Shut off the water and remove the police protection because the City must protect the taxpayer. No special treatment for these Government financed sport arenas or stadiums.

What?
The Devils and the City of Newark have been arguing since they first broke ground about who was paying what and when. This isn't really new. Newark has wanted to Devs to more and more stuff as the project went on. I believe Vanderbeek also wont pay somethings since the the failed to be completed on time. He aint broke but he certainly is trying to save every penny he can. Frankly i don't blame him. Why not see what you can get away with..
OnDaMark 11-16-2008, 09:48 PM Refunds to all season ticket holder because the Devils failed to put an entertaining product on the ice. Let's see what we can get away with.

Seriously? Let's make fun of him because his business is going down?
:help::shakehead
Clarkson Falls Down 11-16-2008, 09:58 PM Seriously though, what the hell is going on there? Vanderbeek must be broke or he's really cheap.
Can anyone who is better informed on the situation please lend a hand here?

All the part of doing business in the wonderful, ethical city of Newark. Newark is just trying to shakedown Vanderbeek. Happens all the time behind the scenes.
We're seeing posturing now on both sides, but this issue is being blown out of proportion overr issues that happen everday in the world of real estate.
And they should just give this pompom guy a small contract to distrubute NJD colored pompoms for the team to just shut him up.
$41k is nothing for a multimillion dollar operation like the Devils. This will be settled very quietly as someone will be paid off in typical fashion. Just a tabloid type of he said/she said article complete with brainless "Let's go Rangers" banter in the comments section.

Well, I'm sure something similar will happen in Pittsburgh, too, once that gets up and running. Without the "Let's go Rangers,":sarcasm: but the same posturing and pressure from both sides to see what they can get away with. Agree this is nothing big, just bad publicity. nj.com articles are always full of stupid people anyway. But Jeff is certainly not broke. Pinching pennies, sure, but I don't blame him.

Yeah, but I kind of think doctorphil1's comment: "But then again Booker did enjoy playing the role of clown when the circus came to town last month" is kind of clever and witty.

Is Doctorphil1 one of the many Rangers fans who do nothing but flood Devils news stories? Or is that the one who makes up fake crimes reported around the Prudential Center to try to scare people?
But they dont care about the Devils, remember that.

how do you even arrive at "being broke" or "team up for sale" from any of these recent articles about rent and payments?
there were agreements signed when the Rock was (going to be) built. if one side didn't live up to their end, the other side has every right to wait until it is either mutually settled or gone to arbitration.
obviously, Newark doesn't want to "shut the water off" on the main tenant of the place, so they are trying everything they can to make Vanderbeek pay.
the funny thing about all of these articles is they aren't really paying attention when Vanderbeek says "it wasn't completed on time." if there was an agreement to have the place built by Date X, then Newark is on the wrong end of the arguement.

The Star Ledger is in bed with Zoffinger and the NJSEA, anything to make the Devils look bad is not surprising.
They did something similar during the summer with the Rutgers stadium expansion and their marketing for which they ardently supported Zoffingers side of the story

Nobody despises the NYR more than me and I wear that as a badge of honor, but it's the "oh but I wish they never left the Meadowlands in the first place" or the "well, there's still a sheet of ice available at the IZOD Center if they have to move back" or, "see, I told you so, this new Arena has been a problem from the start" comments that I get a kick out of.
If there was really a major issue here such as the arena being on the verge of bankruptcy, or VBK really being in financial trouble with an imminent threat to sell the team to out of state interests, then those comments might have some merritt. (Except for the "Let's Go Rangers" comment which will never have any merritt)
But it's just a $40,000 bill we're talking about here.
Mr.Krinkle 11-16-2008, 11:28 PM Without those funds, Aguayo said he cannot overhaul his new plant in Pennsylvania to accommodate his 5-ton machines. Without the machines, he cannot create the specialized yarn he needs. And without that yarn, he said, business is on the ropes.
Wow Maura, stay up all night cooking up that zinger?
22ShouldBeRetired 11-16-2008, 11:28 PM Sounds like someone pissed in someones cheerios and thought it would be a good idea for some bad press. Big companies always put off paying the bills till they have to. Take this article with a grain of salt.

As muttley said the city of Newark is trying to fleece all the money they can out of Vanderbeek and he is returning the favor. Both sides make alot of sense to be honest but this wont be resolved any time soon. The mayor wasn't happy wit hthe devils from the day he stepped into office. He keeps changing things in the deal and hasn't lived up to some things he has promised. I read Vanderbeek was also upset about the current state of redevelopment in the surrounding area not progressing as quickly as was promised. Vanderbeek is probably looking at that situation as hurting his business since once the area gets done up it will be much more attractive for booking events.

Don't be an idiot. It is now obviously becoming a case where Newark didn't even read the contract, or when Booker did read and approve James' contract, he didn't bother to tell anyone because it would ruin his gimmick as a reformer.

He couldn't sell the team to out of state interests, if he wanted to, because he's the manager of the arena itself. And quite possibly the owner, although that's not exactly opaque.
It would be legendary stupidity to do that. That's why the "move them back to IZOD people" are suffering from a case of massive retardation. Yes, the manager of the arena is going to move his hockey team which plays at his arena to his his competitor's arena in order to give them more dates and him less.
NJ.com should just shut down comments, it likely hurts business.
Newark put up (re: was given by the state) a significant amount of money towards the project, but the deal for them, is garbage. And let's not forget who signed off on this project in the first place. The concessions that Booker got were rather lame. He's been mostly silent on this, probably the only person that actually knows what the deal is. Councilman Corrupt doesn't know **** and is probably on the outside looking in.
The more I think about this story, if I was looking for someone who was broke, I'd be looking at Newark.

Arbitration will settle this. This is what happens when the city doesn't know how to read a contract.

AEG manages the arena, but Jeff owns it.

I believe the city of Newark technically owns the arena and the Devils as part of the contract manages and collects the revenue from it. The Devils then went out and hired AEG to book events for them. That doesn't mean though the Devils aren't the managers.

Yeah, Newark owns the arena but that might be in name only. Remember, Sharpe James.
