So this summer I am planning on making a big move up to Jersey City to finish my bachleors/make something out of my life/be closer to the Prudential Center and I was wondering what kind of bars/resturants people would recommend around the JC/Hoboken area. My family is originally from JC but I have been a shore kid my whole life so I have not very familiar with the area.
Anyone recommend any gyms or ice rinks as well?

If you hit up Washington Street (which is the main strip) in Hoboken, you'll become real familiar with bars/restaurants.

If you want specifics, I can give you details later because I have a friend that lives in Hoboken (and has for some time).

Downtown Jersey City is gorgeous. Going to St. Peter's Prep near the waterfront were some of the best years of my life. They have many bars and restaurants for people in the age range of 18-28. There used to be a great pizza place La Rustique, but it moved across town. It seems to be an extension of Hoboken.

With Hoboken, obviously Washington St is the place to be. However, the best pizza I have ever had (and I always grew up outside of NYC so I know good pizza) is Grimaldi's on 2nd St. It's a few blocks off of Washington, but has delicious food.

Tutta Pasta on Washington is another great restaurant in Hoboken.

Iron Monkey in Jersey City. My friend also bartends at a place called Lucky 7... if you're feeling adventurous. Its on the other side of Newark Avenue, near 2nd street

Holy **** thank you for the quick responses. Im siked about this move, my uncle owns a two story townhouse and hes giving me a ridiculous deal on a 2 bed/2bath apartment in JC.
Compared to the obsene amount of money I payed for a 4 bedroom ranch house with 3 friends in Point Pleasant this is a steal, plus I will save so much money going to games, which would be an 10 minute drive or train ride away.

yea i mean i just graduated this past may so ive only been home for 6 months or so, and its not like im DESPERATE to move out, it would just be nice to have my own place

but yea, its going to have to wait because im probably going to end up renting to own or paying a mortgage because renting is a waste of money for me at this point

A lot of the stuff in the Jersey City area right along Washington is awesome. Great bars, great food, and all kinds of fun. The PATH train is probably the quickest and cheapest way to get to Devils games.

I've eaten at a couple places on the main strip and found it to be very good, safe, etc. but not really that cheap. It's not expensive either, but it is a mini-Manhattan and you have to keep that in mind. If you're getting a good deal on rent then it shouldn't be a problem for you.

(And the quick responses are because the Devils next game isn't for four days, what else are we doing? lol)

dude... so true. I've estimated I would have saved $40,000 over the past 3 years if I still lived home.

But then again, I don't have anyone to answer to....hmmmm. I think I might rather have 40k and be in bed by 11 then stumbling home at 4 a.m. broke :(

Having a steady diet of ramen and value-brand cereal products gives you character in my opinion.

It's true. It helped that originally when I graduated school I was in the restaurant business. And i was doing just that for about 6 months, until I got my 9-5 job and I still waited tables 2 nights a week. I got so much food from that, it helped.

Now... ugh now I'm like a soccer mom buying in bulk and brown bagging my lunch. Its amazing how much I used to spend on lunch every week. $6 a day (minimum), x 5 days = $30 a week.... x 50 weeks = $1,500 a year! I cut that cost in half by eating crappy, homemade sandwhiches.

It's not even just rent. Its utilities which can be costly in the extreme seasons. The time you put it to make dinner, or go out and get it.

It's the cost/time of having to do laundry at a public spot (or if you're lucky, your complex's location). And, of course, if you're really lucky you have one in your own apartment.

Internet/Cable is at least $100 a month.

Like I said... $40,000 over 3 years if my dad let me stay home. If you're family is borderline nice... stay home for a year or two and SAVE!!! Just sleep out a lot. Its better that way, if girls don't have a place to stalk you at.

Hoboken has the most bars within a square mile of any place in the US

true story

I've never heard this of Hoboken, but there are about 3,581 towns in America that people all claim this about on a per square mile or on a per capita basis, so I'm pretty skeptical. Aspen, CO, Burlington, VT, and Key West, FL are three that immediately come to mind. The trivia dork in me would love to know the real answers, but I'm not even sure there is a legitimate way to be certain.

I was wondering what kind of bars/resturants people would recommend around the JC/Hoboken area.

Like everyone else in Jersey City and Hoboken, you'll be going out in Manhattan far more often than JC/Hoboken. :teach2: Congratulations on the upcoming move, you're in for a ton of fun....err.... and studying and stuff too of course.

