Talentless Practise 02-22-2009, 08:17 PM Amongst all the doom and gloom i thought about a different approach for next season. I think "one more run" is still a viable option considering we have a lot of talent with good contracts for next season.
-Giggy is likely to have a bounceback season, considering his improved play of late.
-Ryan still on his entry-level deal.
-Selanne on his last? season for cheap
If we could get Scotty to go for it once more with the Olympics coming on a relatively cheap (5-6M) one year deal and have the Samueli's commit to one more season, we'd have rougly 16 million to fill out the roster.
Kunitz-Getz-Perry
Ryan-4M-Selanne
Moen-Ebbett-1.5M
Brown-Carter-Parros
Pronger
Niedermayer
3.5M (Beauch?)
2M (O'Donnell?)
Huskins
Mikkelsson/Salcido/Festerling
Giggy
Hiller
With fair deals for re-signees (Scotty 6, Moen 1, Brown .6, Huskins .8) that's about 55M. If Sammy takes around 2 we could have him too and have Ebbett as a callup.
Thoughts?
Spankatola Jamnuts 02-22-2009, 08:32 PM I think given his recent play Ebbett's a legit option as 2nd line center, and given his Ebbett-ness I'd never use him in a shutdown role. Use that money on Pahlsson or a D upgrade.
Talentless Practise 02-22-2009, 08:48 PM A Ryan-Ebbet-Selanne line is a bit "problematic" in the defensive zone to be polite. Also, most of the teams in the league don't have a shutdown line and ours hasn't been shutting anyone down. Maybe Ebbett could play wing on the 3rd line with Moen and Sammy (should he re-sign).
Jerky Leclerc 02-22-2009, 08:53 PM The idea that any team has a chance at the cup is bunk. There really is only a few teams good enough to win 4 playoff rounds. The Ducks currently have too many holes to compete. Even if we get in, we are not good enough to beat 4 good teams four times in seven games. The Ducks would be smart and sell this team.
1manband 02-22-2009, 09:33 PM Ideal scenario in my eyes
Kunitz-Getz-Perry
Ryan-Ebbett-Selanne
maybe switch kunitz and ryan, 1 speed and 1 heavy cycling line
Moen-Sammy/Carter-1.5M
Brown-Carter/call-up/UFA-Parros
possible call ups - Bodie, Wirtanen (4th C)
Pronger - OD/ UFA/ Call up
Niedermayer - 3.5M (Beauch?)
Festerling - Mantador
2M (O'Donnell?) - as cool as that would be probably not going to happen
mikkelson needs more time in the minors, havent seen enough of salcido yet, has looked ok though
Giggy
Hiller

I'm a fan ok keeping ebbet there and spending the money on a dman personally. I haven't looked at his stars but isn't he our best center in the circle after pahlsson?

He's our least bad C after Pahlsson (53.5) at 49.8%. Getzlaf is at 49.7.
Marchant is a poor 47.1. Morrison, as usual, is the worst at 46.8.
That's some putrid faceoffs.

Faceoff percentage is a tough thing to piece together, but I don't think Pahlsson is "bad" at all. For the amount of faceoffs they take, I don't consider Getzlaf or Pahlsson "bad". They aren't Brind'Amour, but they aren't bad.
It'd be nice to have a specialist I suppose. Marchant should be better, since he's a specialist of sorts. Morrison...gosh, doesn't do much well.
Faceoffs are something that really are highlighted when you watch the team in-person, night-in, night-out. I remember when I had Jets season tickets. My teenage self was *****ing about losing faceoffs for what seemed like ages. Apparently someone in management agreed, because they traded Stu Barnes to Florida for Randy Gilhen. Now, Gilhen couldn't do a whole lot, but what he could do was win faceoffs. Stu Barnes, on the other hand, was a very solid player until just recently. Well, the difference was palatable. Gilhen was used obsessively in important situations, and the team improved. He didn't do anything but win faceoffs, but dammit it was worth it.
I wonder if he still skates...

Oh for sure Pahlsson's good, the only good one. In fact 53.5 about as good as you could expect, save for Brind'Amour who's at 62 (!) percent right now. Typically the NHL leaders are at like 55 or something.
Getzlaf and Ebbett I guess I'm OK with. As long as they're roughly 50%, it's not that big a deal.
Marchant used to be good at faceoffs. Just another sign of how he's not really worth his contract. It especially hurts that he's our PK2 faceoff guy. Carter was good at faceoffs last year, but not so much this year. If he improved, he could really help us by playing 4th line center and PK2.
Just for fun: McDonald is at 59%. He took enough faceoffs per game to be 3rd in if he were on our team.
We could use a specialist. That's partially why Pahlsson's overworked, including putting him on the PP. Try looking up Gilhen and giving him a call.
