture. Tonight we saw what great success it would have been.

I'm still not buying it. I realize everyone on the telecast said how great Rolston played, but I just didnt see it. I think he played a decent game, but nothing phenomenal really.

The best thing he did all night was that hit that kind of allowed Martin to create on the first goal, but the 2nd best thing he did all night was miss two rebounds so that Zajac could score in OT.

Rolston's been slowly improving since he had that chat with Sutter toward the end of the season. He isn't Rafalski-soft anymore, which is definitely a good sign. He's been finishing checks and getting involved in scrums. It's nothing special, but he's showing signs of life. Of course, it doesn't mean much if he doesn't build on it.

did you forget the first 20 or so games when all Langs did was hook and get penalties 50 feet behind the play? he made up for it the 2nd half of the season, but go look at his game log. Look at the PIMS and PTS columns. I wanted Rolston there to start the season so bad and Langs with Madden.

When a team wins, generally accolades are tossed around, and when a team loses, not so much. If another puck deflects off Havelid's calf and behind Brodeur in OT tonight, no one is pointing out the "good game" he had. Sorry, he played decent and did a good job filling in on an unfamiliar line, but he certainly wasnt outstanding or anything remarkable tonight.

Rolston started off well, looking hungry. He obviously created the first goal with his forecheck (same with Shanny on the second). Then throughout the game he started doing the old stuff again, namely not finishing his checks. He was decent on the cycle throughout the game, and his speed is a little bit of an improvement over Langenbrunner, but unlike El Capitan, when there was a puck that was up for grabs, he rarely ever managed to win it.

Rolston stepped up big tonight, just the fact that the first line scored early was big enough...kept the Bingo Ball in the closet. I think he adds a great dimension to Zajac and Parise's line in that both of those guys work so hard down low, if he can put a hard shot in a spot where it's expected, rebound goals will come.

My brother and a few buddies who I watched the game w/ jokingly said he could have prevented Zajac's GWG if he didn't miss the rebound on Zajac's initial shot. Lol.

I'm a Rolston believer (and no, not b/c I dropped a lot of $$ on his jersey). He is obviously a good player and not too many guys could claim to have scored 3 straight 30 goal seasons on the WILD!! I don't feel like looking..but I'm off the top of my head I'm guessing only Gaborik could claim to have done that. Once he gets used to and is confident to play in Sutter's system and finds the right guys to mesh with, I think he'll become the player that we signed him to be. With the exception of prior to his injury and 6 straight games he played with Elias and Gio after the all star break, he has played w/ guys like Holik, Rupp, PL3 and Clarkson! Not the most offensively gifted bunch. Take that into account and the fact I don't believe he is 100% healthy.

More often than not..he either shoots it into the chest of the goalie or 5 ft. wide of the net. I'm glad he missed b/c who knows where the puck would have gone, although like you said, I think he would have buried it. From the angle and him being lefty, who knows if the puck would have gone in. I have all the confidence in the world in this team, but you don't win cups by going 1-13 on the PP. That has to improve...and quickly. It will inevitably cost us games in the future if we don't capitalize on more chances.

i find with the Devils we can never have both special teams working great. When our Powerplay is strong our PK sucks and when our PK sucks our pp is strong. If we cant have both i rather have a great PK because we are strong 5 on 5.

the PP isn't an issue as long as you kill all of your PK's. this is of course, if you are the better team 5 on 5. I believe this to be the case. The problem today was that we were 0 for infinity on the PP, and for all intents and purposes, gave up a PP goal.

I would like to see something better, but I would have liked to see something better pretty much all season... the % was fine during the regular season but there's nothing glossy about the PP, it seems predicated almost on hard work and random luck... that's not going to be good enough the deeper you get into the pool.

and the standing around is getting epic. the PP seems to consist of 1) work puck to forward point. 2) everyone stand exactly where they are 3) can forward point shoot the puck? if yes, shoot the puck on net (miss more often than not), if no, work the puck around until the forward point can find a shot. 4) hope for rebound
on stick, if not, regroup in neutral zone after clear.

we have better talent than that, we're an offensive team, and it's really not acceptable.

