Would you welcome Jagr on the Devils?

This was posted on the trade rumor board - apparently a radio station in Canada is saying that Jagr wants out of Russia. They said he is interested in signing with New Jersey and would be willing to take 1.5M - 2M in order to fit under the cap.

Take it for what it's worth, but hypothetically would you be willing to take Jagr on the Devils? Even with all of the issues surrounding Jagr I would probably take him, but we would have to move one of our wingers in order to make it happen.

Lemieux's Daughter (Don Cherry's nickname for him) would be welcome on this team. He would be an upgrade over most of the roster in terms of finishing goals.

Trade the floaters and clear cap space.

I'm not sure. If we were to sign him, I wouldn't be upset, but I wouldn't really be over joyed either. He's still a great player and he's better than most of what we have on the wing, but I hate the guy. Although, Elias-Zubrus-Jagr might be pretty ****ing sweet.

I hated Jagr too, even when he became a Ranger. The guy does magical things, though. You guys essentially witnessed first hand what he did for the Rangers. As much as you think you hate him, the minute he were to sign with the Devils would be the minute a third of the fan base bought a 68 Devils jersey.

As someone else stated, take off the homer glasses. If Jagr did what he did with the Rangers except with the Calgary Flames then there wouldn't be a single vote for "no." I know you guys have other needs, such as that #1 defenseman, but if any of you would turn down a potential 30+ goal scorer not in a trade with a contract under 3 million then you need to get your head examined.

That said, I don't think that this rumor is likely at all. I will say that though I clearly would hate him becoming a Devil as a Ranger fan, I would be very happy from a pure hockey perspective if he came back.

why would you think I am not relaxed?

But to say that you wouldn't take Jagr on this team at that price for any reason than we would have to get rid of a group of our core players (ie marty, zach, zajac, madden, elias, etc) is madness.

The guy can play, and he wouldn't be the centerpiece of our offense, and best of all...he walks in July and thats it.

So basically there is no logical reason to NOT want Jagr on this team at that price (assuming the rumors are true of course)

I look at it as a switch between Gionta and Jagr. I guess the terms are all important. But lets say its for one year (ideal situation)

We trade Gionta and get assets/lose cap space. We sign Jagr. Essentially you replace one with the other, and Gio gives you some picks (or maybe a package with another Dman for an upgrade on the blue line).

Who would you rather have come playoff time? Gio or Jagr?

Granted, for me to believe Jagr wants to come here... I'd have to accept that I'm pretty sure he'd want a couple of years in his contract. In which case, it might still be worth it but i wouldn't consider it a no-brainer like a one-year

Acquiring Jagr makes players like Gionta more expandable and will give that little extra from our part to acquire a good defencemen... no ??? And comparing rookies like Bergfors and Vrana that get a average of 4 minutes/game and a star player (because he's no superstar anymore) like Jagr that can log easily 15 to 20 minutes/game is making my head hurt... I know it's a rumor and there's about 99.9% that it'll never happen or come close to even happening but if Lou can get a player the caliber of Jagr, add a d-men with the departure of Gionta or whoever (because someone is gonna leave IF we add Jagr) and maybe get a couple of picks also... wouldn't that help out the team that you like so much ?!?!?

Hell yes.

Jagr becomes detrimental to a team when they become dependent on him for their offense, largely because he can be streaky. The Rangers were in large part dependent on Jagr for scoring - look at the drop-off from last year to this year. The Devils have enough forward depth that it could not become an issue - we're scoring well enough that the team wouldn't need Jagr by any means - and of course it's only one year which isn't enough time to get "addicted" to his presence.

I'd rather a top defenseman, but a hot Jagr plus a healthy Brodeur plus our offensive depth could be cup-worthy.

By the way, Jagr goes with Parise and Zajac. Both Parise and Zajac play their best games away from the puck - Parise loves to drive to the net but plays an awesome game getting open and into the right place to pounce, Zajac loves to cycle and get the puck back and holds it well, but he's not an ideal playmaker. Jagr would complement them really, really nice.

I don't think the contract was that obscene. It was just the years + "tax free" + the team paying your living expenses. There was alot of showing off in the media by the KHL, but I think the actual contracts that Radulov and Jagr signed were pretty reasonable.

On a year-to-year basis, a team like the Oilers might have offered him just as much money.

