VIEW THE FULL VERSION : OT: Promotion for playoffs
Jason MacIsaac 01-17-2009, 12:58 PM I think NJ should follow in the footsteps of Calgary and Philly and get the fans wearing certain colors. The only difference, like Philly did last year passing out orange teeshirts, New Jersey should pass out red and orange, the rink will actually look like it is in the middle of hell.

I agree. Is asking for free t-shirts really that hard? I mean just make them all XL and pass them out.
I mean you can get sweaty ones if your lucky enough to have them thrown to you in the lowerbowls...
Jiri Bicek 01-17-2009, 01:02 PM They did try this last year with the Rock Your Red slogan..
Problem was that they didn't hand out t-shirts.. They sold them at the Devils Den for $20 a piece
Darius Dangleaitis 01-17-2009, 01:03 PM I've been saying that for a while. Order 18,000 XXL t-shirts in either red, white, or black (I think black would look awesome), and pass them out at the door.
You could easily get PSE&G, Verizon, PNC, Prudential, or whoever to sponsor it.

Prob was that they didn't hand out t-shirts.. They sold them at the Devils Den for $20 a piece
You cant do that. Especially when there are much better shirts there for 5 more dollars.
To make something like that work, you have to give them out, plain and simple.
I think that it would be good for attendance too, especially if we arent playing a rival team in the playoffs. Promotions like that always put fans in the seats, just look at free hat night.
crashlanding 01-17-2009, 01:06 PM I think this promotion would be pretty cool but it most likely wouldn't work if we were playing the Rangers or the Flyers.
Harrison Ford 01-17-2009, 01:06 PM I think this promotion would be pretty cool but it most likely wouldn't work if we were playing the Rangers or the Flyers.
True, well they should do it if it is a non divisional team.

They may have even been $25 last year.. I remember walking up expecting a shirt (towels instead), then the people telling us we can buy Rock Your Red shirts in the store..
I was thinking, "ok.. Maybe they'll cut the price down on these certain shirts to try and get people to buy them.." Not the case

Exactly. If there not free or under 10, than it really is no point of making them in the first place.
jkrdevil 01-17-2009, 01:19 PM I remember they tried a white out against Carolina back in 2002, handing out white shirts. Practically no one put the shirts on and it was a complete failure.
cj225 01-17-2009, 01:34 PM Devils fans are a different kind of breed and some don't believe in things like that!
As far as the "rock your red" thing players were pissed off that they suggested this promo and weren't giving out the tshirts! Great marketing we have around these parts!
If we're playing a non-divisionval opponent it might work but again only if the team gives the people a shirt.
Last night they had a white out and they would put people on the jumbotron and make fun of them if they didn't have their shirts on. They also gave an entire section free sodas if that section had the most "white"! Something like that would entice fans to actually put on the tshirts!
BenedictGomez 01-17-2009, 01:35 PM New Jersey should pass out red and orange, the rink will actually look like it is in the middle of hell.
Like the concept, not the colors. 50% red and 50% black would be pretty cool though.

Exactly, I'm not one to normally fuss that much, but I was pretty outraged at this. Instead of it being a spirit building exercise (like it is EVERYWHERE ELSE), the Devils actually tried to profit off of it  It (and the Devils bench photos) was a big chink in the JVDB armor for me.

Again......both clever and creative ideas = not happening here.

I'm legitimately jealous.
It would not surprise me to see them hand out shirts this year. Perhaps they've wised up.
Harrison Ford 01-17-2009, 01:40 PM I think it is cooler to give out the black shirts, because didnt washington have a very similar phrase to rock the red? and they gave out free red shirts.

Yeah. A blackout would be ridiculous, and the first of the kind in hockey that I can think of.
Georgia does it for football and it's always awesome.

Black shirts are a bad idea because then the goaltenders (including yours) end up having trouble picking up the puck.
Dallas had a balckout last year and Turco complained about it for the reason above.

Our Marty is better though. His eyes are like eagle eyes when it comes to tracking the puck. If anything it would be worse for the opposing goalies.

Well, forget that then. Rock Your Red it is.

