I love Bauer helmets. The new ones are just sick too. Andy Greene has been wearing one this season and it's pretty much the only reason I don't hate him anymore.

yea like i said before, N/B are my second favorite helmet (they make awesome skates too, patty wears the one95s), but i prefer teh one stevens is wearing to the new one

Haven't worked my way down to the gloves yet. That helmet is just so damn sexy. I need to find a way to make wearing it a fashion statement so I can rock it every where I go and not give off the impression that I have the downs.

Well let's see, I've never used Warrior gloves but every Bauer pair I've had has been awesome. I used to wear Mission skates, but I forgot them in my mom's car once so I borrowed a friends Bauers. It was truly a spiritual experience...I've been buying Bauers ever since. Oh, and Sherwood wooden sticks kick ass. They're light and they can take a beating.

yea i have an old pair of supreme 3000, they are heavy and old but not bad. i have a pair of XXXX but they are too small. they are really really really nice. they were a guy on teh binghamton senators. he put custom tuuks and drilled holes at the bottoms of the boot to drain the sweat. they are really nice. i also have a warior that was one of the boston bruins. its a a one piece and is the lightest thing i have ever felt. the 8k helmet i have is also from the bruins

it wont be that big of a deal. they will still make teh bauer equipment. nike equipment by it self sucked, it was only good when they joined bauer. my guess is that they will have less new technology coming out because nike has alot of money and wont be funding them anymore. all of the n/b equipment was just bauer equipment with nikes name

Hahaha. Back when I was in HS, we were crushing this team like 7-0 in the first period and there was a 10 goal mercy rule. I hadn't scored a goal all season so our coach said that no one was allowed to score until I did. I have zero offensive skills, so one of my teammates literally tackled the goalie, allowing me to fire the puck into the empty net. I felt bad for the goalie. He got lit up all night and then got tackled so that the one ****** who couldn't get anything by him all night could net one.

Easton Stealth Grip stick
Mission Fly Amp Skates (need new ones)
CCM Supra Pants
Jofa shinpads
Easton elbow pads
Bauer Supreme Pro Gloves
No shoulder pads because I'm just that tough. (and play mens league no check)
Das Uber 01-12-2009, 11:45 PM I was going to buy a set of Bauer Vapor X leg pads for like $90 because it's such a pain in the ass to find a goalie when I play pickup roller games in the summer. Has anyone ever used those?
EO1981 01-12-2009, 11:56 PM I used Sherwood wooden sticks for roller hockey. Coffey curves ftw.

I loved the Coffey curve. I have no idea how that was legal, but it was incredible.
Darius Dangleaitis 01-13-2009, 01:48 AM I was #7 for High Point from 04-05 to 05-06. My junior year was the program's first year. When I was a senior we weren't that bad...about .500 and missed states by a game or two. We played mostly Northern White teams and a couple of Northern Red and Northern Blue teams.
I miss high school hockey so much. Talking ****, hitting people legally, etc. That's why I'm hopefully gonna play club for UNH next year.
Muttley 01-13-2009, 01:46 PM I like Easton sticks too. I have a stealth with a Gaborik curve.

I wanted to like them, but for some reason I've had nothing but problems (and some bad luck) with I tried Easton. From the Synthesis shaft right through to when I tried the Synergy, they didn't seem durable at all.

Those might be my next. I have Vector Pro's now that I love so much. They were considered a flash in the pan competitor to Vapors, but it's the best pair of skates that I've ever owned and am dreading the day when I need to replace them. I've stuck with CCM from their Tacks right through as they have morphed into their Vector series.

Just got the one90 for $100 off hockey monkey 87 flex Lindross curve(since they didn't have any malkin's left), and i have 2 one70s 87 flex with Malkin curve although one is about to break.
I'm looking for new gloves probably going to get Bauer one30s since they are in my price range at the moment.
I'm a bauer junkie besides my vector 4.0 skates but that's only because i found them to be very comfortable.

