Hockeynomad 01-06-2009, 10:15 PM Canada wins again, despite a number of junior aged players not released by their NHL team. I'm sure that was the case for other nations.
But who were those players? I know Steve Stamkos was one.
In fact which were the Swedish and Russian juniors unable to play as well?
I remember the 2003 World Juniors where the Canucks were edged by the Russians but the TC side could have used names like Danny Heatley, Rick Nash, Jay Bowmeister and Nathan Horton.

Stamkos, Schenn, Gagner, Doughty, ... uh, and, uh ... I think they said there were 8 eligible juniors who were playing in the NHL?

Hockeynomad 01-07-2009, 11:33 AM What about the Russians and the Swedes, and even the Americans?
FrankMTL 01-07-2009, 11:43 AM What about the Russians and the Swedes, and even the Americans?
Americans were missing Bogosian, but he was hurt anyways.
Swedes were not missing anybody because they got Moller back from the Kings.
Russians were not missing anybody either as they got Filatov back from the Blue Jackets.
Switzerland was missing Sbiza, but they were relegated last year and will be back in the top group next year as they won their group.
Denmark was missing Boedker..
I don't know who else was eligible...
Seachd 01-07-2009, 11:51 AM Czechs were missing Voracek.

I hate to bring this up, and it's definitely not the same deal, but that Russian team would have been quite a bit more potent if not for the Cherepanov tragedy, no?

Would his KHL team have released him? Or maybe they would have done the same as what all nhl teams did with our Canadian juniors. I have no idea how it works over there though..

I'm assuming so. Aren't international competitions generally held in much higher regard in Europe? I think a bunch of guys that played on the team are on KHL teams anyway, right? Goncharov, Chudinov, Klopov, Petrov, etc.
God Bless Canada 01-07-2009, 12:43 PM We knew we wouldn't have Gagner. We were almost sure we wouldn't have Turris, Doughty or Stamkos. And I wasn't shocked when Sutter was able to crack the Hurricanes.
But I did expect to have Schenn, Bailey and Gillies on the team this year. To a certain extent, I think we missed those three guys more than we missed Turris, Stamkos and Gagner. This team didn't have problems scoring. But it did have problems in its own zone. Bailey and Gillies would have been two-thirds of an excellent defensive line (along with Cormier) and Schenn would have been the shut-down defensive defenceman that Canada was lacking.

I don't know. I don't think it would have made a difference in the end result anyway :yo:

Difference between Gold and Bronze IMO...

He was a good player, but not THAT good.
I realize the Russians were 5 seconds away from the gold medal game without him, but who knows what way that game would have played out with a different lineup.
But there is no way anybody can say that the only reason the russians lost is because he wasn't there. Thats like Canadians saying the only reason the game wasn't a walk in the park for us is because of our 8 nhl'ers that weren't released. Who knows, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter.

Could easily have scored another goal for Russia putting the win out of reach in the semi-finals.
TheCH 01-07-2009, 12:56 PM Could easily have scored another goal for Russia putting the win out of reach in the semi-finals.
But with him in the lineup, thats a COMPLETELY different game.
HispA 01-07-2009, 12:58 PM Could easily have scored another goal for Russia putting the win out of reach in the semi-finals.
...or he could have scored against Sweden in his first shift of the game then made that a completely different game. Russia win it than get Slovakia in the semi's.
...or he wouldnt have..
No one knows. And no one will ever.

Agreed. But I think we all can agree that it would have been nice to have had him there. RIP Cherry.

Exactly. I was just meant it's wrong to say it wouldn't have made a difference, because it could have.
mattawesome 01-07-2009, 01:20 PM They were still dominate with out those 8 guys, goaltending was suspect at times. but still had a good enough team to pull through it.

So with these dudes could the team have been much stronger?
I know in late 80s this was the predicament when playing against the CCCP junior powerhouses.

There were reports that Erik Johnson tried to do that with St.Louis and they said no.
