Preview (http://www.nhl.com/ice/preview.htm?id=2008020341&view=story)

Regardless of who’s in goal, the New Jersey Devils’ surest route to victory has been with a potent offense. The Devils seek to win their sixth straight game without Martin Brodeur when they visit the Atlantic Division rival Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night.

New Jersey (12-7-2) dropped five of its first six games after losing Brodeur to a torn biceps muscle, but has since recovered to win a season-best five in a row. While the Devils’ defensive production has remained steady, their offense has surged. New Jersey, which managed only eight goals in the first six games of Brodeur’s absence, is averaging 4.6 per game during the winning streak and has scored at least three times in each of the last five contests.

Three goals proved to be just enough at Florida on Wednesday night, when Johnny Oduya scored with 55.5 seconds left in overtime to give the Devils a 3-2 victory. Scott Clemmensen made 35 saves for New Jersey, which had to play the extra session after squandering a 2-0 lead in the final 2:19 of regulation.

“We found a way, and that’s important,” New Jersey coach Brent Sutter said. “We did a lot of good things, but we have to use it as a learning experience. When we’re in control like that, we can’t let it slip away.”

Brian Gionta and Travis Zajac scored in regulation for the Devils, who now have a chance to win six in a row for the first time since a nine-game winning streak from Nov. 17-Dec. 7, 2007. The Devils are 9-1-1 this season when scoring three goals or more, compared to 3-6-1 when they don’t.

All three of the low-scoring wins came in October, but one was a 2-1 overtime victory at Pittsburgh on Oct. 11, when Zach Parise scored the game-winner. Brodeur earned the win in that matchup but didn’t need to work particularly hard for it, as the Devils outshot the Penguins 49-15.

Pittsburgh’s Marc-Andre Fleury made a career-high 47 saves in that loss, but like Brodeur he is currently sidelined, having missed the last five games with an undisclosed injury. The Penguins, who had won all six of their November games before Fleury went down, have alternated losses and wins in his absence.

Sidney Crosby scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season and Evgeni Malkin assisted on both to give Pittsburgh a one-goal lead after two periods Friday night in Buffalo, but rookie goalie John Curry allowed two third-period goals as the Penguins fell 4-3. Curry, who stopped all 11 shots he faced Wednesday in relief of an ineffective Dany Sabourin to beat the New York Islanders in his NHL debut, made 28 saves in his first start but couldn’t hold the lead in a third period where the Sabres outshot the Penguins 10-3.

“You can’t blame him on any of the goals,” Crosby said. “He made some big saves and kept us in it. He did a great job.”
Pittsburgh (13-6-3) had plenty of chances, but failed to score in seven power-play opportunities. The Devils have won six of their last seven visits to Pittsburgh, with the lone exception a 7-1 loss on March 22, when Malkin and Ryan Malone each scored twice and the Penguins tallied five goals in the third period.

Devils News
The five-game winning streak is the first by the Devils since February 16-24 of last season. ... New Jersey improved to 38-18-7 all-time against the the Panthers, including an 18-10-4 mark at Florida. ... RW Brian Gionta followed up his goal and assist last Thursday in Newark with another goal Wednesday. It was his seventh goal this season. ... The rally in the closing seconds of regulation by the Panthers marks the second time in the last two weeks that New Jersey has surrendered the lead late. ... They allowed the equalizer in the last second in Washington on November 14. ... C John Madden continued to be a scratch with a sore foot and is at day-to-day status. He suffered the injury in the Devils' 3-1 win at home last week.

Penguins News
Friday's loss snapped the Penguins' five-game winning streak against the Sabres. Pittsburgh had won three straight in Buffalo. Pittsburgh had its five-game road winning streak halted. ... Rookie G John Curry made his first career start, allowing four goals on 32 shots. ... Captain C Sidney Crosby's two goals was his second two-goal game of the season and gives him multiple points in three of his last four games. ... C Evgeni Malkin extended his league-lead in assists to 27 with a pair. ... Pittsburgh has converted just one of its last 22 power play opportunities.

if you dont know already, Gulitti is reporting the Zubrus isn't (didn't) taking part in the morning skate and doesnt know why.

i'm off to get a haircut and lunch. make sure you predict the score!

the Devils are 2-0 on this roadtrip and no one predicted the score of those two games, so do it and get it wrong and we win!

