Short and simple. To one of the best men to ever wear the uniform. As his jersey is raised, raise your glasses to Captain Canuck.

I could try for Shakespeare, sure. If you don't like it, why didn't you make one? We're halfway through the big day and everyone's talking Sundin, so here's a spot to talk about the man. I apologize if it isn't aesthetically pleasing.

Whatever, there will be enough respects paid towards Linden from every other media source that people shouldn't have to go overboard making a GDT for Linden.

Besides, Linden is all class so if he posted on the HF Boards, I am sure he would like the simple approach to his own GDT. :D

If you want a massive intro to the game tonight go buy a Province and its massive 32 page pullout on Trev.

Hopefully the weather doesn't hurt the attendance. I'm sure it won't but with the early ceremony start I'm worried that perhaps people will show up late. Kills me that I couldn't get tickets.

Don't really care about the game quite frankly, just looking forward to the ceremony and honouring my favorite all time Canuck.

His is the only jersey I own and I'll probably never buy another one.

EDIT: I like the GDT, it's all about Linden tonight and that picture is iconic.

By the way ignoring all the Linden stuff, I expect this will be a great game. Oilers aren't gonna be too happy about being torn apart, eaten alive and then vomited out just to be eaten again by the Chicago Blackhawks. The Canucks are going to be pumped after the Linden ceremony and I'm sure a lot of them will want to make up for his last game (7-1 loss).

Just wish Louie was in net

My favourite Trevor Linden moment, aside from being there for his final game where the atmosphere was surreal, goes all the way back to 1994. Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals at the Pacific Colliseum. Jim Robson with the call: "We'll hope they can patch Linden up and get him in that one. He will play. You know he'll play. He'll play on crutches! He will play, and he'll play at Madison Square Gardens on Tuesday night. The game is over!"

Just remembering, word for word, Robson calling that at the end still brings tears to my eyes. Trevor Linden was the epitomy of leadership in a Vancouver Canucks uniform. He will forever be Captain Canuck.

THe ceremony won't be that long, only about 45 minutes to an hour, the extra half an hour is to let the players have warm up, then go right into the game, rather than having them warm up, and then sit on the bench for an hour.

Makes sense.

To me, it's THE picture to define Linden. Picture is worth 1000 words, so...

I was amazed to read Cliff Ronning's memories of 94 on CDC this week. Can't believe Linden played in that SCF with broken ribs and cartilage...just makes it all the more amazing.

The Canucks better beat up the Oilers in tribute to Linden. It's not even about the points in tonights game, it's about showing respect for the man in the stands that gave his life to this organization.

Vancouver, B.C. – At a surprise outdoor ceremony earlier today, the Vancouver Canucks unveiled the newly named Gate 16 at General Motors Place in honour of Trevor Linden. Gate 16 is the main entrance and reception area for guests, staff and key stakeholders in the community of Canucks Sports & Entertainment.

Trevor Linden embodies the same qualities Canucks Sports & Entertainment strives to uphold: integrity, teamwork, passion, respect and excellence. Gate 16 was named in tribute to the iconic Canuck, to serve as a lasting reminder of his distinguished NHL career and reflect the objectives the franchise supports and operates by.

“The unveiling of Gate 16 provides an opportunity for everyone who enters General Motors Place to see the impact of Trevor’s legacy,” said Chris Zimmerman, President & CEO, Canucks Sports & Entertainment. “Gate 16 was named and designated as a symbol of Trevor’s character and a reminder of the principles this organization supports and upholds.”

Linden, his wife Cristina, father Lane, mother Edna and brothers Dean and Jamie all attended the unveiling of Gate 16 alongside Canucks staff, media and partners in the community. The ceremony was hosted by longtime Canucks broadcaster Tom Larscheid and attended by NHL Commissioner, Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner, Bill Daly. Linden’s sweater will be raised to the rafters in a pre-game retirement ceremony at General Motors Place tonight.

Gate 16: Gate 16 is located on the East side of General Motors Place on Abbott Street in Vancouver. It was formerly identified as Gate 5 before being renamed. The re-design of Gate 16 includes blue and white LED lighting of the number 16, accompanied by a plaque that details Linden’s career and legacy.

Retirement ceremony: Tonight’s retirement ceremony starts at 6 pm, Doors open at 5 pm. The ceremony will be broadcast in its entirety without interruption by Canucks TV on Rogers Sportsnet Pacific. Linden’s number 16 will hang from the rafters at General Motors Place with Stan Smyl’s number 12. The ceremony will feature a video tribute and several key note speeches from those close to Linden.
Go Canucks Go!