Hoboken was once known as the city with "a bar on every corner" and in fact was once listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the city with "Most bars in a square mile".[citation needed]. However, the local newspaper, the Hoboken Reporter, recently investigated and determined that while there may be the most liquor licenses per corner, New Orleans has more bars per corner. There were well over 200 bars in Hoboken in the first half of the 20th century. There are still well over 100 now. Hoboken limits by law the number of liquor licenses to the number of blocks and the limit is usually reached. Additionally, no license can be moved to within 200 feet (61 m) of another bar or 500 feet (150 m) from a church, which makes it nearly impossible to open a new bar (except in newly renovated perimeter regions of the city).

that clears it up

Lol. This entire post should be stickied and quoted for truth. As long as living with parents isnt cramping your lifestyle (read: girlfriends cant sleep over), I'd highly recommend staying as long as possible. Not until you're 30 or anything, but you know what I mean. I have a friend who until getting laid off recently had a Wall Street job and lived with his parents. Banking that salary and living at home instead of living in the city like everyone else has saved him over $130,000 over the last 4 years, and he's getting ready to buy his first house at 25.

That's very good right out of college. You're making a smidge more than me and I've been in my industry for 2 years.

Honestly, cut your spending habits down now and you'll have a ton of money in the future. Doing the little things really add up over time (see my above example on saving $750 a year on lunch alone). Its easy to spend money while home now, cause you have no rent, etc. But think if you saved all that money now!

Living near the light rail will save me a ton of money too, I of course will have my car but being so close to the city and Pru Center is going to kick so much ass.

Just watch out w/ the housing market in that area. I went to Stevens Tech in Hoboken for 5 years and constantly looked at apartment rates there to try to get out of the campus dorms, and the rates were ridiculous for awhile. It might stabilize now w/ the banking crisis, but you're probably going to find that similar apartments in JC & Hoboken are vastly different in price.

As for food, Hoboken's got pretty much everything. I still swing by Vito's Deli (http://www.vitosdeli.com/) (8th & Washington) for subs when I'm in town - they have the best homemade mozzarella I've ever had, pizza we always went to Gios or Benny's (around 6th & Washington), Sri Thai (I'm pretty sure that's the name, haven't been there in years) @ 3rd and Bloomfield was excellent if you like Thai, and Robongi has some of the best sushi in town (between 5th & 6th on Washington). Philly's Cheesesteaks (between 5th & 6th on Washington) were always good (bit pricey for a college kid on a regular basis), Qdoba always hit the spot (Mexican place, 4th & Washington), and there's way too many Chinese places to really recommend anything.

As for bars, Black Bear was always good (between 2nd & 3rd on Washington), Mile Square (I think between 3rd & 4th on Washington) has around 30 beers on tap, Farside (near 6th on Washington) had a terrace in the back you could hang out on during the summer, East LA's (between 4th & 5th on Washington I think) has the best margarita's in town, Oddfellows (between Newark & 1st on River) was good for cajun stuff and has an open courtyard in the back, I think the Skybar reopened (corner of 1st & River) if you like the outdoor bit and the 1st floor is a decent Irish place. I used to head over to Scotland Yard (between Hudson Pl & Newark on Hudson St) for their live blues (and to sit in on open mic nights), Bahama Mamma's (near Black Bear) had dollar drafts on Thursdays, but it was always packed. Rogo's had the best wing night in town (used to be 5 cent wings and $5 pitchers on Tuesdays) but they're way back at 8th & Park (I think). There's plenty more places to go, so I just recommend taking a few nights and doing the grand tour.

Damn, thanks. The building I am moving into is owned by my family to begin with so I dont have to worry about housing rates. :D

Anyone recommend any gyms or ice rinks as well?

Will you have a car? If not, you'll do what most people living in Hoboken & Jersey City do and go to SkyRink at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan. It's 4 long blocks from the PATH and open hockey is astoundingly ridiculous at $33 for just 80 minutes. After all, you are playing in Manhattan and are paying Manhattan prices. And the worst part about it is you have to deal with all the obnoxious Vinnie's and Tony's from Bensonhurst (you know the type: the trash that you see at the Rock when the NYR are in town)

If you have a car, you are then close to Floyd Hall Arena at Montclair State University ($10 for 90 minutes of open :amazed:, compare and contrast that to Sky Rink!), and Ice House in Hackensack. A little further away are the Ice Vault in Wayne, Palisades Cetner Ice in West Nyack, NY, Sportorama in Monesy, NY, Codey Arena (formerly South Mountain Arena) in West Orage.

Not sure about the Bayonne High School Rink as they use it almost exclusively for themselves.