Here's what he had to say:

Dainius Zubrus is the only player not on the ice for the skate. There is no word yet on why he's not out there, but he bussed to the arena with the rest of the team for the skate, so hopefully I'll be able to talk to him. Assistant coach John MacLean filled in at center on the line with Patrik Elias and Brian Gionta, but they've left the spot open for the most part and all of the other lines are intact, which would lead me to believe that Zubrus is going to play, but that's just a guess on my part..

So Johnny Mac makin a comeback? :sarcasm:

Now this is the true test. Winning against Tampa and Florida is nice...but not that impressive. If the Devils can get two points tonight in Pittsburgh it will be a great sign that this team is for real. They really need to bring their A game for 60 minutes against the Pens.

Pittsburgh lost last night and they'll be fired up tonight in front of their own crowd...they'll be all over us. They Devils must weather the storm. They must be prepared.

Finally a big test, but not the biggest of blows if we lose tonight. We're not going to win all these games during the tough stretch so a loss and the end to the winning streak is coming.

Divisional games are important though, so I'd rather see the losses come against Buffalo and Montreal than the Pens and Flyers.

Devils center Dainius Zubrus skipped today's morning skate because he had a touch of the stomach flu, but he will play in tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Devils coach Brent Sutter said.

"He's just not feeling 100 percent," Sutter said. "He's going to be fine. He wanted to go on actually. It was my decision not to let him go on. I thought it was best for him not to bother going out. Just relax this morning and he'll be ready to play tonight."

Seriously, Clemmensen has done nothing since getting starts to give Sutter reason that he should sit. So he's in until then.

Pretty much 99.9% of NHL goalies would have won those games. The only one you could say he had a hand in was the last one. It's a nice run to work with, but potentially having Weekes sit until 12/13 is crazy. He needs to get work because this will end, and when it does, it will end abruptly.

He should get starts... he shouldn't get every start though, unless you think he's going to be still starting the bulk of the games in February/March. It's unrealistic and he's definately been lucky. He's stopping at a better clip than Marty!

How is it ********?

If you're going to go with "everyone should prove to me their *opinion*" BS, why don't you prove me wrong instead?

OK. Here's why you're wrong:

11/20 vs. Florida 3-1 WIN Clemmensen 23 Saves on 24 shots
11/23 at Tampa Bay 7-3 WIN Clemmensen 26 saves on 29 shots
11/26 at Florida 3-2 WIN Clemmensen 36 saves on 38 shots.

And the 6 goals given up are:
-A powerplay goal against where Frolik was all alone for the shot.
-Radim Vrbata in the slot putting the puck past Clemmensen's flank on an easy put-back.
-Martin St. Louis with a similar goal, only the puck bounced to him.
-A penalty shot goal by Ryan Malone
-Jay Bouwmeester's shot beat Clemmensen stick side
-David Booth pounded home a rebound

Most of those goals would have been prevented by the defense and you can only really argue that Clemmensen could have truly stopped the Frolik goal (he had a look at it, IIRC), the Malone goal (all alone, no excuses), the Booth goal (smother the puck!). Aside from that, he's been pretty solid in net. Sure, it hasn't been pretty. But last I checked, this is a results oriented business. Clemmensen has been getting results and therefore, he's getting most of the starts now. And you can never assume that any other goalie can always get the job done - just ask Olaf Kolzig, Joey MacDonald, Tomas Vokoun, and Jose Theodore for examples.

He should get starts... he shouldn't get every start though, unless you think he's going to be still starting the bulk of the games in February/March. It's unrealistic and he's definately been lucky. He's stopping at a better clip than Marty!

Yes, it's unrealistic to give him Marty's workload. But this is Scott Clemmensen's third straight start. It's not like he's going to get 10-15 starts in a row. Kevin Weekes played LAST FRIDAY. That's 8 days ago. It really isn't crazy to have him not play to 12/13 if Clemmensen is doing well enough in net.

It is crazy because game-shape wise, Weekes will be just as out of it as he was coming in for Marty. I just feel he got the job done against weak teams when the team in front of him was playing well, with the exception being the second half of the last game, where they were not playing well.

I think against good teams, the results are going to be more like the Washington game, and while I agree to ride it while you can, I think Weekes needs work and when I watch Clemmer, I don't see anything along the lines of "WOW, I need this guy in net".

He's just in a streak where he does no wrong, even in situations like Frolik earlier in the game at the Rock, where he plays something into a certain goal, fate intervenes and keeps it out.