Trevor Linden has been the heart of the Vancouver Canucks since the day he was drafted. Not seeing him on the ice just seems wrong, but at least this time we don't have to watch him play in another uniform.

TREVOR THE ROOKIE

http://img.waffleimages.com/a78d04fda71e80228f54bd651a669a66798a57dd/draftedjpg

Linden was drafted second overall in 1988 by the Canucks. In both of his previous two seasons he had led his hometown Medicine Hat Tigers to Memorial Cup victories. Linden jumped straight into the NHL at age 18 and held his own. His first goal was against Kelly Hrudey, but he managed to score some against good goalies too. He was the first Canuck to make it to 30 goals in his rookie season, and the only rookie to ever win the Cyclone Taylor award as team MVP. Leech beat him out for the Calder by a hair, but I don't know if we can hold that against anyone.

Showing signs of what would come, Linden upped his game in the playoffs his rookie year and managed 7 points in the 7 game first round series against the Cup winning Flames.

Here he is scoring a tying goal in Game 6: CpT8wjJUe6U

"Just 19 years old, looking like he's played 19 playoff seasons"

TREVOR THE CAPTAIN
In his sophmore year, Linden had 51 points, but it didn't really get impressive until year three. After 1989-1990, Stan Syml retired. The Canucks replaced him as captain by rotating through three guys, Doug Lidster, Dan Quinn and Trevor Linden. Linden went on to score 33 goals and 37 assist for 70 points, earning himself a spot in the All Star Game. The following season, Linden was made sole Captain of the Canucks and was, at the time, the youngest Captain in league history as far as I know.

In his first season with Linden as Captain, the Canucks managed to win the division for the first time in 15 years. Then they did it again the next year. In those years they managed 13 and 12 games played in the playoffs despite not making it past the second round. Vancouver is famous for doing playoff rounds the difficult way. Linden averaged a point a game in the playoffs those years.

TREVOR DURING THE RUN TO THE FINALS

Now we're at 1993-1994. The team underachived a bit. After having won two division titles, they fell back in the standings. There was some trading, none of this has much to do with Trevor. His points fell during the regular season. He had managed three straight 70+ point seasons, but dropped to 61 in 93-94. He still managed to get his fourth straight 30+ goal season. Nobody cares what happened in that regular season though, because that year was the second time in Canucks history that they would make it to the Stanley Cup Finals.

It started with the Flames. It always seems to start with the Flames. If the Canucks and Flames play in the first round, it's probably going seven games and one of them is probably going to the finals. That's just the way it seems to go.

That entire playoff run was a team effort, but three guys did the heavy lifting. Bure scored like a madman, McLean was a rock and Linden was the heart.

The Canucks didn't start too well... by which I mean they managed to get themselves down 3-1 in a seven game series. Linden scored the OT goal in game six (see it here. It's video from the Canucks.com tribute. It manages to make it boring.) Bure scored the winner the next game to tie up the series.

The next two rounds tend to get skipped over. The Canucks beat the Stars and the Leafs in 5 games each.

Watch Linden tie it up in a game against the Leafs with 30 seconds left in the game. It's a long clip. The goal happens just after the 3 minute mark. If you watch the whole thing you get to see McLean being a badass and pokecheck a guy while he leaves for the extra attacker.

Lj1ib2VjknQ

TREVOR IN THE STANLEY CUP FINALS

We're skipping to game 5 of the Finals. The Canucks were down 3-1 in the series. They were playing in MSG with New York already celebrating. They had the victory parade scheduled (seriously). There's no special Linden story, but the game was hilarious. The Canucks went up 3-0, then the rangers came back to 3-3, then the Canucks won 6-3. There were 8 goals in 12:48.

Game 6 in Vancouver, Rangers up 3-2. This is unrelated to Linden, but people who haven't seen it before should watch two goals with no stoppage.

eHlQXbWdXpI

It was an exciting game, but the Canucks did a pretty good job of sealing game six up and not letting the Rangers back in. It's one of the best games in franchise history. The defining moment of the game though is in the last few seconds. It's probably Jim Robson's most memorable call, and it's when I really started disliking Mark Messier.

Watch out, the volume is loud

Ybk_V_c6LBw

"We'll hope they can patch Linden up and get him in that one. He will play. You know he'll play. He'll play on crutches! He will play, and he'll play at Madison Square Gardens on Tuesday night. The game is over!"

http://img.waffleimages.com/216cdac9fbdd5fda4d5f0b8502c30e17f03e2d65/lindenmclean.jpg

Game seven didn't turn out so hot for the Canucks and I normally cover my ears and go LALALALALA, but it was one of Linden's best games. The Rangers went up 2-0 early. Then, while on the penalty kill Linden scored to make it 2-1.

zi_HQtHP-m4

Messier scored on the powerplay near the end of the second to make it 3-1. Then Linden scored again. 3-2.