Completely agree. We're one of, if not the best, 5-on-5 teams in the league, but our special teams (namely the PP) HAS to get better. Like you said, it seems to thrive on luck, and we're going to need more than that to go deep. Bottom line is that we don't pass across the box enough to stretch it out....This whole working it around the perimeter garbage doesn't fly...

While the Devils have been among the best teams playing five on five, they still need to get the pp spitting fire and brimstone. It only gets tougher from now on and games are decided with one or two goals.

imho, the pp doesn´t get the puck going quick enough. I wouldn´t mind if the guy possessing the puck is a stationary firepost, when the other four guys are constantly making themselves available to receive the pass, as they have, when things are clicking. I´m just a layman, but the problems that have occured, I believe have to do with the timing and maybe some mental obstacle preventing them from improvising - in which especially Elias and Parise are capable of.

As of late, it has been somewhat difficult for the Devs to rush the puck in to the zone if Martin or Elias have not done the job. And when they have got into the zone it takes another 10-15 seconds to get the quintet orchestrated into their positions. I find it odd that they don´t do the re-positioning on the fly, but try to get where they are supposed to be and it is only until then, before they can start the actual powerplay.

You make it so much easier to play on even strength when you are not chasing but holding on to the lead (by capitalising on the man advantage). When you have a powerplay to be feared of it makes taking chances just a little more dangerous for the other team.

And my two cents on Rolston: I´m really glad he showed up last night. After a promising start, he became more or less absent towards the spring. He has done good plays almost in every game, but consistency and sharpness have been missing.

This year was anyway going to be somewhat of adjusting to the Devils and learning away the Wild years. It just got worse thanks to the injury. This year is more or less wasted as a whole, but hopefully the Devs get more mileage of him in the forthcoming playoff campaign and if Roli keeps on like last night, they will.

Pretty much. For the life of me I dont understand why they dont try to work the puck down low for some "muck goals" and jam plays. If you're not scoring (and we all know they're not), that's your best bet. It's like they waste the entire power play trying to set up for the ESPN2 highlight goal of the decade, which never comes.

Or, when they do just shoot from the points, 33% of the time it gets blocked, 42% of the time it misses the net, and just 25% of the time do they get a shot on goal.

He's been hitting much more the last 2 or so games of the regular season, and now the playoffs (granted he normally doesn't hit hard). He wasn't hitting or going into the corners hard at all prior. I think he started to realize he had to up his intensity, and now he realizes his ankle is going to break. This can only be a good thing for him. Hopefully Langs comes back for game 5, and Rolston takes his found confidence back to whatever line he plays.

And another thing. CAN WE PLEASE STOP PASSING IT BACK TO ROLSTON ON EVERY SINGLE POWERPLAY?!! My friend, not even a casual hockey fan, was able to point that out! I understand the rationality... Ward is too good a goalie to give him straight shots. You're only going to score deflection shots. Well, do some inside deflection stuff... mix it up a little bit. God damn we're predictable out there!

He was out for 4 games. I'm just saying, players tend to take a penalty whenever they've been out for a couple of games (as a result of not being able to keep up with the play). If you look at any guy who was out with an injury, they often comeback with a penalty in their first game. I noticed it with Briere and McCabe, off the top of my head. I believe Rolston did it too.

The Good, Bad and Ugly

The Good: We win in OT!, Marty, Parise and Someone else scores besides Zach in Gio and Travis.

The Bad: Carolina is back to blocking a ton of shots from the point. The defense needs to change things up a bit. Did Elias play last night? He needs to get back to taking the puck to the net and not get back to playing his perimeter game that makes him invisible.

The Ugly: PP, PK, the last two third periods and the Devils drive me to smoke.

However, that was a gusty win last night!