Thanks for pointing that out....yeah....the Devils completely ripped off the slogan.
Harrison Ford 01-17-2009, 01:57 PM Thanks for pointing that out....yeah....the Devils completely ripped off the slogan.
Also theres sounded much better, it was Rock The Red.
Jiri Bicek 01-17-2009, 02:09 PM Like the concept, not the colors. 50% red and 50% black would be pretty cool though.
It would be pretty awesome to have alternating sections in the arena of black and red... Have the dancers and co. do it before puck drop
When colleges do this it looks amazing..
Problem would be, like Darius said, the black interferes with the puck.. I think it happened in Phoenix as well..
If you want to get really fancy, have the lower bowl wear white, mezz wear red, and upper level wear black
Das Uber 01-17-2009, 02:16 PM I think they should do white. It shows up better on TV. Of course, it doesn't matter unless we sell out the building. There's a fine line with promotions like these. If you don't sell out the building, it makes it very obvious which seats/sections are empty and it looks weird.
The Devils should hire seat fillers for the playoffs. Hell, I'll do it for free.
Harrison Ford 01-17-2009, 02:21 PM thats why black would be good. because most of the seats that show up on the TV screen are the black seats, so people wouldnt even be able to tell. :handclap:
ILikeItVeryMuch 01-17-2009, 02:32 PM Give ...out...free...shirts...?
The idea escapes Devils management, and always has, I dont know why.
Easton 01-17-2009, 02:53 PM We can't even get fans in the seats, so why bother? It's gonna look stupid when you look around the arena and you notice a bunch of empty seats, even if black t-shirts were handed out.
ILikeItVeryMuch 01-17-2009, 03:00 PM Our attendance latley has actually been excellent and bodes well for us. Its a miracle considering the price of tickets and the economy.
Our last 4 home game attendance figures...
Attendance: 16,921 (96.0% full) vs Pitt
Attendance: 17,625 (100.0% full) vs Habs
Attendance: 14,798 (84.0% full) vs Ottawa on Football Playoff Sunday (remember what we used to draw against Ottawa at CAA? Subtract 5,000 from that total)
Attendance: 16,489 (93.6% full) vs Atlanta...on a mid week night.
People seem to forget, us with 16,000 fans in the arena equals a team like Buffalo having 24,000 fans in the seats when it comes to money earned.
Not to ****ing bad if you ask me. If the Devils dont raise the playoff prices we will be fine.

Every playoff game will be a sellout or close.
Harrison Ford 01-17-2009, 03:59 PM Every playoff game will be a sellout or close.
Exactly.
I think the slogan should be Back In Black but im not sure if that is copyrighted by AC/DC? hahaha i really dont know

Not to come in here and pooh on our attendance, because that has been done more than enough by fans and haters alike, but the bold games have outside factors that may or may not pay off in the post-season:
Pitt: Crosby/Malkin; Defending EC champs; local rival (Pens fans in some seats? maybe).
Habs: 100th season for the most storied franchise in hockey. (I know several fans of our rivals that could not get seats to see Montreal in their building, but could get them in ours).
Atl.: Two promotions that seem to have actually worked by our marketing dept.; college night (dirt cheap seats, and the upper bowl was PACKED), and 2 tix for $40.
So, yes, have had great attendance for a few games lately, but we cannot be so sure that we will continue the trend in the playoffs. Ticket prices do not help our attendance, our opponents do. So do effective marketing promos.
Will we have one, or both, in the playoffs? I hope so. But as mentioned, a failed "rock your ____" promotion could be an epic fail if the seats are not more than 85% full.

Pitt had few fans at The Rock that night but MTL had about 750 fans or so.
I'm hoping fans decide to go vs MTL this Wednesday for Shanahan's first home game to spike up attendance for that game. The next Pitt game should be very large on January 30 (Friday night).

I organized a "black out" for my High School's soccer game against a rival town.. was pretty crazy, the other team had white and the entire bleachers were just black and white split down the middle.
IDK how it worked, we didnt hand out shirts or anything, just peer pressured kids into wearing black or leave lol - funny thing was that it was one of those "hot" fall days where the sun just boils you
devsfan4life 01-18-2009, 01:58 AM Bring back the pom pom's from '95 :yo:

But no!

Black? It would look like empty seats on TV and we'd never hear the end of it - "Look, the rock is empty during a playoff game!!! roflcopter..."
RED - not white - RED, and make them a free giveaway. And hand out more white towels at another game to wave to make it a super contrast.
Marv4Life 01-18-2009, 12:58 PM I know this may sound stupid but what about going old school and handing out Christmas-green shirts? At the NHL store i saw a green NJD shirt that look similar to the old jerseys.
Or how about FREE red towels? Or red pom-poms? lol

kyle evs48 01-18-2009, 02:09 PM i'm a huge fan of towels.
red t-shirts and towels.
get sponsors on the towels/on the backs of the shirts.
hand them out for free.
bingo bango bongo.
ALine9900 01-18-2009, 02:34 PM Everyone at our games has a jersey anyway, I don't see the point of t-shirts.
Jersey Man 01-18-2009, 02:41 PM Everyone at our games has a jersey anyway, I don't see the point of t-shirts.
If you are given a free t-shirt at a Devils playoff game and they ask that all fans to wear them, I'm sure everyone would wear it, I know I would.
If t-shirts don't work bring out the towels!