In an email discussion with the guy running the AmeriHealth Pavilion rink at the Pru Center, it will eventually be open for public skating and/or open hockey, although there is no definitive date as to when this happens.

Good luck in your move.

I lived in Hoboken from 98 until '06, my girlfriend lived in Hamilton Park for about five years, so I know both towns like the back of my hand.

I'll start off with Hoboken.

Food:

Leo's Grandevous, 2nd and Grand, best Italian food for the money, 15 bucks for veal parm, you can't beat that. Wine is pretty cheap too.

Trattoria Sapporito - 4th and Wash - I used to live right upstairs from this place, it is hands down the best food in town, and it's BYOB which rules. They have a standard menu but their specials change regularly and that's what you want, it's always something amazing.

Fiore's Deli - Betw 4th and 5th on Adams - Best mozzarella in town, best sandwich you can get is roast beef, mozz, roasted red peppers, you'll thank me for it - just don't get it the night you have a date, you'll reek of garlic for a good six hours.

Arthurs - 2nd and Washington - gigantic steaks and liters of beer, awesome home fries too, what else do you need?

Carlos Bakery - Right across from City Hall, between Newark and 1st on Washington - best cannoli's I've ever had.

Pizza - I'll leave this to you, there's really not a bad place in town, they all have their own styles, I liked Fillipos, mostly because it was close to my apt, its near 4th and Washington, their white slice with tomatos is awesome but again, garlicy as hell. People will tell you how awesome Benny's is but I think they suck, they never cook their pizza fully and give you an attitude when you ask for it well done, 7 Star, 4th and Garden, is my spot for big ass pizza. Mario's on 8th and Garden is good too - their bruschetta pie is pretty bangin and they have good wings, as well as beer on tap! Then there's Imposto's on 1st and Wash - they have the good crazy pizza: bbq chicken, baked ziti, etc. Good stuff.

Mission Burrito - 4th between Garden and Park - Amazing Mexican food, but pricey, you'll look at the menu and say 'What? 15 Bucks for a steak burrito?' but then the dude gives it to you and you realize you a. cannot carry it and b. need a fork and knife to eat it, you also won't be able to finish it in one sitting.

O'Neills - 4th and Park - bar/grill, awesome food, menu changes regularly and it's always good

La Isla - 1st and Wash next to Imposto's - always crowded for a reason, best Cuban food for miles. Everything on the menu is awesome and they make the best coffee in town too.

Okay I need a break before I do the bars.

LOL. 7 Star Pizza is definately huge.

Hoboken, now there's a place I could never live. Used to go quite a bit but I'm not good for recommendations because my strategy was: enter bar, drink ridiculous amounts of liquor, pay whatever they ask me, loudly demand the driver go to McDonald's on Tonnelle Ave, (puke?), and then not remember....

But, as long as you have a smidge more self-control than I do, it should be a great place to live.

If you are looking for a workout place not to far from Hoboken. A Swedish guy I know recommended a 24 hour gym in Chelsea. He swears by the Steam Room and Sauna there. He's there after most game nights.

As far as Hoboken goes, I was always a fan of said Arthur's as well as Tutta Pasta and you can't go wrong with most or all places recommended above.

Can't speak much to JC, but I've been in Hoboken for over 5 years now. Here are the top restaurants I'd recommend:

Italian - Margherita's is probably my favorite. Small place & usually a wait, but you can just have a drink across the street at the 8th Street Tavern. Leo's is also very good & I like that they usually have some Sinatra on. Many would consider Augustino's the best (and you usually have to make a reservation several weeks in advance), but I've only eaten there once.

Mexican - Charritos - not much of a contest, by far the best Mexican food I've ever had. Never liked guacamole before this place either, but they make it fresh for you at the table. They have two locations - downtown is very small, uptown has a bit more room. Usually a wait, but they're usually good about taking down your cell number & calling when a table becomes available so you can hit a nearby bar.

American - Court Street is always good to go to. Really good food & reasonable prices. Usually have Prime Rib or Lobster nights as well, but the whole menu is good. I also like going to Zacks, as they always have great specials
(been there a lot of times & don't think I've had to order off the regular menu yet). Elysian Cafe is another favorite - limited menu, but the food is good & they make good drinks.

Spanish / South American - Cucharamama - small place, but great food at a great price. Flank steak is just awesome there. Their sister restaurant Zafra's is also very good (& much nicer inside), but also more expensive. Save a few bucks & BYOB at Cucharamama where the food is just as good.