kyle evs48 01-13-2009, 03:39 PM Schick? Yeah he plays men's league right? He's a dumbass I don't like him.
Seconded.
yakitate304 01-13-2009, 04:09 PM I use one of the Bauer helmets shown in the first post (at least I think they're the same ones). I also have an older CCM one that I wear once in a while, which is also good.
For skates, I go with CCM Tacks, either 1052 Customs, or 652's. I've gotten a few free pairs of skates over the years from team sponsors and backers, namely a few pairs of new (at the time) Vapors, but I've always gone back to my Tacks no matter what. I just love how they feel. I've had them for years and they never let me down.
For sticks, well, I have a ********. To name a few... Z-Bubble (Grip, Sakic), Ultra Lite (Grip, Shanahan), Mission M-1 (Boyes), two Synergy's (one grip, one regular, both Shanahan), and a few random Sherwood and Nike wooden sticks that I like to use, especially in chippy games. I'd say that the M-1 is my absolute favorite, I love the way it feels. That's one of the few one piece sticks I've ever really liked. I'm not a fan of the Synergy's but I got them for free, so whatevs. My least favorite stick of all is a TPS Response.
Gloves, either an old pair of Eagle's, or CCM Tacks (I forget the number)...
As for a "career", I played on various AAA teams when I was young, played for my high school from 8th til 10th grade (and into 11th), tied and broke my school's scoring record in 9th and 10th grade, wasn't sure if I was going to go the juniors route or the college route (I really wanted to be a BC Eagle), then had a big falling out with a new coach who would ***** at me for "not getting involved" when I would set my linemates up, and ***** at me for "trying to do it all myself" when I would take more than 3 or 4 shots in a period. A series of ridiculous events culminated in my stupidly leaving the team (the last straw came in a game where we were winning 5-1 in the third [I was on a 2g,2a night], I blocked a shot from the point and it hit me square in the throat, I got up, cleared the puck, went to the bench and told my coach I needed a few shifts off, and that I had gotten hit in the throat... He responded by benching me for the rest of the game and then the next two games on the basis of "not being there for the team"). I basically got fed up with hockey for about a year, started boxing and doing mixed martial arts more seriously, so I didn't end up going to a hockey college or juniors, which I regret a bit now. On the plus side, it was in 11th grade that I got into a relationship, which probably would've had to end if I went to play juniors, but instead I finished up high school and now 5 years later we're still together, so that's a good trade-off.

you can but them like that. i did, its an Eddy. its real nice though. i couldnt use the cat eye mask in highschool. almost all leagues dont allow cat eyes until like the pros. ncaa doesnt nor juniors and usa hockey obviously wont. i had heaton helite pads too like marty had, and the ccm vector stick he used for about a year, the year after teh lockout

shylock39 01-13-2009, 06:04 PM My first post on this forum. I'm a goalie for about 26 years now and I hate the new line of equipment they have been putting out the past few years. I was lucky enough to come across my gear I'm wearing now.My set is Mr Martin Brodeurs early 2007-2008 CCM Vectors. These pads were his before the switch to RBK and had very little wear on them. Thank goodness I got these cuz now I can just these duplicated now in the future when I need new pads. Here some pics

The stick is okay, I've never really had a stick jump out at me as being super awesome. I think the blade pattern is waaaaay more important than the shaft. I also don't get a chance to try out too many shafts so when I broke my Synergy II I just went into the shop and gave the XXXX a try.

Good for me I got these. Marty hasn't changed his style of gear for the past 14 years. You can get Heaton pads still brand new. Sad news is tho Brian Heaton passed away 2 months ago. http://www.brianheatongoalie.com/?p=home I believe his partners and son is still running the company. But you can get yourself some nice Heaton 10 remakes for a good price. Give them a call they'll do what ever you want and are in my mind as well as the rest of the goalie community, the best company service you can find.
I was trying to convince him to do a line of Brodeur spec gear. But never got back to him on it. I had seen that s sports collector had a pair of Martys game used pads for sale for 30k bucks.

I just browsed through some forums and crap to see what the differences were. Apparently it's speed (Vapor) vs. power (Supreme). The Supreme is designed to get you more power per stride, but the vapor allows you to get more strides meaning better acceleration. I can't imagine a skate making that much of a difference, but I guess the Supremes suit me since speed and agility aren't part of my game.

Sounds like we both have the same issues. I went from Wood to Aluminum to Fiberglass/Composite to 1 piece composite and have found along the way I no longer like the ultra stiff flex ratings (100+) The final straw was the Z Bubble 110 flex... that thing felt like a rock when I shot (but great for clearing the crease and slashing ankles).
I now find myself longing again for the flex of wood sticks - which to me feels about like a 75-85 flex rating in today's composites. Thus my Easton Stealth 85 flex is my favorite.
It's much like a golf club rating - the faster your shot - the higher the stiffness you should get and as I have long given up the big slapper for a more surgical strike approach with a snap shot or wrister, I have backed down from the 100+ to the 85 flex ratings.
Man what I wouldn't give to find a stash of Koho wooden sticks...

I used to have the big bulky ones, but they are not needed in non check leagues. plus i felt too restricted. Even the sherwood traditional/small ones restrict you. so I usually gauge how physical the games are then decide whether i take my shoulder pads off in the third, or keep them on. You wouldn't believe how much more air you can breathe, and how much easier it is to move. Just gives you a little extra in the third. It is normal to see guys play the whole game w/out shoulder pads though. Just hope to hell some bruiser doesnt decide to be a jackass.

