Gee Wally 11-24-2008, 01:08 PM Okay gang need your help again.
My oldest son, in high school, wants/needs a laptop for Christmas. As most know I am an idiot with anything like this.
His use will be primarily homework and the 'net. No need for anything else/extras.
I'd like to keep it to $500 to $600- or even less if possible.
So,...suggestions?

That's a pretty nice deal.
Buffaloed 11-25-2008, 07:32 PM I always buy manufacturer recertified/refurbished computers and hard drives. You can get a good basic notebook for under $400 and a really good one for under $500. The Sony VAIO 1.73GHz Intel Pentium Dual Core Notebook goes for $700-800. The recertified one can be had for $484. I haven't had any problems with recertified merchandise purchased from eCost or TigerDirect.

guinness 11-25-2008, 08:24 PM Try Best Buy, I bought my Toshiba from them last summer for $700, and it got me through my final year of college, doing some programming, statistics, writing papers, e-mail, web stuff.
newegg is a good bet too.
I would say if you can, try and get a laptop with an Intel Core 2 Duo, and as much RAM and the bigger the hard drive the better. The graphics don't really matter at that price, and they all have wireless and DVD burners anymore.
Gee Wally 11-28-2008, 07:26 AM well I just got back from craziness at the stores. Doorbuster people were lined up in some places overnight. So even though I got to places before they opened I was deep in line.
Anyhow , this is what I ended up getting my son:

Hopefully it fits his school needs.
Also got him MS home/Student for $49-

SilverSeven 11-28-2008, 03:14 PM For something simple, the Acer Aspire One is great. $399. Smaller than a textbook.
It has completely replaced my 15.4" Compaq. It is just as fast (though less powerful), has a MUCH better battery life, and is so damn tiny and light. I dont get back pain anymore lol.

Gee Wally 11-28-2008, 05:27 PM why did you need a laptop for high school anyways?
because my boy, his brother and sister and Mother fight over the desk top we have.
Plus he works in some team environments on projects and the laptop is conducive to his effectiveness in the group(s).

oh, i was directing it at silverseven. But I guess it makes sense these days. I guess there's going to come a point where everyone in wealthy families will have their own computers. As long as he doesn't abuse it, it's fine I guess.
They should make some laptops that are just like calculators, with no abilities to go onto non educational web sites, and no abilities to add programs other than what the kid needs for his particular program.
Then the computers would be way cheaper and offer no distractions.
