John Oduya

Was looking through some defencemen stats on BTN and came across David John Oduya.

What's the story with this guy?

His BTN #'s are great: QualComp = 0.03, Corsi = 10.3 (albeit with a QualTeam = 0.09) while averaging almost 21 minutes per game.

His GA/60 on 4v5 is a respectable 6.68 with 2.74TOI/60.

Then I see he's a UFA who only made $600K this year?

Wow.

So are you guys going to sign him?

Are his stats deceiving?

How does he play?

Thanks.

Oduya presents a great story. I think there are very few people who imagined him being where he is today in terms of talent. He is top-4 on the team, and perhaps the second best overall D-man on the team. There is no doubt in my mind he will be re-signed. His stats don't quite reflect his offensive ability. Johnny also plays a great two-way game.

It's Johnny Orrduya

Yes he will be re-signed, as he is one of the budding young talents and his skating abilities are spectacular. Just what this team needs - a Dman that can skate the puck up into the offensive zone.

Oduya is probably my second favorite defenseman on the team. He's just about always in great position and knows what to do with the puck. I was definitely surprised about him making an impact on the team like he did. Now, it looks like this D-corps would suffer without him if he was out of the line up *knock on wood*. I would be shocked if he wasn't re-signed and went elsewhere.

His stats are a bit off base, especially if you don't watch him every night.

Oduya is great and we better re-sign him. My favorite defensemen on the team and arguably 2nd best on the team behind Martin.

He is ****ing clueless in his own zone. And I'm not saying that because our season is toast, he's ****ing useless.

i think you need to stay away from bridges, buildings, ropes, knifes and anything else you can commit suicide with at least until our next game.

He hasnt been great, but he has not been as bad as you say he has.

He's been fine, every defenseman has been fine.
The unit has played pretty damn well, overall so far IMO.

I don't mind Johnny as a top 4-defenseman who gets some time on the PP, however I do think we need another Martin-caliber defenseman. This summer is going to be interesting.

He'll make money next season. I'm not sure we will sign him for cap reasons.

So are you going to explain any of this, or are we supposed to just know what it means?

It wasn't the loss. Before the game when he missed practice I said:

That's too bad. If anyone needs practice it's Oduya.

I just don't like his sorry excuse for defensive play win or lose.

Oh, and he made $600k because he has never played this well before. It's definitely unfortunate for us that he's a UFA now. Let's sign him for 12 years $24 million. 6, 4, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1.

And hope he doesn't notice that's only $22 million.

Go to www.behindthenet.ca

Great site with a ton of info.

BTN#'s = Stats at "Behind the Net"

QualComp = Quality of Competition. Any thing over 0 is good. 0.09 is about the toughest competition #, 0.03 is very respectable.

QualTeam = Quality of Teamates. 0.09 is near the high end. Oduya plays with good teamates.

Corsi = Stat created by Jim Corsi who used to be a coach for the Sabres. Basically scoring chances for your team while you are on the ice - scoring chances against. Anything positive is good, especially against tough competition.

GA/60 4v5 is how many goals get scored while he is on the ice during a penalty kill. Anything starting with a 4 is very, very good, 8+ is bad.

Have fun playing around on that site. Once you figure things out there is a real wealth of information. I surprised this info is available for free.

While he has certainly brought his game up to new levels, and is miles ahead of his atrocious playoff play 2 years ago, I always feel he gets a little too much credit over Martin.

He still drops his stick a little too often, definitely tries to play it up the boards into opposing players far too often, and CLEARLY whiffs or stumbles on the point leading to a breakaway too often.

I think everyone opinion of this guy is jaded by Doc and Chico's love for this guy.

Take his last major blunder for example. Our game vs TB. Pass to the point, Oduya winds up for a slapper, whiffs, leaves the puck at his skates, stumbles, Malone takes it down and scores on a breakaway. They immediately show a dejected Oduya on the broadcast but that is it. Not a single mention of how Malone got that breakaway by the broadcast crew after the camera glance.

But if Oduya scores one goal its "Orr duya" and that replay will be all over the highlight reels for the next 2 weeks.

Just call it like I see it.

Yeah part of the reason Oduya has such good stats is mainly due to playing with Paul Martin. Martin is the star here, he covers up Johnny's mistakes so you rarely see a hiccup. If you paired Oduya with the other defensemen, his numbers come back down to earth. Don't get me wrong, he's improved tremendously in the last few years, but we're not talking about another Orr or Lidstrom.

I don't see how anyone could possibly say anything bad about Oduya. He is the best skating defensemen on this team by far, he is solid along the boards and in front of his net, he doesn't make too many glaring mistakes...

If there is one thing to gripe about IMO, he could contribute more offensively than he does. But that is nothing new in Devil-land where keeping your end safe and making the safe play is priority #1. I remember we/us/devil fans said the same thing about Scott Niedermayer (offensively).

Ya none of the defensemen you can call "good" could ever possibly have that happen to them