I see no reason why this team really needs Jagr, we've proven to be capable of scoring, but we're anemic at defense and at the moment in goal. Bringing in Jagr isn't going to make either of those go away.

Jagr at 1.5 - 2 mil is a Black Friday deal, if on Black Friday stores were giving away $300 xbox 360's for 10 bucks....

the guy is a premiere talent (even though on the decline) and would instantly make the Devils a better team.

Excellent analogy. I know there is no truth to it whatsoever, but seriously, what would we have to lose? Getting him for that money allows us to trade Gionta+ for a dman exponentially making the team better.

Since there is no option for HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL NO, I just voted no. Someone said earlier that Jagr "wouldn't be the centerpiece of our team". Of course he would, and that's what we don't need. He can say all the right things about being a team player, but once he gets out there it'll be all about him. Quite a few Rangers fans I know were happy to see him go because he wouldn't mesh his game to the teammates that were brought in to help him. Does anybody really want to see that here? Go ahead and call me a homer for not wanting him, but I don't.

The best part about this stupid rumor is a bunch of people on the rumor board, pontificating about who someone they don't know, and have likely never, ever spoken to, is willing to play for.

And the other people begging for him to play for their team, as if he actually reads the boards and cares what they think.

No he wouldn't. The Rangers built their entire offense around Jagr, while he would be here to supplement the players we already have.

Marty will always be the centerpiece of our team. Marty knows it, Jagr knows it, and most importantly Lou knows it.

Come on, was it a big surprise? We couldn't even keep a 3 goal lead on some of these SE teams and were we expecting to beat the Penguins on a hot streak?

What was pathetic though is that our top two lines couldn't even score on them.

Voted no. This team lives and dies with mediocre defense, sub-par finishing of scoring chances and all four checking lines grinding their hearts out. I ´d much rather watch Gio bombard goalie´s chest armour much rather than watch Jagr´s fancy, dandy slickness and dominance of the game :sarcasm:

But to take a brief serious thought of it: I´m not sure, if I wanted Jaromir Jagr on this team. One can´t argue his unique skill set or anything he´s accomplished on his career. And that´s not what the fortcoming few lines are about.

What would be his overall effect on this team? Jagr is one of those rare players that are undeniable centerpieces of hockey teams. Ours is Marty. How would Jagr adapt to this team. His personal skills alone will put him and his linemates too on the scoresheet, but the question is, how would his presence affect the locker room?

Sure, he would definitely have some positive affect just because who he is and how he´s been someone to look up and to find inspiration from especially for guys born in the 1980´s.

But, how would it alter the pecking order of this team and climate of the locker room in general? It is hard to think of Jagr as "just one of the guys doing his job". Will it end being a clash between strong personalities and someone yelling: hii tuk mai jaaabbbb

I´d welcome Jagr with open arms, if he wasn´t riding towards the sunset of his career. To have someone like him for an upcoming team would be a blessing. But just to have him for a quick stint isn´t really what I´d be looking for, especially now that this team wouldn´t be a certain contender even if Jagr, taken a huge discount in salary, was part of this team. With a slightly stronger defense (read: with a number one d-man) it would be another story.

But then again, if Jaromir Jagr somehow came here, anti-euro, lt. col. Sutter would probably hook him up with Rupp and Vrana into his doghouse and his atoi would be around 2-3 minutes per game

Amazing how three days off after a loss seems so much longer than after a win.

As for Jagr, at $2 million, of course you take him. If he specifically wants to play for Jersey, does that suggest a grudge against certain personnel at the Rags?

Jagr could easily match Mogilny's impact (first time around!) and with the pressure of expectation reduced by the Devils' reputation and lower remuneration, be an outstanding performer. What a player of his ability and experience doesn't know about the game isn't worth considering; think Sergei Federov.

Looking at it from his perspective is intriguing. Maybe he feels his skills have eroded. He's seen at first hand what the Devs can do with less. He's always played in the "Atlantic" area teams. Pittsburgh would be a circus, the Rangers even more so, Philly are Philly, Washington has too much baggage. That leaves us and the Isles. If he does want back; maybe this destination isn't as far off base as it initially seems.

I give it a 2% possibility.:D

If half his salary had been $750,000, I think they may have kept him.

Jagr can't contribute enough on a team with no system and little talent (Washington in 2003) to be the highest paid player in the league. He could contribute enough on a team with a strong system and average talent to be worth second pair defenseman money, even 5 years later.
