Is Beauchemin any good?

He's been injured for much of this year and played below expectations last season if I remember correctly. However he was pretty good in 05-06 and 06-07, right?

Can I get a brief synopsis on his strengths, weaknesses, and level of play (1-6 D)?

Thanks!

Beauchemin struggled last season after Saviormayer's absence left him as the team's de facto #2. He tried to too much and ended up doing not a hell of a lot.

Beauchemin is a 3-4 guy IMO, is well-conditioned to eat a ton of minutes, has a smart stick on the pk, and when he's confident is a solid positional guy and smart bodychecker, with the occasional open-ice hit thrown in for some fan love. He can skate the puck out of the zone which should be his first option, because his first pass is not always put where he wants it, or where it should go. That's part of the reason he worked well with Niedermayer, who could draw the coverage and make the pass that gave Frankie space he needed to start the transition. That's his range. When he tries to be everywhere or loses confidence he's a liability, passing up good scoring chances and getting caught out of position. He's also a bit dopey and can be beaten one-on-one to the outside just about every time if he's watching the puck.

He started off this season well, a bright spot amongst absolute crap. Who knows where his level of play will be next season.

judging by my name you can tell that his last season performance really pissed me off, but at the beginning of the season he was sadly our leading goal scorer. I think he can be good, but he can also cost you games. Hell be overpayed as a free agent.

He's a number 3 dman who can eat up a ton of minutes in pretty much all situations. He is known for the occasional big hit and fight and he's pretty good positionally. Offensively he has a cannon of a shot but it rarely hits the net. Provided he isn't relied on to be the go to guy on defense you could expect 25-35 points while playing >25 minutes a night from him.

Skating was never an issue for him but the injury he suffered this year will likely adversely affect his performance somewhat so he may not be as effective as in previous years.

I should add that he has a big shot, along with perfect aim. The only problem is he always aims a foot wide of the net.

edit: damn. Paul beat me to a shot aiming comment.

He hits the net when he is playing at a confident level, it only goes crazy with the rest of his game when he is playing above his head and loses that confidence. Last year to me was an abberation due to just too much hard TOI. Give him the 2nd pairing reigns with pp time and he'll score 12-15 goals.

A good example of a well-aimed shot is goal 4 in game 5 of the SC finals. Check the video; it starts at about 3 minutes in.
