I'm shocked that Evander Kane wasn't selected. I guess being the best player in the WHL isn't good enough to get you on Team Canada.
chaosrevolver 12-15-2008, 06:18 PM Quinn went with a more experienced bunch...Kane will be there next year if he isn't in the NHL. Hall isn't there either and he's outscoring Tavares. It's simply due to Canada going with a more experienced team. The best players don't always make it.

Points at the CHL level doesn't mean points at the WJC level. Its a different brand of hockey, a different skill set is needed. Its the same thing as going pro. If everyone on this team plays colid two way hockey and smart offense I think we will be ok.
EllisToLeafsNation 12-16-2008, 11:22 AM I'm loving the defense that Quinn decided to go with. This will be a very fun WJC.

Fourth.
Running Riot 12-16-2008, 11:50 AM It's kind of odd that they went with 12 forwards and 8 defenseman.
I would have rather seen one defenseman dropped and Kane added as the 13th forward.

I saw an interview with Quinn on TSN last night that said they felt almost obligated to go with 8 defensemen like a lot of other teams were doing, and that it meant they had to send home a really good player that Quinn would have liked to have carried as the 13th. I figured it was Hall, but Kane is a possibility too.
Mcfly11 12-16-2008, 11:54 AM Can anyone tell me about Goloubef?

You got the goalies in the right order, but I think Tokarski is the better one and will take over ala steve mason. The d-pairings that I heard about were:
Hickey Tuebert
Aulie-Myers (6'6, 6'7 our twin towers on D)
Subban-Goloubef (possibly Pietrangelo)
Ellis (only to be a PP specialist, and they arn't comfortable with him in top 6, so hence 8 d-men)
Forward lines, who knows besides Tavares and Hodgson being #1 and #2 centers.

I read that they wanted Ellis for the powerplay situations, but were a little concerned about his ability to stack up against some of the powerhouse offensive teams in the tourney in the event of an injury, so they decided to go with 8 defensemen.

Yea that's exactly why .. and i dont seeing it being a problem ,
If push comes to shove throw Ellis on the wing , he plays like hes a forward anyway ;)
Cardiac_Canes 12-16-2008, 07:00 PM So we leave out the # 4 pick Pietroangelo ?
That's how tsn showed the pairings and I didn't really understand the choices then either. They had Pietrangelo as the 7th defenseman and Ellis as the 8th and pp specialist.

of the big 4 d-men at the draft, Pietrangelo was possibly the best, but would need the most time. Of the 4, he's the biggest 'project'. He's probably more well rounded right now than some of the others, but the other d-men are better at what they do, or at least that is the only reason I see him being a #7 d-man. He's not going to break the hickey-Teubert, and he's not the physical, imposing shutdown guys like Aulie-Myers. I figured him to be a top 6 though.
Luongo2008* 12-16-2008, 07:17 PM hodgson recieves A. Glad to see Esposito finally make it

The difference is that "experienced" junior players are 2 years older than the younger ones. The gap between young and old in the pros is quite large.
buddahsmoka1 12-16-2008, 07:27 PM Can anyone describe Aulie's game and skill set, I have never even heard of him before the training camp.
serratedmuffin 12-16-2008, 07:31 PM Can anyone describe Aulie's game and skill set, I have never even heard of him before the training camp.
Aulie is a 6'6 monster defensive d-man. He was a 4th round draft pick, and is the captain of his junior squad (brandon wheat kings). Early speculation is a Regehr clone. That doesn't mean he's going to be that good, but that's the way he plays, physical, smart, decent passer.
I havn't seen him play live, just the hype I hear about him. Hope that helps.
Cardiac_Canes 12-16-2008, 07:39 PM That doesn't mean he's going to be that good, but that's the way he plays, physical, smart, decent passer.
Physical? Really? I've heard he doesn't play a very physical game, especially considering his size. Never seen him play personally, though.

I've never seen him play either, just stuff I've heard. I've also heard he isn't overly physical. He's also 6'6 and not rail-thin, so I imagine he's been told to throw his weight around more. I guess the WJC will show what he's got. I can't imagine they would have kept him if he can't be a strong presence with Myers.

Aulies physical game has really picked up this year, and hes been hitting more and more and asserting himself a lot more since the start of the year, but it has REALLY increased since being named to Team WHL and then getting the WJC invite.

I am really hoping for the team to play sort of the same style they played in Vancouver a few years ago .
With Mike Blunden running over that guy in the first shift and guys like Downie , Bourdon , Bertram & O'Marra just laying out people .
That was the most entertaining WJC iv seen in awhile .

I hope they play a bit like that this year , being back in canada

He might break the Canadian record, but the overall record is 31 points by Peter Forsberg. With the change in tournament style (no round robin), and the improvement by the lower tier teams in the A Pool, I think that record is safe.

He's improved leaps and bounds this year after being named captain. His reach is amazing, and he's a very, very popular guy with his team mates. Not blessed with blinding speed, but generally very solid, and developing a physical streak.
If I had to build a franchise around one of our players though, it would be Schenner, not Aulie.....

go kim johnsson 514 12-17-2008, 12:49 PM Disappointed that Kevin Marshall didn't make the team, but with Canada's recent success I guess I can't rip them at all for it. It's not like the guys who were picked aren't good enough to be there.
