"Rangers Suck?"

This has probably been reiterated so many times in numerous threads, but I had to start this thread.. just because.

I sat in 214 tonight, and the amount of "Rangers Suck" material is incredible. "Everybody clap your hands if the Rangers suck" (ruined the Godzilla clap for me), The dozen or so vanilla "Rangers Suck" chants, as well as other random remarks about how they suck. Additionally, I heard people starting Rangers Suck chants after the game in one of the towers... really?!

I find it a disgrace and so childish. To the common fan, it is cute and attractive - but now its getting downright embarrassing. Every time I heard someone starting to whistle, I would yell "SHUT UP" and my casual Devil fans that came with me didn't understand the hatred for the Rangers Suck chant.

I've never really had a problem with it before, but for some reason it really got to me tonight. Some fellow "Devils fans" in school also ignore and neglect everything Rangers. I was watching a Zherdev "dangle video" on YT and the man has some sick dangles, and my friend refused to watch it because it was a Ranger.. this has happened a few other times with "Devils fans".

Call me crazy, but I just think this behavior is embarrassing for the organization, but more so the fans who participate in it and drag the rest that are Devils fans first, but also hockey fans.

PS- There was a person with a Dubinsky jersey on in 214 or 215 :shakehead

/endrant -- I should try getting this on the Verizon Rant Day or whatever in between periods :sarcasm:

Don't worry...you're not the only one who hates the chant!

While I do the "rangers suck" thing to godzilla...that's the only time I do it because it's only done once and it's a little tradition.

But the WHISTLE HAS GOT TO GO!!

I loved the "stop the whistle" chant in the 2nd or 3rd

You hit it stop on with the common fan.. I liked it when I went to to the occasional game (at CAA).. The more games I attended, the more I hated it.. It's just stupid now

It was the first time I haven't laughed at Godzilla, the balcony seating don't really have unique chants and it was my first time in the uppers in a while.

2) Exactly.. some of the people doing the whistle can't even get it right, lol.

That wasn't for the Rangers suck whistle. It was for this annoying **** that had a whistle and just kept blowing it non-stop for like 15 minutes in section 133.

Honestly, this thread has been started so many times, usually after a important loss.

As long as a single Rangers fan shows up to a Devils/Hurricanes game, I think the chant is fine, in moderation, like anything else. It has its place, and I think it is a perfect mockery of a team who chants about a hall of fame/4 cup winner who has been retired for ages.

I was too busy holding a towel over my face saying to my self "here it comes, here it comes, **** me, here it comes", seeing the way our team gave up in the OT tonight.

I can tolerate a few Rangers Suck chants during a Rangers game, but I just think the whole spiel of doing it multiple times in completely irrelevant games is very old.

Sure, one can say "just don't participate in it", but the fact is that any outsider from another fan base will associate a Devils Fan with this act of class. A lot of Devils fans on here have had discussions about "class" and I find it pretty hypocritical since this chant is in place

I absolutely abhor the "Rangers Suck" chants. They're sophomoric. They make us look like we can't get over the "second class syndrome" vis-a-vis the Rangers, which is ludicrous since we've been the better team now for the majority of our existence here. But if we don't feel inferior, why constantly chant it when we're not even playing them?

Furthermore, it's a direct copy of the RANGERS FANS' stupid "Potvin Sucks" chant. Not only is it a stupid, ignorant, low-end thing to do (exacerbating other team's fans' perspectives that our fanbase is ... base), but it's not even remotely original. If you acknowledge that the "Potvin Sucks" chant was stupid, why assimilate it here? And the Ranger fans did it due to the absolute superiority of the Islander teams.

It reminds me of the Boston Red Sox fans' inferiority obsession with the Yankees. I guy I know was in Boston and near Fenway when a playoff game let out - a Boston win - and they were chanting Yankees Suck. It's the kind of thing you pity those poor fools for - they can't even enjoy their team's success without relating it to their inferiority obsession with the Yankees.

Those Devil fans doing this - no matter how much vitriol you wish to spew back at this post or others criticizing this chant - are exactly the same as those inferiority complex Boston and Ranger fans. Exactly the same. You debase the fanbase as a whole - you bring us down to your level, and you make it seem that all of us measure our successes and failures through the prism of the New York Rangers, which is so far from the truth it's silly. But perception is reality in life - and the perception of us suffers for your childishness.

I don't think it's a section versus section thing, it's jsut that they can't hear one another. I sit in 229, midway between 225 and 232...this is what the start of games sound like

Lets go Lets Devils go Devils

On rare occasions it works out perfectly and it's

I think this is part of the reason why my section never starts up chants...we all wait til everyone is in unison and it sounds right.

As for this thread, next time I go to a game, esp. in the 200s, I should bring a large ass sign that says "Inferiority Complex".
PLEASE DO!
Can someone kill the guy with the horn?
I love it, but I've never sat remotely close to the guy so... :sarcasm: On TV its great because it makes the game sound.. epic? It just reminds me of the 1995 final game for some reason that I have on tape, I love it.
I love it honestly.