-ac40DRS-FM

There were some close calls after that, but Linden couldn't put a third one in (and neither could LaFayette. Ping.)

Linden gave that run everything he had. Take a look at this interview from the second intermission of game 7.

iZ-fnTXWYjo

He's thin as a rail, has a black eye, huge bags under his eyes, and looks like he's about to fall over.

12 goals, 13 assists for 25 points in 24 playoff games that year.

TREVOR THE HUMANITARIAN
1997 was also the year when Trevor was awarded the King Clancy Trophy for his community involvement.

-Been the Honorary Chair of the Canadian Cancer Society's Cops for Cancer bike tours
-Been a spokesperson for preventative cancer care for the Canadian Cancer Society
-Participated in seven billion golf and bike fundraising efforts
-Been involved with the BC Sports Celebrities Festival to raise money for the Special Olympics
-Created PSAs for the Children's Hospital
-Been involved in Skate for a Cure for pediatric cancer
-Been involved in the Terry Fox Family's Fundraiser
-Runs an annual golf tournament for Cancer
-Started the Trevor Linden foundation to raise money for, I believe, Cancer (Started in 1995, probably leading to the King Clancy)
-Given over $650,000 to the Canadian Cancer Society's Camp Goodtimes
-Worked with the Canucks for Kids Fund

Trevor also spends an idiotic amount of time at Ronald McDonald House of BC, the Children's Hospital and Canuck Place Children's Hospice. You could apparantly still find him hanging around Canuck Place visiting kids when he was in town while playing for other teams.

Is it wrong that I don't even care about the game or the outcome? After the ceremony, it'll just seem like such an after thought.

From what I've seen, most teams lose the game after a long ceremony. I have no idea what to expect from the Oilers after last night. Canucks fans complained about the Saturday game as one of the worst efforts of the year but at least our worst effort didn't result in a 9-2 humiliation on home ice.

I noticed that Canucks.com is showing the reitrement ceremony online (for Easterners like myself who can't watch this on S-PAC). Anyone wanna bet that the feed cuts out during the retirement ceremony? Anyone wanna bet the feed cuts out NUMEROUS times during the retirement ceremony?

Go Canucks. I say it's a fight-filled affair this evening, and "Huggy Bear" Stortini is ejected from the game at some point. 4 -1 Nucks tonight.

I shall be at home in my Linden jersey, choking back tears.

"I'm hoping to keep it together, that should be a challenge," Linden told reporters this morning at GM Place. "I'm hoping to have fun and obviously speaking to 18,000 people is not my forte. But I think it is going to be a fun night. I know how hard (the Canuck staff) have worked on putting this night together, so I think it is going to be a great night."

...

While the main ceremony won't begin until 6 p.m., the Canucks also honoured Linden this morning outside the main Abbot Street entrance to GM Place. That entrance, formerly Gate 5, has been renamed Gate 16 in honour of Linden.

Canucks president Chris Zimmerman unveiled the new gate and a plaque of Linden during a snowy, outdoor press conference attended by about 200 Linden friends, family members, colleagues and reporters, as well as NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and vice-president Bill Daly.

"It is an incredible honour and I was totally caught off guard," Linden said. "It's very special for sure. To have a place at GM Place in perpetuity is incredible. I'm somewhat shocked and overwhelmed and a bit speechless for sure."

Linden called tonight's jersey retirement a tremendous honour.

"Obviously, I'm not super-good with all the attention, but I can't begin to say what an honour it is. For a player, it is extremely special. It is one of the most special moments in sports. And now this morning, which was a complete surprise. It's really an amazing day."

...

Bettman praised Linden at his own news conference which followed Linden's.

"He is one of the finest people I have ever dealt with," Bettman said of Linden. "Yes, he was a great player and we've all talked about that. Off the ice, he has been the consummate role model and giver of himself in the community. And that's one of the reasons he has been so popular here in Vancouver."

Canucks shutout loss to the Oilers still raw in their memory.

Trevor linden night.

I'll be outside collecting for The Salvation Army (hint hint, drop in those twoonies after the game!)

Should be an awesome game! Canucks win, Linden tears up, as does everyone in the crowd and everyone watching at home, game goes to a shootout, Linden contracted just for the shootout and wins it with a top shelf laser, then Sundin comes in on a rocket pack, honours Linden then commits to the Canucks for the year.

