All-Time Devils by Number - #1

The idea is we'll go through all the numbers wore by Devils, deciding who the best Devil to have worn that number is.

I'll go with Chico.

This one is a battle of the goaltenders... It's between Burke and Resch, and that's a tough choice.

Yes, only time they spent here, with New Jersey. Otherwise some odd players would win certain numbers.

We did this on the Islanders forum as well. If memory serves, Chico was our number 1 as well.

Yep. I went with Chico because I think his time as a color man should count as something.

I went with Burke because of 1988.

Nothing against Chico, but its Burke for me. Maybe just because of ´88.

Burke almost by default. Chico never really accomplished much in his time in a Devils uniform. Burke has '88 at least.

Dunham is second to me because of the Jennings.

Kind of OT, but how did you guys react when Burke was traded?

Nothing against Burke or Resch but for me this was between Billington and Dunham since I was a huge fan of both. I was too young to see Billington as a devils so i went with Dunham. I liked him more then Billington anyway.

That was 1992... I became a fan in 1993. However, I seem to recall there being some friction between Burke and the Devils management, although I don't remember why.

That trade was certainly worthwhile, however. We had an incredible goalie draft year in 1990, making him expendable (Brodeur, Dunham, Schawb). As importantly, we got back two assets which turned out great for us: Bobby Holik and a 2nd round pick in 1993 (Jay Pandolfo).

The distinction is best Devil or best player.

Best player is Burke (until the "you cannot compare different eras" argument surfaces).

Best Devil is Resch.

Who besides Weekes has defeated the Devils in the playoffs?

All I have to say is #2 better be Joe Cirrella not that flunky block head that was booed out of town and responsible for the Devils loosing the 1994 ECF.

Been following the Devils since 7 games into their first season when my family got season tix. This really comes down to Chico versus Burke. Although Burke was the first player to bring a sense of excitement and hope to what had been a dismal franchise, gonna have to go with Chico - he was the face, personality and only reason to root in the early seasons.

If were taking commentating into account, then its chico, if it's just what they did on the ice I gotta go with Burke.

For on ice greatness as a Devil, it's Burke hands down. When he was traded, I was pretty nervous / upset. Even though he never quite recaptured the magic of 88, he was the only guy that made me feel like we had a chance. And, until Marty came along, that was pretty much true. As solid as Terreri was, we were not winning any hardware with him in net.

Kenyon Martin was the ****.

As a KVH fan I have a hate for Martin and Kidd since those two effectively ran him out of town. Nothing made me happier then to see Martin's career fall apart when he went to denver.

i do have a question, what do we do about shanny? 11 or 18? and are we talking about time with US??

You can't forget that Burke was one of the earliest Devils to have a contract dispute with the organization, leading to his holdout in the 1991-92 season.

Guess he didn't want to drink the Kool-Aid.

Yes, only time they spent here, with New Jersey. Otherwise some odd players would win certain numbers.

Further clarifying question. Are we considering time spent with the historical organization (Scouts, Rockies) wearing that number or just the current team as the Devils?

Not that Chico's time with the Rockies was much to be proud of, but it could have an effect and also with later numbers.

Edit: And to those asking about Chico and his broadcasting career, I'm pretty sure he doesn't wear a number in the broadcasting booth. And think about it, a career like Johnny Mac might be negatively impacted by his time spent with the organization while not wearing a number.