RG, in case you're curious, I ended up getting a Bouchard curve (Sherwood 5030 woodie), and so far I like it a lot better than the Crosby. In the chart you sent me it's listed as a deep curve, but I'd say it's a slight to moderate curve. Probably a bit less curved than the Crosby, and a lower lie.

The Bouchard curve is great. I agree that it's more of a shallow curve, I used to use that one exclusively after I decided to go away from the Coffey (it's just too much curve and the downside of no backhand outweighs the shot advantage).
When I switched to the Bouchard curve there was a pretty good adjustment period but once I got used to it, it was totally worth it. Since I switched to a Recchi (when I wanted to get a tapered blade and Sherwood ones were super hard to find) I haven't had as much success because I used to pull everything to the backhand on the Bouchard and roof it with ease. Now it's a good deal tougher.
The Bouchard curve really is great if you want a well rounded game. It's easy to catch and make passes, shoot backhand and forehand, and stickhandle to the backhand and the forehand. I really should think about switching back.

Yeah, so far I like it a lot, for passing at least - my shot is horrible but I think that's an operator problem, not a stick problem. I went to sticktime last night and was trying to work on getting my shot off the ice but it was a real struggle, I can only do it about 5% of the time and even then it's only a few inches. And I now have a blister on my thumb. But I guess that's something I just have to keep working on.
But I'm already contemplating a new stick - I like the lie and the curve, but it's an 85 flex and I can barely flex the thing. Do they even make senior sticks in a lower flex, or am I going to need to find an intermediate?

I just checked on HockeyGiant.com and they offer the Bauer XXXX in a 77 flex and an Easton shaft in a 70, both senior sticks. They're both expensive but that probably means you can find a cheaper one in a lesser flex too with some looking.
britdevil 01-19-2009, 09:27 AM I wish hockey was a serious sport in my hometown. We don't have a rink within absolute miles, there's about 5 roller clubs with very few player openings and buying equipment is almost impossible.
My gear is so haggard, really old gloves (holes in the palm, nice) and my hockey pants are abysmal. I use stupidly cheap frontier wooden sticks with an almost flat curve, I can't stand composites and carbon fibre stuff. I just tend to break the head it seems...
I look a tramp when I am playing, but I wouldn't change my gear for the world.

Brit, I normally go to the local hockey shop, but if you are stuck or if you need Equipment, Check out www.hockeygiant.com they usually have pretty good deals, some too good to pass up. The clearance deals are great. Not sure if they ship overseas, but you can ask. Plus they have sick prices on jerseys. Just bought a Hedjuk and Smith one for 19.99 a pop. Should be in today....
Also, The Rink has a thread for manufacturers and Shops

I can easily transition back to any other pair without them, if and when I replace my current skates.
I buy skates once in a blue moon. I hate having to break them in. I got the 652's on sale at Sports Section in Verona (sweet shop BTW) about three years ago. the pair before that was my old HS ones 152 tack that i used for about 10 years. If they are comfy, no reason to change. When i broke my ankle i was seriously looking to buy larger skates since i use a brace inside, but i just sucked it up till i got used to it. Those things arent Cheap.

I'm not spending anywhere near that kind of money (either the one95 or XXXX). I'm still very much a beginner, so there's no point in spending major money on a stick.

Oh man, my Vectors were so hard to get used too. I had never worn anything that had fit so perfectly up until that first moment I put them on the day after they were baked. It was a Super Bowl Sunday 2006 and there was an all day public skate at Ice Vault in Wayne. I skated for like 3 hours and just knew these skates would rejuvenate me and realized these were the best pair of skates that I have ever owned. I spent just under $400 for them, but it was well worth the investment. I will always buy top of the line skate from now on.
P.S. I got my current Vectors at Sports Section. Before that, I got my 2 previous pairs of Tacks at Gerry Cosby's in Manhattan.

I played in Vernon before they had a HS team. We used to play Exhibition games vs teams in Morris Cty. Played against Parsippany, Morris Knolls, Randolph and all that. Since the HS did not want anything to do with the Team or Insurance, we were on our own. But it turned into a HS program a few years after i left. We were pretty good too. We beat a bunch of them, but thats mainly cause we were pond hockey kids and practiced nearly all day on the lakes. This was before Skylands, so we had practice at Mennen after midnight on the weekends.
After that I was in Rochester NY for School, and those kids can play up there. When I moved back I played at Ice vault though for Moller Mechanical or something. You play mens there? My brother is still playing there.
As for the skates, I realize the diference between the more expensive skates, even from the 152's tos the 652's and figured i'd go middle road, then my next pair i will expand more. It just sucks now since my ankle will never be the same. Nothing will be totally comfortable.

