The NHL's regular season hasn't even started and already Devils center Bobby Holik has heard from members of the media and fans eager to label his partnership with wingers Mike Rupp and Dainius Zubrus "Crash Line II."
He is not at all amused and doesn't care for the reference to the line he centered back in the mid-1990s with Randy McKay and Mike Peluso as his wingers.
"Crash Line II?"
"Absolutely not," Holik snapped. "You can't just make up names because you're bored or you're being creative. Before the 'Crash Line' got the name, it was two years of hard work."
I am so thrilled he is back.

Richer's Ghost 10-07-2008, 08:24 PM Great - Bobby smacks us down without even considering all the time and effort we put into our posting on here.
Bored? Yes...
Creative? Yes... (well not much on this one).
But if the shoe fits... wear it.
Maybe TG can warm him to the label after a few weeks.
(but his response is pretty cool).

donGjohnson 10-07-2008, 10:04 PM Holik is a great team player, one who has two-way talent as well. Atlanta overpaid and then asked too much, it's that simple. He fits perfectly in a system like NJ, where you don't have to score a ton of be flashy, you just have to play a team game and win.
Devilsfanatic 10-07-2008, 10:10 PM Love that he's back, Atlanta had him at what? Line 1 or 2? Not where Robert belongs. But now he's back home and he's going to be a fantastic addition! BRING ON FRIDAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

i was apprehensive, but i wasnt against it necessarily. some of us actually wanted him back because of what the devs were lacking. he knows the system, hes was a great part of the machine before and hell help the devs be successful and competitive again right when we need him most. i could care less about him and the rangers. if anything, he hornswaggled them good and proper. and i cant fault him for that. that line hes on now will be vital and play a role in EVERY single game this year. while rupp and clarkson might not be as important on that line, the addition of zubie keeps it from being a one dimensional physical line. im looking forward to seeing that line do what it can.

Capa* 10-08-2008, 08:35 AM Ha.. all ive ever seen is NJD fans hating on Holik for doing what Gomez did..noone wanted him back, now i see all this praise, priceless
NJDevs26 10-08-2008, 08:40 AM This might be an even better quote, or at least more telling:
Holik said he missed the culture. “It’s very professional and more team-oriented than most other teams in the league,” he said. “You don’t have young guys and veterans. You have a team.”
Devilswede 10-08-2008, 08:43 AM Ha.. all ive ever seen is NJD fans hating on Holik for doing what Gomez did..noone wanted him back, now i see all this praise, priceless
Us winning a Cup right after he left made it easier to deal with too, and also it's been a while since he played for the Rangers. Holik never made comments about how he would never sign with the Rangers before he actually did, unlike Gomez.
That's why Gomez will always be the more hated one.
I still have hard feelings towards Holik, but I can see past that because I know he improves our team right now. He's needed and that's why I'm accepting him once again.
Jason MacIsaac 10-08-2008, 09:02 AM When this whole board hated on him last summer I was one of the ones who wanted him back. Holik was used poorly in NY and Atlanta, he is a shutdown guy and him back on the 4th line will take pressure off of Madden. Line matching will be a little easier, Madden won't be out there 18 minutes a game like last year playing every second against Lecavalier, Holik will be out in defensive zone faceoffs.

:handclap::handclap::handclap:
devs4L 10-08-2008, 11:50 AM Don't compare Holik to Gomez, as Devilswede said Gomez is a liar; he lied to his fan-base. That (at least for myself) is the majority of the reason why I can't stomach him. Holik never said he wouldn't sign with the rangers. It's way different.
When you're a true fan of any team, in the end, wanting success for that team takes presidence over any hatred toward any player. I'm sure not every rangers fan loved Avery before he put on a rangers jersey. But lacking grit, even the biggest Avery detractor knew that he would help enormously in that department.
Brendan Morrow has fought Avery maybe more than any other player. Out of his own mouth it's now "water under the bridge."
Holik is going to be a huge asset to this team. Let's not forget he'll be getting powerplay time, and now the faceoff is automatically in the other team's zone. His skill on the faceoff could be huge for our power-play, let alone his willingness to go to the net.
Of course there will still be people who won't forgive Holik. But for what seems like most, time heals all wounds too. He wanted back, he understands how great this organization is. I'm extremely excited to see him back.
Clarkson Falls Down 10-08-2008, 11:51 AM Hmm. Interesting. I said that I'd rather use a cheaper player to fill the role - which turned out to be wrong. But I also said that I'd rather spend the money on Holik over Brylin - which is correct.
I found it very funny how some people were repulsed at the idea. They threw it back up faster than a 13 year old who drank too much beer.

