No matter... If it does get broken, Marty will just have to re-break it next year.

Kipper and Marty are on my fantasy team, so it's happy days for me.

No. Let him have the record. In the new era 50 wins are not out of reach for the goaltenders in this league.

Let Kipper have that record if he wants it so bad. Come back to me when he's closing in on 550. ;)

He needs to win 12 of 20 games. and some of them are against the Devils, Flyers, 2 against the red wings, 1 against san jose.. so they have some difficult games. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Plus 1 record is nothing, how many does Marty have?

If Kipper does it, good for him, he deserves it if he can do it, just like when Marty did it.
As for being bogus, we weren't saying that when Marty did it.
You tip your cap, that's what you do.

It is a bogus record even though Brodeur has it. What Im hoping is that it doesnt ever taint the all time wins record that Marty will soon have. Marty woul dhave had it even without shootout wins. Im just hoping no one takes it from Brodeur based solely on shootout wins.

Marty is going to crush the wins record to the point that he would even have it without shootout wins.

I don't really care whether someone breaks the win record, but would prefer it happen after Marty's career is over, it'll only give him another excuse to try to play 75 games next year.

Obviously it would suck for any devils to have someone break their record. I looked at kipper's numbers about 2 weeks ago and realized it was a definite possibility. Hopefully it doesn't happen.

It was improbable 2 weeks ago, with Calgary having 5 B2Bs and games against SJ, DET....but then they won 5 in a row and it got me worried.

Kipper just got pulled in the TB game though, so even if they come back and win McKinney gets the W :)

In this league now, it really isn't going to be all the difficult for the record to be broken. Kipper plays all the time like Marty and Nabokov, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if one of them breaks it next season, of it keeps getting broken over the next few seasons.

with SOs we know the actual value of the wins in a season record.

As long as Marty finishes with 552 regulation/OT wins by the end of his career, the whole "shootoutz helpd Marty record system" goes out the window

Devilswede

Calgary is looking for a goalie so they can rest Kipper down the road here.....so he might not get as many starts as he'd like to.

And hopefully he'll have more games like he had last night. :naughty:

Love the shutouts record....The all-time wins record and all-time shutouts record, which Marty Brodeur is currently chasing, are much more prestigious than the single season versions. These two are the Holy Grail of goaltending records. They are the goaltending’s equivalent to Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals scored and points scored records.

I was. Even if he keeps it....meh. He had like 7 shootout "wins" that year?I was just studying the progression of the single-season wins record a couple of days ago.

The record that Marty Brodeur broke had belonged to Philadelphia's Bernie Parent. The Flyers netminder's record 47 wins in 1973-74 came when the NHL didn't even have an overtime period let alone a shootout.

However, there were 78 games scheduled that season. Terry Sawchuk set the NHL record for wins in 1950-51 with 44 wins without an overtime period and only 70 games scheduled that year. Does that make Parent's record "bogus" as well?

Furthermore, the record Sawchuk broke had belonged to Boston's Tiny Thompson. During the 1929-30 NHL season, Thompson won 38 of his team's 44 scheduled games. That means that Thompson won 86.4% of the games played by his team. Is Sawchuk's one-time NHL record "bogus" too?

I just think one has to look at the different eras of the NHL on something like this. The NHL may very well keep the current system for deciding games in place for the next 30 seasons. If that is the case, the record, who ever might hold it in the future, will have more standing among hockey analysts.

Sorta off-topic but..

With 19 games remaining for the Flames, Flames goalie Kiprusoff currently with 38 wins seems to be on the way to break Marty's 48 regular season wins record.

With the way the flames are playing, he may reach +50 wins, a record that would be hard to break with Marty getting older.

I hope the flames start to lose.

Owning that record is sweet and all, but thats not a record I really care about. If Kipper breaks it, then good for him. Obviously im hoping he doesn't break it, but hey, records are meant to be broken, so I won't feel the least bit upset.

Mason might break Brodeur's SO record.

He already has 10 in his rookie season. Assuming he plays 20 more years in the league, he would only need an average of ~5/season to pace Brodeur.
