NHL comparisons for WJC players...

Just for fun, not saying they will be that guy, but whose game do they remind you of. To start:

Ryan Ellis - Mark Streit. Undersized, but is smart and absolutely dominant on the PP.

PK Subban - Mike Green. Skating and offensive skills combined with a gamblers confidence.

John Tavares - Brett Hull

Cody Hodgson - Ron Francis

hogtownhabsfan
01-06-2009, 02:24 AM
John Tavares - Vinny Lecavalier. Strength on the puck, tremendous skill, and a goal scorers flair.

Angelo Esposito - Alex Kovalev. Skills and speed and dangerous in any situation, but doesn't have it all together all the time.

Whoever thought of the Ron Francis comparison (I first heard it from Don Taylor on the radio last week) for Hodgson is bang on. He lacks the grit/fighting of Mike Richards (not to say he isn't tough, but they aren't that similar besides size and two-way play).

Tavares reminds me of Heatley. Buries goals from everywhere, sometimes goes a bit invisible but always shows up somehow in the end. Tavares may even be a bit more explosive.

Eberle looks like Steve Sullivan out there the way he can handle and shoot the puck at high speed.

Ryan Ellis looks exactly like Drew Doughty to me, and they both remind me of Mike Green.

Angelo Esposito - Alex Kovalev. Skills and speed and dangerous in any situation, but doesn't have it all together all the time.

Well they're both highly talentend, inconsistent, underrated workers. Power play machines and can play on the PK too. 5-on-5 will show flashes of skills, but will rarely result into goals. They can both take over games when they get hot, but their style of play is really different.

Kovalev dominates along the boards with his strenght and often walks through entire defenses with his stickhandling. Esposito uses his speed and vision to create scoring chances.

I like the Patrick Marleau comparison myself.

Hodgson is tough. He kind of reminds me of Yzerman.

I'd say more like Chris Drury.

Hedman really didn't impress me. I'd say Hal Gill.

Hedman will be wayyyyyyyy better offensively than Gill. Have you watched Sweden at all in this tourney? He'll need work defensively, but once he hits his prime, he'll be pretty close to Pronger. Plus, he wasn't even 100% the whole tournament.

Yeah, JT reminds me of Jason Spezza, except he has defensive lapses.

Angelo Esposito - Alex Kovalev. Skills and speed and dangerous in any situation, but doesn't have it all together all the time.

I don't see the skill in Esposito at a high level, and certainly not Kovalev-like.

I'd say, during the tournament he was more reminiscent of Daniel Cleary, which could apply to more than just playing style.

Whether he continues that brand of play in the Q and into the Pros is another question though.

Hedman really didn't impress me. I'd say Hal Gill.

Hockey is the game with the sticks, a puck and is played on ice, by the way.

And, to add my own, I thought Magnus Paarjavi was a crazy mix of Gaborik's speed and Forsberg's puck control. That kid is going to be good.

For me, Esposito is the toughest player to peg. If you had asked me before the tournament, I probably would have agreed with the Kovalev comparison, but I'm not sure now. He was a much more complete player than I was expecting. He has the offensive talent to be a solid second liner in the NHL, and he also brings the defensive awareness to kill penalties and be on the ice late in a game. I think the Patrick Marleau comparison is a fairly good one.

Eberle can't be Hemsky because nobody needs to tell Eberle to shoot:laugh:...and Eberle tends to just make the simple play. We've seen that he's capable of doing a quick dangle but that's not really part of his game. Hemsky on the other hand dangles every chance he gets. Eberle isn't flashy at all.

Ennis kind of reminded me of Hemsky because definitely likes to dangle.

I was really impressed with Wilson, he's going to be a real good player for you guys. His poise and intelligence at both ends of the ice remind me of Ron Francis, while his strength could rival a guy like Brind'Amour, so I'd say some sort of combination of those two. Maybe someone could find a player who fits that mold, but that's just what I saw from him.

This seems to be a common misconception around here. Stylistic comparisons are not equal to career projections. Just because Player X skates and plays like Player Y does not mean he will have similar career numbers. That would be called plain guessing.