"Holik and I don't think its that close really. Holik was leading this team is scoring while shutting down top offensive players. Even strength I would rather Holik out there against a Sundin or Jagr rather then Madden. I still rather the day when we had both, which will happen IMO next year."
"This thread is a joke, people simply are bandwagon'er fans from the 03 cup run or little 14 year olds who have never seen Holik play. The guy was an absolute beast on the ice. The only fault to his game was that he played tough and was penalized for playing tough. He was the dead puck era version of Ryan Getzlaf. The only difference is that he went up against all the stars and shut them down. He didn't have the option to free wheel it in New Jersey.
Bobby Holik at his age right now would pop right back into NJ's system and contribute. His game is built for a system."
Oh I did....*Jason MacIsaac pats himself on the back.*

A little scary that a few people talked like they knew what was going to happen!
Richer's Ghost 10-08-2008, 12:19 PM And for the record Brit, I was in favor of Bobby, I just took issue with the Madden vs. Holik debate... or discussion I suppose... it wasn't much of a debate really. But 4th liners weren't the primary area of need at the time.
I wanted Arnott.

Richer's Ghost 10-08-2008, 12:27 PM You rascal, you seemed pretty opposed to it in that first thread. I'll let you off this time. ;)
2 reasons - position and line he will/has played on.
Holik would take a major step down in role if he came to NJ; and we need a top power center not a 4th line center at this point.
Pando on wing does shut down and shadow duty; whereas Madden fills what would be the comparable Holik role on that line. Do we need 2 3rd line centers at this point? I'd love to see Madden shifted up to offense minded 2nd line center duty but I don't see it happening. (maybe he'd win a Selke then :sarcasm:)
We need to be focusing on a top 6 power center which Holik is not in NJ right now regardless of what he used to be and what his last role was.
Really? I thought that explained my position well. (Arnott) And thankfully Lou got Rolston first, then spent the money on Holik.
Edit*
If you have any doubt if I'm a Holik supporter or not, you should see what's hanging in my office (for the past 3 years).
A quote: "When the team is not doing well, rarely is there a situation where somebody says 'Yeah, but that guy is playing good or he did his job.' But when the team does well, it's almost automatic that everybody did his job. Those are the kind of philosophies I live by." - Bobby Holik

DevilsFan38 10-08-2008, 01:59 PM I agree 100%. I really don't understand the interest in Holik.
Why someone would want to pay him $2.5 million (the number thrown around earlier in the thread) to center the 4th line is beyond me.
Whoops. It's a good thing Lou is the GM and not me.
In my defense, there was a lot more to that post in which I explained my position a bit more, especially in regard to the salary cap, but I was still way off.

Big#D 10-08-2008, 05:19 PM Hey is this the self-congratulations thread ...
I think Lou will, as he has said in the past, sign "the players who fit the best, not necessarily the best players".
I can see Lou signing Pando and Brylin and maybe making a smaller move on offense like Holik and perhaps going after a big free agent D-man like Redden or Stuart.
Going with that, I would like to see a youth scoring line. My lines would look something like:
Parise – Elias – Gionta
Vrana – Zajac – Bergfors
Pandolfo – Madden – Langenbrunner
Zubrus – Holik – Clarkson
Brylin, Rupp
Martin – Oduya
Redden/Stuart – Salvador
Mottau – White
Vishnevski or Greene
Brodeur - Weekes
Maybe Lou tries to trade away Vish and/or Gionta to get a centre for Elias (Gionta & Vish + for Marleau???).
It might not do much for the team during the regular season goal scoring wise but it might turn some of those games where the team lost by one goal into wins. More importantly, I could see it working in the playoffs.

yakitate304 10-08-2008, 06:48 PM I don't know if I made any posts about it, but I wanted Holik at the deadline, and thought he'd be a smart pickup for this season too. He's an absolute ******* to play against and has the toughness to break down situations like what happened in the playoffs last year.
Big#D 10-08-2008, 10:48 PM You're bragging about being 1/3?
I was just joking. Everyone around here seems to think that they need to show that they knew what they were talking about. At the end of the day anything any one of us says is just a guess. Sometimes we get it right, sometimes not. It's all luck and we should just be happy that we root for a team with a very good GM running the show.
