Yup, Malhotra being on the top line is even crazier. The Jackets have been really entertaining to watch this season, their youth is simply awesome.
If these guys had a legit centre (Gomez would thrive there, guaranteed) they would be legit.
Mr Bojanglez 01-16-2009, 08:49 AM Malhotra is on a tear for faceoffs, he's fifth in the league in %
Colin Whites Eye 01-16-2009, 09:01 AM gonna be out pretty much all day and wont be able to watch tonight
but anyways, LETS GO DEVILS!
Brooklyndevil 01-16-2009, 09:15 AM I see this as a very tough game tonight for the Devils, especially if Clemmer doesn't pick up his play. Umberger and Modini usually give the Devils some problems if I'm not mistaken.

Why would Clemmer picking up his play matter for this game unless Weekes gets chased out of the net?
Anssi is epic 01-16-2009, 09:34 AM great gdt, lgd, will be following.
Mr Bojanglez 01-16-2009, 09:34 AM Umberger and Modini usually give the Devils some problems if I'm not mistaken.
i agree with this part. Umberger takes it to them
MoonDragn 01-16-2009, 09:39 AM The Devils better come out tough and hard tonight. Theres some amazing talent on this team and should not take them lightly at all.
kyle evs48 01-16-2009, 09:39 AM i'm actually pretty scared of Mason.
Mr Bojanglez 01-16-2009, 09:41 AM i'm actually pretty scared of Mason.
I'm not at all. We do bad against bad goalies, we do well against good goalies. Duhhhh
MoonDragn 01-16-2009, 09:41 AM i'm actually pretty scared of Mason.
Need to pepper Mason with shots. Overwelm their defense which is their weakest link.
Their offensive minded forwards are not as defensive so if we keep the puck in their zone we should be ok.
Game Breaker 01-16-2009, 09:52 AM i agree with this part. Umberger takes it to them
I'm still pretty pissed with him about the time he crosschecked Brylin in the throat last year. Hopefully someone remembers and, in the words of Doc, "takes him to task".
cbjgirl 01-16-2009, 10:21 AM Two things from today's Columbus Dispatch that I wanted to share...
BEAST VS. THE EAST
The word is out on Blue Jackets goaltender Steve Mason, even among Eastern Conference clubs, whom the Jackets rarely face. Mason is 6-0 with a 0.66 goal-against average, .976 save percentage and four shutouts against Eastern teams, including two shutouts vs. Washington.
Player to watch: R.J. Umberger. He has feasted on his old foes in the Eastern Conference, scoring seven goals in nine games vs. the East.
This should be a good game. Looking at the stats, the CBJ are right behind the Devils for 5/5 play. Jackets just need to stay out of the box tonight.
Check here: http://blog.dispatch.com/cbj/ for the latest Jackets' news. The paper still had Nash and Murray as questionable for tonight. They may change that after the morning skate.
Someone was questioning the Filatov / Peca combo. They, along with Voracek contributed for Filatov's hat trick versus the Caps. That line clicked very well versus the Caps, but didn't look so hot on Tuesday versus Colorado. Hitch was really shuffling things on Tuesday.
Individually, the defense may look weak. But, I think the whole is greater than the sum of its parts in this case. The offense has been very inconsistent this season.
Malhotra on the first line does look odd, but he wins the faceoffs, plays defensively and basically provides the puck for Nash and Huselius to do their thing. It works. Is it ideal? No. But, it works.

I honestly haven't paid any attention to the Devils this season. The MO on this side is forecheck - forecheck - forecheck and be defensively responsible. Win the board battles, that kind of thing.

Crimson Devil 01-16-2009, 12:47 PM ^ More specifically...
It turns out Blue Jackets rookie goaltender Steve Mason was a big Martin Brodeur fan as a kid. The 20-year-old native of Oakville, Ontario owned a Brodeur jersey and had his room painted in Devils' colors.
"Growing up, my favorite teams was the Devils because of him," Mason said this morning.
So, it would have been big for Mason to play against Brodeur tonight if he weren't back in New Jersey recovering from a torn left biceps tendon.
"He was my idol growing up," Mason said. "That would have been pretty cool to play against him, but, with his surgery, that's not going to happen."
Mason, who leads the NHL with six shutouts, a 1.80 goals-against average and .936 save percentage, said he tried to copy Brodeur's style.
"The most important thing I took from him was his stickhandling," he said.

