I was wonder since there is a rumoured deal involving Russel to the Sens, what do you guys think we would need to give up to get him?

is he a top 4 defender? top 2? or just a top6?

can you guys also give me info on how he has played and his strengths and weaknesses!

Thanks!

Vermette.

No way. And I'm a huge Vermette fan.

He's undersized but very skilled. His potential is Brian Rafalski. The question is will his size limit his potential. He's smart and always in the proper position.

He's currently playing on our bottom pair and on our top PP unit. He has top 4 potential especially in the Eastern Conference.

The question to me still remains if he can be an effective defenseman in Hitchcock's style... He can skate and pass better than about 95 percent of the team already, but Hitchcock likes the big bodied, able to dominate along the boards defenseman, Russell isn't exactly that. But he's the closest thing we have to a possible PP QB at this point.

I think him straight up for Vermette isn't a great deal for the jackets, not when he's finally getting consistent playing time.

I wouldn't trade Russell at this point. It's easy to get caught up in win now, but I think the potential of our current batch of kids is scary and I don't want to break them up. Mayorov is about the only one I'd deal.

I just have a bad feeling we'll end up regretting it.

Then we may as well hang on to Mayorov, because we won't get much for just him.

Russell isn't untouchable imo.... But not straight up for Antoine.

I want Brian Lee... Make it happen Scottie.

I think Mayorov + our 1st could get us a nice piece.

Of course, if I was running the team, I'd just go get Doug Weight and see what happens from there. I think we can sneak into the playoffs doing that, at least contend all year. And then we take off next season.

The good thing about Mayorov is you could argue he's a first round talent.... And his speedy development and the fact that he stayed in camp as long as he did and they assigned him to Syracuse isn't of the Juniors says a lot....

I'd rather not trade him, we're due a great, lights out, late round draft pick, but he's certainly not untouchable either.

I see Mayorov as like a freebie prospect. Easy come, easy go. If he can get us something it's a bonus.

Think about it... Howson used a few draft picks to grab Mayorov. Now, Mayorov could be part of a deal that brings us a top 6 center or offensive d-man. That 07 draft day trade may turn out to be one of Howson's best moves so far.

Untouchables:
Brassard,Filatov, Mason, Voracek
Will take something pretty damn good:
Goloubef, Mayorov, Nash, Russell
Everyone Else

that's my standpoint on it all.

I made a couple of slight alterations to reflect my own position.

With all the rumours running that Ottawa will aquire Kris Russel does someone have any accurate scouting report on his scoring, defensive, and all around playing abilities. Any help would be great!!!

Off the top of my head and not having seen him much this year, I would sum him up as follows:

Great at controlling the speed of the play.
Sees the ice extremely well.
Very good skater.
Moves the puck well.
Good at distributing the puck on the PP.
Great heart and great character.
Good competitor despite size.

Needs to work on strength.
D zone has to improve (strength a factor there).
Gets worn down (injuries)

Fast, mobile skater. He can skate the puck out of trouble and either start the rush or skate the puck into the offensive zone on his own.

Good passer. Average shot. Won't be the defenseman taking shots on the PP, but he could QB it in the future if he had someone to pass to.

Good at getting players off the puck; relies more on body positioning than physicality to do it. Definitely won't be hitting everything in sight.

He's showing off a lot of his better qualities in tonight's game, if you're able to watch it.

Well I wouldnt start using words like "great" just yet.

He's in the mold of a Rafalski, only problem with that is Rafalski didnt come around until he was 28 or so. With his size, it will take time for him to refine his game enough to over come the size difference. But he just doesnt stack up to bigger players, and at his young age, must get by solely on skill, which will take some time.

If you get him, you'll be happy to see Vermette (and others?) go.

He's fast (for a defenceman) and a great passer. Likes to carry the puck into the offensive zone himself, skate around back of the net and look for the open man. If he wasn't good at passing this could be a problem, but.... ;)

Only real issue is his size/strength; he's supposedly 5-10 180 or so, but if that's true, I'm 7 feet and 800lbs. If he bulks up a little bit in the offseason, he'll be a force next year. I really don't want to see him go.

I wonder if Hitch would ever think of converting him to a forward where his size wouldn't be as much of a liability. He seems to possess the assets to make the move up. We tried it in Toronto with Ian White when we were log jammed at d and he did pretty well with I think 3 goals in 6 games up front and he's not nearly as offensively gifted as Russell. It's an added bonus to have if a defenceman goes down during a game because he can easily slide back. Which also happened this year with Toronto. Obviously, you need him on the point right now but I'm talking down the road. Could be an option. Sorry if this got a little off topic.

Ehh, I dunno; I've never really liked attempts to make guys change their position. I'm not sure if he's played forward before, but if he never tried it in juniors, I sure as hell wouldn't wanna start now.

For one thing, he'd have to get a whole new set of sticks ;) I swear he must have the longest stick on the team, or it just looks that way because he's smaller than everyone else. When you're a defenseman you need that reach, but as a forward, not so much.

EDIT: Insert wiener joke here.

Smaller, younger, version of Tomas Kaberle.

Skates like Phil Housley, sees the ice like Zubov, physical ability like Cami Granato. :sarcasm:

Jackets fans,
could you tell me where Russell is at in terms of NHL development? Will he be the PP qb people thought he could be?

Thx.

I'd start by directing you to one of the many Russell threads already existing on this board, at least one other one on page 1 ;)