Could happen.

I'm far from a Bettman supporter but it's pretty cool that he deemed this important enough to show up for especially since he and Linden have been on opposite sides of the NHL/NHLPA for a long time.

We all know there will probably be a lot of former Canucks there tonight especially the ones who are still prominent in the community (Linden, Courtnall, Ronning, etc). Who else do you think will be there?

Will we get a Gino Odjick sighting? Sergio Momesso? Greg Adams? Gerarld Diduck?

I was thinking Messier & Keenan could come out to the old wrestling entrance music of "The Outsiders". Messier would be dressed up as Razor Ramone - flick a toothpick in Linden's face - grab his jersey and put it on. Then he would yell to the crowd "I am the Bad Guy"!

I think from here on people wanting to make a GDT should have to put up a $50 deposit. Then, at the end of the game, it should be a changed to a poll and people can vote on whether the GDT was a success. If so, the deposit is refunded to the OP. If not, the money is donated to a Dion Phaneuf forehead reduction fund.

THe ceremony won't be that long, only about 45 minutes to an hour, the extra half an hour is to let the players have warm up, then go right into the game, rather than having them warm up, and then sit on the bench for an hour.

Makes sense.

A 1 hour ceremony does seem to be pretty long. But whatever, Linden meant a lot to your franchise, he deserves it.

As I said before, I could try and write some Shakespearean-esque essay to try and sum up what Trevor Linden meant to this team and this city and to myself as a hockey fan, and I could post a glut of images and videos in his honor...but really, it's going to happen all throughout the thread. Also, here's the article about Linden's injuries in '94:

"You don't know this, but Trevor Linden had cracked ribs and torn rib cartilage for the last four games of the 1994 Stanley Cup Final," Cliff Ronning said. "You can't imagine what it's like to hear your captain, in a room down the hall, screaming at the top of his lungs as they injected the needle into his rib cage. Knowing him, he probably thought we couldn't hear. He would then walk into our dressing room like nothing had happened. That was inspirational."

The old school guys who make GDTs often, they know they can play it low-key cause they'll just make another one in a couple games. But me? I rarely make a GDT, so I like to go all out with photoshops and information when I do.

Yup. They have literally maybe played 4-6 games this year where they put in a 50-60 min effort.

Brutal 1st periods almost every game. They are never prepared. I think they have good players, but coaching is a big issue (Plus some damn heart). If half of Edmonton had the heart of Souray or Moreau, they would be pretty good.

Anyways, back on topic. Like i said. 6-1 blowout for the Canucks. Sedins make Edmonton look stupid in Vancouver like usual. Canucks will be pumped and looking for some payback.

Just wanted to come in here and say that was a great ceremony. Really was an honor to watch Trevor play for my team for two seasons. As an 8 year old, he instantly became my favorite player and I still have my youth sized Linden jersey sitting in my closet. He absolutely deserved this honor, and I'm really glad the Canucks organization gave it to him. :handclap: :)

Pretty well done, was disappointed with a couple things though -

1) The lack of Pavel (I'm a big fanboy though)

2) What was with the Naslund clip? I'm no Naslund basher, but did it look like there was any real heart or effort there? Instead of sitting down for a little clip to give best wishes to Linden, it looked like the Canucks just sent Kristen Reid out to New York to do an interview with the guy and tape his responses as his "special message to Linden." Weak.

Honestly, they did an excellent job with the ceremony. I had thought an hour would be long, but it actually wasn't.

And thank you Canucks for finally acknowledging that the team has not always worn their current jerseys. I was actually shocked when the old teammates came trotting in in their real jerseys rather than the historical revisionism we have with the post-2007 banners.

And for those dumping on Näslund, seriously?! It's his fault that they asked him about Trevor in a post-game scrum? You really think Näslund was offered a chance to say something formally and said "NO! I only want my off-the-cuff remarks on video!"? The organization obviously did that interview, and either thought it sufficed, or wasn't able to get ahold of Näslund for another one -- the guy is still playing in the NHL a few miles away, after all.

The hate Markus faces here is ridiculous -- you'd think for his part, he'd done nothing for the team.

I am 24 years old.

To watch that ceremony was completely surreal. Since I can remember, its been #16. The only bad time this team has had, really (in my young mind), has been when we were missing TL. When we needed one move to knock us into contender status, we reacquired him. Its a weird feeling to say good bye to a hero. In this day and age its hard to say "role model" about anyone, but TL exemplifies that term.

Selfless, humble, respectful and responsible.