for our friendly outsiders.
cbjgirl 01-16-2009, 12:48 PM oh ok. i always liked his game.
Wilson was picked up to help our awful, awful power play (although it has been getting better).
Do you think the game will sellout for you guys tonight? We do a crowd prediction thread here and im considering doing a road edition.
A few things going on with this...
1. crowds increase in Columbus when the OSU football season is over
2. crowds increase when the team in winning (duh)
3. this game was one of those included in special ticket packages
4. there was a very large crowd on Tuesday (for a Tuesday) but I think a lot of that might have been because people were anticipating the "return of Foote" which didn't happen since he was injured.
5. The Jackets report actual butts in seats, not tickets sold
6. Eastern conference teams draw pretty well
My guess - not a sellout, but over 16,500. Max is 18,363 (or something close to that).

Brooklyndevil 01-16-2009, 12:51 PM Why would Clemmer picking up his play matter for this game unless Weekes gets chased out of the net?
Didn't pay attention to the posted lineup for tonight. But like that Sutter is getting Weekes in some games. I think Clemmer was getting to comfortable.

Well, he changes his mind depending on wind direction

No, both TG and Rich Chere reported that he won't be playing.
it's not like these 2 havent ever been wrong about something ever before.
So, while I'd be surprised if Shanny plays, I wouldnt die of a heart attack.
MoonDragn 01-16-2009, 01:08 PM Pretty sure he wouldn't be playing. He's more like a threat used to make the guys perform. Adding him to the lineup would remove the threat.

I'm interested in seeing if he really is awesome or if this has been a bit of a fluke.
If you look at it logically, NO ONE is as good as his statistics are, so clearly some of it has to be an anomaly.

The question for me is more of one that we're not going to be able to answer in one night. The reason Brodeur is so great is consistency, not over a season, but over a career. Year in, year out, playing 70+ games a season, and this season is the first he loses significant time to injury.
Mason is a great goaltender right now. Can he sustain the level he's currently at? Maybe for the rest of the season, but almost certainly not over the course of his career. How far he will fall, though, is another question entirely - I don't see his game just collapsing a la Raycroft.
The strongest aspect to Brodeur's game is the mental aspect.

I've seen Steve Mason since he was a youngster in the OHL and he HAS the make up of being one of the best goaltenders we've seen. It's not a fluke, home boy is the real deal.

i've been a frazee supporter since we drafted him. I liked his play during his freshman season and his play in the WJC. Minnesota was a bad situation after that with all that happened. I so happy he's doing well. As i said a few months ago he is well on his way to surpassing Clemmer and Denis as my favourite goalie for whatever thats worth.

It's absolutely 100% true, if you're in NJ it's gone, not allowed. Clemmer had it for a long time and all of a sudden he gets called up to NJ it's gone, same with P3L.

Fataldogg 01-16-2009, 03:08 PM Should be good. The Devils will have to get to Mason early, just pressure, pressure, pressure and try to grab a lead. Big#D 01-16-2009, 06:48 PM Recordable media are more expensive in Canada because there is a special tax on them to support the Canadian music industry. It started with tapes because people would use them to record music off the radio for free instead of buying the album. It continued with recordable CDs and now is on DVDs. I guess it might also support the Canadian television and film industries but I'm not sure about that.

Easton 01-16-2009, 06:57 PM I'm interested in seeing if he really is awesome or if this has been a bit of a fluke.
If you look at it logically, NO ONE is as good as his statistics are, so clearly some of it has to be an anomaly.
It certainly helps to play under Hitchcock's system. Compare Leclaire's stats the last couple of years. His GAA shrunk from 2.97 to 2.25 and collected 9 shutouts last season. Not sure why he's had so much trouble this season though.
Harrison Ford 01-16-2009, 06:58 PM good news that Marty is on schedule and will not be rushed.
Big#D 01-16-2009, 06:59 PM thats just silly. Nobody cares about the music industry.
Not in the US. But in Canada, where we fear losing our culture to the big bad gorillas to the south, they do care. Music, television and film are all protected as cultural industries and subsidized to ensure that the culture remains strong and vibrant.
That's the reason we tax our recordable media.
Add on top of that the fact that most products are initially priced by the manufacturer in US dollars and then converted to Canadian and given an additional profit buffer, everything in Canada generally costs more.
Even when the Canadian dollar was at par with the US dollar, you could find things much cheaper in the US than Canada. It's just the way it is.
