Rogie21 01-19-2009, 06:41 PM With the Shanahan signing, do the Devils have room to add a college free agent (http://www.tsn.ca/columnists/darren_dreger/?id=258190)in April? Lamoriello has already scouted Matt Gilroy, BU's big (6-2, 202) puck-moving defenseman from North Bellmore, N.Y. who many thought would turn pro last Spring. Now he's a senior and a two-time All American. A good fit if there's enough money.
Harrison Ford 01-19-2009, 06:42 PM Dont think he would cost too much, we have 1.6 mil left? But i dont think he would count against the cap if we did sign him. How do you know he has been scouting him?
jkrdevil 01-19-2009, 06:46 PM As I seriously doubt any college free agent is going to be joining the NHL team any time this season, there is no issue as far as the cap is concern. The cap only involves players on the NHL roster. Any college free agent would presumably be assigned to Lowell or Trenton.
Harrison Ford 01-19-2009, 06:47 PM Now im excited about this. Matt Gilroy is awesome. Right handed defenseman with a big slapshot.

That and we usually have quite the success with Free Agents.

And he isnt European so he will get a shot with our organization...:yo::sarcasm::shakehead
kyle evs48 01-19-2009, 06:55 PM I suppose we'll see this offseason.

Well, you know, we tend to be lazy and arenīt keen on backchecking :sarcasm:
Classic Devil 01-19-2009, 06:55 PM The cap hit would have no impact unless the college player would be going straight to the NHL team. I'd like to see the Devils sign Gilroy, myself, but the Devils tend to find players who aren't getting any recognition in the media to sign.

Then what is Shanahan...:sarcasm:
Maybe this is his new years resolution.
Fred Garvin 01-19-2009, 07:08 PM Shanahan is Gionta's replacement:naughty:

hmmm....no he isnt. He is Pando's replacement for now.

well pandalfo should have never been resigned in the first place but who ever said that?
Classic Devil 01-19-2009, 07:15 PM well pandalfo should have never been resigned in the first place but who ever said that?
I did.
Fred Garvin 01-19-2009, 07:16 PM i've said this before, we think alot alike.:)
BigE7 01-19-2009, 07:17 PM Gilroy would be great, but I'm really hoping the Devils can get Thiessen. He is basically the sole reason Northeastern is ranked so high right now. 1.89 GAA, .940 SV%, and all this while facing 30+ shots a night. 701 shots against in 22 games played. 15-5-2. He's ****en incredible.
Maybe play out his final year next year, a year or 2 in the AHL, then work his way in as Marty's replacement.
Harrison Ford 01-19-2009, 07:20 PM Maybe we can sign both? :naughty:
BenedictGomez 01-19-2009, 07:21 PM There is zero chance of signing a college defenseman who goes straight to the NHL

same person?????:sarcasm:

Careful. :p:

Why do you say that? There have been plenty of Ds who go straight from college to the NHL. Some stayed, others had to do some AHL time. Last Spring, Colorado College All-American Jack Hillen went directly to the Islanders.
A few others: Paul Martin, David Hale, Tom Poti, Matt Carle, Tom Preissing, Thomas Pock, Rob Blake.
For some video of Gilroy (#97), go here (http://terrierhockey2.blogspot.com/). See 11/29, 1/3, and 1/17 games. Scored BU's fifth goal on 1/17, the day after suffering a dislocated shoulder and a bad chest bruise. 2nd goal on 1/3 on one-timer (about 3 min. in) Tournament MVP.
Richer's Ghost 01-20-2009, 09:54 AM I did.
I did too - but that was based on his play last year and his underpayment all those years...
Now it looks more like that might have been the peak before the fall into the abyss. :(
Das Uber 01-20-2009, 11:11 AM I did too. My summer theme was "deturdification".

It's rare. And it usually happens with a special talent. And it usually happens on a weaker team. And I cant give you an example of it happening on a good team right before the Stanley Cup Playofffs. Throwing a rabbit with a broken leg to a pack of wolves would be more humane.

I think the idea would be to sign him to play next year. But you could let him practice with the team and watch the playoffs from the press box. Pretty much exactly what they did when they signed Zach right before the 2004 playoffs. Remember when we all wanted to see Zach to help an anemic PP that postseason?
Looks like it'll be a competitive market to land Gilroy though. More than likely a repeat of Wheeler this past offseason. I'm sure we're interested, but so should everybody else.

Devils are definitely interested. Like Zach Parise, he was just featured as a "Face in the crowd" by SI. There's also an article about him in the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/23/sports/hockey/23vecsey.html?ref=sports). The Gilroys are quite the family; I don't see how anyone can not root for a kid who's been through so much.
I think Gilroy could be what the Devils had hoped to mold Greene into, and certainly an upgrade from Mottau. I wonder if LL would honor his number request?

Why not? Mogilny wore #89. LL (who, FWIW, is tight with BU's coach) would come off as Scrooge if he said "no."

Mogilny was an already established star in the league, as was Gilmour (#93) and Richer (#44) when they kept their numbers. This kid is not. He would be assigned a number... and like it.
Classic Devil 01-23-2009, 02:05 PM I actually think Lou would honor Gilroy's number request, because it's not about him, it's about something else. It's not so that he'd stand out, or to make him special. No, I'm pretty sure Lou would let Gilroy keep #97.
Brodeur 01-23-2009, 02:26 PM Gotta think the Bruins would be the frontrunner if they make a competitive offer. Another poster pointed out that the entire family moved to the Boston area and Matt's younger brother Kevin is a freshman at BU. Add in the Bruins' resurgance this year and they probably make the most attractive choice.
Edit: Here's the blip about the Gilroys moving to Boston - http://www.hockeyjournal.com/Article.php?ArtID=999828
And he’s done it all with Timmy in his thoughts, with Timmy’s number on his back, and with the family nearby, after the Gilroys moved to Sudbury, Mass., to be closer to him and Kevin, who is now a freshman forward at BU.
