Yup, Malhotra being on the top line is even crazier. The Jackets have been really entertaining to watch this season, their youth is simply awesome.

If these guys had a legit centre (Gomez would thrive there, guaranteed) they would be legit.

Need to pepper Mason with shots. Overwelm their defense which is their weakest link.

Their offensive minded forwards are not as defensive so if we keep the puck in their zone we should be ok.

Two things from today's Columbus Dispatch that I wanted to share...

BEAST VS. THE EAST

The word is out on Blue Jackets goaltender Steve Mason, even among Eastern Conference clubs, whom the Jackets rarely face. Mason is 6-0 with a 0.66 goal-against average, .976 save percentage and four shutouts against Eastern teams, including two shutouts vs. Washington.

Player to watch: R.J. Umberger. He has feasted on his old foes in the Eastern Conference, scoring seven goals in nine games vs. the East.

This should be a good game. Looking at the stats, the CBJ are right behind the Devils for 5/5 play. Jackets just need to stay out of the box tonight.

Check here: http://blog.dispatch.com/cbj/ for the latest Jackets' news. The paper still had Nash and Murray as questionable for tonight. They may change that after the morning skate.

Someone was questioning the Filatov / Peca combo. They, along with Voracek contributed for Filatov's hat trick versus the Caps. That line clicked very well versus the Caps, but didn't look so hot on Tuesday versus Colorado. Hitch was really shuffling things on Tuesday.

Individually, the defense may look weak. But, I think the whole is greater than the sum of its parts in this case. The offense has been very inconsistent this season.

Malhotra on the first line does look odd, but he wins the faceoffs, plays defensively and basically provides the puck for Nash and Huselius to do their thing. It works. Is it ideal? No. But, it works.

^ More specifically...

It turns out Blue Jackets rookie goaltender Steve Mason was a big Martin Brodeur fan as a kid. The 20-year-old native of Oakville, Ontario owned a Brodeur jersey and had his room painted in Devils' colors.

"Growing up, my favorite teams was the Devils because of him," Mason said this morning.

So, it would have been big for Mason to play against Brodeur tonight if he weren't back in New Jersey recovering from a torn left biceps tendon.

"He was my idol growing up," Mason said. "That would have been pretty cool to play against him, but, with his surgery, that's not going to happen."

Mason, who leads the NHL with six shutouts, a 1.80 goals-against average and .936 save percentage, said he tried to copy Brodeur's style.

"The most important thing I took from him was his stickhandling," he said.

Wilson was picked up to help our awful, awful power play (although it has been getting better).

Do you think the game will sellout for you guys tonight? We do a crowd prediction thread here and im considering doing a road edition.

A few things going on with this...
1. crowds increase in Columbus when the OSU football season is over

2. crowds increase when the team in winning (duh)

3. this game was one of those included in special ticket packages

4. there was a very large crowd on Tuesday (for a Tuesday) but I think a lot of that might have been because people were anticipating the "return of Foote" which didn't happen since he was injured.

5. The Jackets report actual butts in seats, not tickets sold

6. Eastern conference teams draw pretty well

My guess - not a sellout, but over 16,500. Max is 18,363 (or something close to that).

The question for me is more of one that we're not going to be able to answer in one night. The reason Brodeur is so great is consistency, not over a season, but over a career. Year in, year out, playing 70+ games a season, and this season is the first he loses significant time to injury.

Mason is a great goaltender right now. Can he sustain the level he's currently at? Maybe for the rest of the season, but almost certainly not over the course of his career. How far he will fall, though, is another question entirely - I don't see his game just collapsing a la Raycroft.

The strongest aspect to Brodeur's game is the mental aspect.

Should be good. The Devils will have to get to Mason early, just pressure, pressure, pressure and try to grab a lead. I wish Shanny was playing, but soon enough I suppose. Looking forward to Weekes, I'm pretty confident that he can have another big night and play well.

Recordable media are more expensive in Canada because there is a special tax on them to support the Canadian music industry. It started with tapes because people would use them to record music off the radio for free instead of buying the album. It continued with recordable CDs and now is on DVDs. I guess it might also support the Canadian television and film industries but I'm not sure about that.

I'm interested in seeing if he really is awesome or if this has been a bit of a fluke.

If you look at it logically, NO ONE is as good as his statistics are, so clearly some of it has to be an anomaly.
It certainly helps to play under Hitchcock's system. Compare Leclaire's stats the last couple of years. His GAA shrunk from 2.97 to 2.25 and collected 9 shutouts last season. Not sure why he's had so much trouble this season though.

thats just silly. Nobody cares about the music industry.

Not in the US. But in Canada, where we fear losing our culture to the big bad gorillas to the south, they do care. Music, television and film are all protected as cultural industries and subsidized to ensure that the culture remains strong and vibrant.

That's the reason we tax our recordable media.

Add on top of that the fact that most products are initially priced by the manufacturer in US dollars and then converted to Canadian and given an additional profit buffer, everything in Canada generally costs more.

Even when the Canadian dollar was at par with the US dollar, you could find things much cheaper in the US than Canada. It's just the way it is.

I thought I heard him say Zdeno Zubrus. Plus, he pronounced Marty's name as Mart-in Brodeur.

These CBJ announcers are clueless. :shakehead
I felt like I was listening to a telegram. He started five sentences in a row with "Here."

Geez Pandolfo you don't back pass and then sprint across the blueline. Know where you are on the ice.

I thought Marty hurt his arm not his head.

Why is he wearing a blue jersey and the glove on the wrong hand!

Devils have really been absent so far, not that the Jackets have been much better, but they have to pick it up.