Beats the hell out of "Let's go ______" and all of the generic chants. That one's ours and it's unique and it's fun.
No... Sure its "unique" compared to other chants, but it is a carbon copy of the Ranger's chant.

The chant itself is only relevant when we are playing them obviously. Other times, especially during a playoff game, we should need to ignore it. This is the Rock's second season in the playoffs and we need to give as much support to this team as possible without this lowball chant. So we could see this deep give us the deep playoff run they deserve.

I don't know what to say about horn. I mean, I like it in theory but it world work better if our team chant went along with it. I love hearing the horn when watching teams like the Pens (despite hating them) at home because it makes sense. The horn for us, doesn't make sense to me sometimes.

I would love to hear more D-E-V-I-L-S chants and of course LGD chants. It doesn't have to be in unison, though would be nice, as long as we're cheering on our team as much as possible.

Stop crying, its a fun chant. The ****ing Rangers chant about a hall of famer who retired 20 ****ing years ago, who cares.

I don't mean to be a troll or anything. But what Potvin did had a HUGE impact on the team. Ending the season of Nilsson, when the team could've beaten the Habs in the . It's not some random chant. Of course it is irrelevant when they play teams like NJ, Philly, Atlanta, and I hate that. The Islanders or Panthers(Potvin is the announcer for Panthers) should be the only teams. Think about it as if Marc Staal took out Parise or Zajac for the year, which was the closest NJ would win the cup in 15 years.

Actually, you're really not trolling with this comment. It was a significant event in NYR history and is ingrained in the entire culture of the NYR/NYI rivalry.

And as for Marc Staal taking out Parise, that almost happened last year in the playoffs when Christian Backman crosschecked him in the mouth. Fortunately for us, Zach is a tough SOB (despite his frat boy/steal your chick away from you looks) and played right through it.

I don't get why people have such a problem with the Rangers Suck chant and yet defend Cameron on the grounds that he gets the crowd into the game...imo for better or worse the Rangers Suck chants do more to get the crowd in the game (and are more honest) than some hired dope throwing t-shirts during stoppages.

Granted I don't partake in Rangers Suck that much and sometimes it gets overdone, but to me anything that gets the crowd louder during the game is good.

What an intelligent post! I especially enjoyed reading the bold parts! :shakehead :help:

Its the truth. Wasn't "crazy" enough for you?

I consider the Habs to be a classy organization. They boo the U.S. National anthem and everyone still calls them classy. I doubt chanting about how a rival team sucks makes us less "classy".

That team as an entity perhaps is considered "classy", but they have the 2nd most obnoxious fanbase after the NYR.

You should see the Canadiens fans around here after a typical Brodeur win in Montreal.

Obnoxious isn't bad though. It means they're all involved and goin nuts.

No, I'm talking about when they post here, criticizing Brodeur, the Devils, Devils fans and anything to do with the state of NJ.

Simply saying another team sucks isn't the issue. The issue is that some Devils fans say it when its completely irrelevant and sometimes untrue. Ex: When the Rangers were completely crapping on the Devils earlier this year, last year, and last year's playoffs. The Devils lost the last game against the Rangers, and the Rangers could be doing better in their series, against a higher seeded team after tonight.. so statistically, no, the Rangers do not suck.

I'm not kidding either. I'm probably picking up the supplies tomorrow and I'm not using markers. I'm using black paint! And I will hold it up every time I hear that dumb whistle!

You take a silly chant that seriously? :help:

You people care more about doing a stupid little chant when we're losing, or we've lost then you do about what our team has done, win or lose!

Some of you also seem happier when the Rangers lose than when we win!

The chant should be put on hold the rest of this playoff series, it's sounds dumb when we're playing another team in a playoff game.
People need to come fired up to next game and make some serious noise.
I thought Friday's crowd was good at points, but mostly a wait and see type crowd.

You're a pretty classy Devils fan. I applaud your objectivity and sense of reality. I'm not here to troll, I saw this thread and what you said and thought it would be worth risking a pile-on...

It's one thing for you guys to do it when we're playing against each other but another when it's a totally different team in the playoffs.

I hate how the Rangers still do Potvin sucks. I wasn't even alive when it happened, and I don't participate in it at MSG unless we're playing the Isles and even then, it's kind of old. The moronic fans that are screaming it at a different team (who probably has no idea why) make us look retarded.

I heard maybe 3 whistles today. Only 1 people actually said "Rangers Suck" to.

People were getting angry at the lady doing it in 233

Yep, they seemed to be few and far between. One of them was very weak, the other 2 or 3 were normal.

I guess everyone read this thread

I want to say it's our fanbase turning a corner. I sure hope so at least. Sellouts, no retarded chants,...What's next?