I've seen Vernon playing at Ice Vault. I remember talking with one of the parents of a kid on the team and they were upset that Skylands would be closing (this was when the original owners went bankrupt and it closed) and would have to drive all the way to Wayne for games and practices.
Yeah, the only rink I had growing up in the area that I lived was Ice World in Totowa (where the Devils practiced before South Mountain). The other rinks like Mennen, South Mountain and Sportorama were too far away. I was already in my late 20's when hockey became trendy and they started building rinks all over NJ.
The town I grew up now has HS hockey at both of it's HS's and a rink in town too. I guess I was born too early ;)
P.S. I have been playing adult league at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan since 1999. I played in a short-season summer checking league at Ice Vault in 2005. I knew the captain and they needed a defenseman. At the time I was playing on 2 different teams and open hockey at least once a week.
It's tough when you have a family, but I still make it on the ice at least once or twice per week.

I live 3 blocks away from ice vault. Too bad it didn't open until I was in my twenties. I would have loved to play ice hockey as a kid.

Probably not. We actually have two goalies, one played the first and we were down 8-0 after that period (he's not too good) and the other played the second two periods. Though to be fair to the first goalie, in the first period we looked absolutely horrific and I think the other team might have let up after awhile.

Oh we stop a drill if they miss a ton of passes in a row or are just going through the motions... My new favorite end of practice skating drill is net relays. Get them in 2 groups on the goal line - push the net to the far end of the ice, around the faceoff dot and back down. Go through the line 2x and watch them drop.

Richer's Ghost 01-27-2009, 03:26 PM Thank god your not my hockey coach RG.
We have roughly 6,000 undergrads to pull together a hockey team - whereas our opponents typically have 20-30,000 students to pull from. We are lucky if our 2nd line is as good as their 4th line so we have to be fast and conditioned to play all 60 minutes with speed on the puck. Skill won't beat speed if they can't get the puck and don't have time to handle it.
So while it sucks for them at practice, this plays out well during games. We just hung with UK (enrollment 32,000) who are much more talented but we outskated them the entire game and were holding them scoreless in the 3rd (1-0 with a SHG) and if it hadn't been for a bad 5 minute spell where we got sloppy with not having our 3rd man high to help backcheck, we would have won (2-3 final score).
Another favorite drill (as I coach the D); "quick feet drill"
- forward in the corner; defense at center ice
- 2 cones (orange dots); 1 at faceoff dot and 1 at winger location at center faceoff circle
- 1 defender (D)takes position at the faceoff dot just outside the blue line on his knees; attacker takes position at faceoff hashmark (F) near corner.
- on whistle; attacker races with puck up boards full speed to beat defender. Defender jumps up from knee position; executes 1 forward step then crosses over to the outside of the cone while facing forward to skates backwards and complete S motion cutting inside center faceoff circle cone (winger position at center ice) then taking position on the attacker for a 1 on 1 from that point in on goal.
Diagram:
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s93/vagel117/quickfeet.jpg
-This drill is run in both directions at same time
* for extra difficulty make the defenders turn their sticks over
crashlanding 01-27-2009, 06:00 PM Another favorite drill (as I coach the D); "quick feet drill"
I've seen the high school JV coach do a similar drill, the only difference is that instead of the cones and doing the S thing, the defensemen start on the red line on the opposite side of the circle. Then they skate backwards around the circle and play defense on the onrushing forward. A lot easier, but that's high school JV instead of college.
edit: Honestly, I loved doing sprints in soccer practice. Our coach used to make us do 440's (10x back and forth across the 18) until we dropped. I've never been as fast or in as good of shape as I was after the season. I wish I could rope 5 or 6 other guys into doing it. It just isn't the same when you're by yourself, you need others to push you.

Beer League, Adult League, House League, etc. It's the culmination of one's hockey career if they don't make it in the pro's.
After junior hockey, High School and College hockey, if you're not playing at the professional or semi-professional level, this is the only organized hockey you will be involved in for the rest of your life.

We only had 12 skaters tonight, so we played with 5 defense and 7 forwards, and for the forwards we just rotated through as people came off the ice. And so halfway through the shift he'd just be gliding around out there, barely moving and being completely ineffective. 12 skaters is a good number but you have to go with 4 defense, 6 wingers, and 2 centers. It's much easier to play defense if you know what side you're going to be on and who you're playing with. The same goes for the forward combinations. Put your best two forwards at center and try to balance the skill level on the wings. Heck, I'd put out 9 forwards and 3 defense before that since having a strong defense can make up for a lot in more beginner leagues.
It is much easier to conserve your energy when playing defense too since it's more positional.

That would have been better, but those were the positions people wanted to play.
The forward line changes were also consistently screwed up all night, probably because certain players decided just to sit down on the bench wherever, not at the end of the line, but then assumed the guys they had just sat in front of were still going to go out ahead of them. Almost every faceoff we would be missing a forward because someone had screwed up or wasn't paying attention. By the end I was wishing the ref would just drop the puck and not wait, maybe they would have gotten the message after awhile.