Other - Arthur's is good place to grab a burger or steak & some beer. Only dissapointment is that they don't serve fries. I'm a big fan of Helmer's which serves German food, but that's not for everyone. At the very least, it worth stopping in for the beer selection as they have many good European beers on tap that you won't find elsewhere. Oddfellows is good to go to every now & then for Cajun / New Orleans style food.

There are also a lot of new / nice restaurants on the waterfront, but for the most part they are overpriced & the food isn't that great. Three Forty Grill is probably the best of the bunch, but be prepared to be disappointed at most of these places. Teak & Lua have great atmosphere's, as both are nicely setup...but the food is very overpriced at both.

A good resource for Hoboken bars & restaurants is www.kannekt.com. The "Editors Picks" for restaurants are usually pretty spot on.

As for bars, there are plenty of places to choose from...all depends what you're looking for. There are a lot down by the PATH to choose from as well as Washington Street & 1st Street (which are mostly Irish bars).

Bars down by the PATH are usually more packed & probably better for a night out - I like Green Rock & Texas Arizona of the bunch.

Onieals, & Buskers were usually good spots to grab a few drinks at (the latter of which serves Labatt's on tap...tough to find places with Canadian beer on tap). Black Bear & Trinity are good sports bars, & I like Farside as well (smaller, more low key).

Okay bars.....

In Hoboken you'll find everything from seedy scary old man bars to "My New Haircut" joints. I prefer the neighborhood Irish pubs...

Moran's (5th and Garden), Duffy's (3rd and Bloom), O'Neil's (4th and Park) are just a few. I happen to captain the B-league dart team at Moran's so you'll usually find me there. I also know a few bartenders at Duffy's and I can often be found there as well.

Then you got your live music joints, when in Hoboken, there's only three: Scotland Yard (Observer and River) and Whiskey Bar (3rd, I think, and Washington) and of course Maxwell's way up on 10th and Wash. The Yard has been Hoboken's home for live blues since forever, live music pretty much every weeknight, on weekends one night they have a DJ, I forget which one. Whiskey Bar is okay, usually just cover bands though. Maxwell's is a Hoboken institution, if you've never heard of it , hit up Google, the place should be a national landmark.

Now back when I lived there, we had more good dive bars, Kelly's up town was a good one, Mario's over on Park is still there, Louise and Jerry's on 4th and Wash is still there. But town has changed a lot. Hoboken has become exponentially trendy in the past ten years, thus you'll find all kinds of trendy d-bag joints like 'Nine' where people line up for 2 hours in the cold to get in, just to be seen there and drop twenty bucks on an 'Insertlameassfruit"-atini's. River Street or Lana or whatever it is this week is your meathead guido joint and there's a million of these - you can tell these places a mile away, neon lights, thumpy music, and skanks and d-bags lined up outside. Not my cup of tea as you can tell, I want a pint a shot and some good people to talk to.

Feel free to PM me with any questions, I'll pick my girls brain for some good JC places, just let me know what part you're moving to.

You're not alone my friend...too bad the ratio finally got a bit better in my last year. Would've been nice to have that for a full term there.

The Elysian Cafe is actually French...they'll have some live music every now and then. One of the guys that works in Vitos plays there every now and then. And the memories at Court Street - the head of the music & arts dept at Stevens was a regular there, so that was the celebration spot after concerts & events.

Oh, and I forgot Mikey Squared - used to be Dipper's and was the Stevens college bar for the most part. They have trivia nights where you can win a decent amount off your tab if you come out on top.

Court Street used to do an awesome prime rib night too for real cheap, haven't been there in a while but I forgot about them, and probably a dozen or two other joints.

All good Irish bars that you mentioned. For music, there's also Willie McBride's, which has some decent cover bands from time to time. O'Donoghues also used to have live music, but not sure if that's still the case. Kelly's is gone now I believe, with a wine bar on its way in. I like Louise & Jerry's...Mario's, wow I'm surprised that place is still in business. Has to be one of the most uninviting bars out there & I don't think I've ever seen anyone go in that place. Total dive bar, but if that's your thing...

Great points about the trendy bars that have opened up there in recent years as well...

Haha I know people on Barton. Six Degrees of Seperation
I was on Edgar Rd off of Beaver Dam, two houses down from the Fire House. Best years of my life, if you lived in Point in 2005-2007 there was a good chance you partied at my house. Thousands of dollars well wasted.

Willie's backing band changes up a lot I think, but if you've seen him, you know, he's a rather unique Irish folk singer. Half comedy/half folk singing type thing, puts on a great show.
