Last 14 years or so (starting olympics 94), Canada and Sweden has had some epic battles. If you look back at the 70s in the NHL, Sweden was first send to send a euro player, and also Canadians called the swedes, chicken swedes.
Is the Can-SWE rivalry bigger than we think?

Russian hockey fans don't dislike the Swedish team at all, there will never be a big rivalry there, it's only Canada for us.

Lugaid 10-07-2008, 05:07 PM Hard to say. I'd actually say we have quite a big rivalry with alot of teams, it all depends on how you define it.
Finland is of course our biggest rival as our neighbour and constant bickering of both our male populations, Canada is a rival since we've lost alot of finals to them, Forsberg got smashed against them, and they're a pain in the ass to face in general, even though I think it's mostly fan based on forums kind of rivalry. And obviously Russia is always a rival in everything since the Cold War-stuff and since the Soviet Ice Hockey days. So it's hard to say really.

Well, the last year WJC, it was between Canada-SWEDEN! Sweden beat the "fantastic" Russia in the semi.
Russia is overated as always! They whose said they donīt care about Sweden in icehockey must be dumb. Since 1990 Sweden has the same number of titles as Canada. itīs two more than Russia/Soviet Union. It seems Canadians and Russian live in the past when Soviet Union and Canada were dominating.

therealdeal 10-12-2008, 05:46 PM International hockey is a very small community, there are 5 or 6 teams that are right there with each other, every team doesn't want to win lose to any team, and every team has some sort of history against one another. When National pride is on the line, most every game is emotional, and lots is taken personally.
Does Canada have a healthy rivalry with Sweden? Yeah I would say so, is it the strongest rivalry for each country, depends on the date and the important of the game.

We'll see.
Russia and Canada have always had an advantage over the other nations in terms of age-restricted tournaments simply because we have so many more players to choose from.
Whereas, the other teams, like Sweden, Finland, and the Czechs, have alternating good teams and bad teams.
Open tournaments like the world championships and the Olympics can mitigate the lack of depth somewhat because you've got a good 20 year window to choose players from.
Until Sweden starts putting up Golds and Silvers in the WJC on a consistent basis, I find it hard to put them up as a fierce rival in that tournament.

I'm going on the basis of history.
Last year's Silver was the first Gold or Silver for Sweden in 12 years.
Like I said in my post (if you'd like to read it again), the smaller countries are much more inconsistent than the larger ones.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sweden is competitive next year if they have a lot of returnees (as they appear to be), but how many years in a row after that will they be competitive?
It has nothing to do with the quality of the hockey and everything to do with the quantity of players.
Could Sweden win the Gold? Sure, it's possible.
Will they win 4 or 5 in a row? Very unlikely. The very format of the tournament is against them.
I apologize if I'm not generating the appropriate amount of fear for your squad.
But historically, the only real rival at the WJCs has been Russia. Sweden has a ways to go to rewrite that particular rivalry, even if they have a quality squad for a year or two.
HalfOfFame* 10-14-2008, 05:32 PM If sweden is a rival with canada, then i think finland and russia should be too and why not czech republic... oh wait, what about USA?? And dont forget the slovaks! ahhhh..

Dgill 10-14-2008, 05:43 PM It doesn't matter really, Canada still produces the top crop of players in the world.
We have been making a mess out of the USA as of late in every level, same goes for Russia put aside last years World Championship. Sweden we only see every odd tournament for they are to inconsistent. Finland is always the darkhorse and always underrated.

If you are going by registered players and counting major tournament victories, than you would definetly have to include Womens World Championships and Olympics, because they do make up a considerable proportion of registered players, and if you're counting them than its somewhat of a landslide.
If you're not counting them, then you might as well ignore registered players. Just saying. :)

You do realize 1981 was the only year that Sweden has won a WJC right? Finland has 2 Golds (although in '87 we they were granted the Gold when Canada was disqualified for you know what) and Sweden is just now starting to come back as a threat in the hockey world. Remember the '90s when they never beat Canada? And they were always silver? That looks good compared to the '00s when they didnt play in the Gold Medal game until 2008. Even the Sedins got shellacked 6-1 in the '99 WJC semis.
Sweden was a good team last year and might be better this year, but keep in mind Canada has a few weapons on their side.
#1 Quinn is the coach not Hartsburg. That alone is an upgrade as Hartsburg was badly outcoached in the last 2 WJC
#2 Tavares is a year older, and contrary to sometimes popular belief, is the favourite in the 2009 draft
#3 Canada is playing on home soil, which is like a 4th forward out there
Sweden and Canada just might face off in the Gold Medal game, but history is against Sweden doing that
Tomas W 10-19-2008, 03:42 PM About the JWC, It's a bit now or "never"* for Sweden this or next year, when Markström, Hedman and Svensson-Pääjärvi & co is either overaged or playing in the NHL I think Sweden will maybe have a hard time to reach the finals again (a guess soley based on the fact that Sweden has that good juniors not very often, however you never know).
*more like "for quite a while"
Analyzer 10-20-2008, 03:16 PM Sweden has been able to produce solid players, their main problem was producing goalies who didn't completely suck ass. Before Lundqvist they had crap of le crap for a goalkeeper.
PEI Hockey 10-20-2008, 04:03 PM The most impressive part of Canada's domination at the WJC is that we consistently ice a team lacking many stars. Off the top of my head, some players who didn't or won't play when they could are:
Sidney Crosby
Luke Schenn
Andrew Cogliano
Sam Gagner
Patrice Bergeron
David Perron
Kyle Turris
And the list goes on. Canada would always win gold if we iced a full team.

1. Well let's see if Quinn if much better than Hartsburg. A question: Did Canada choose Hartsburg as their coach because his bad????
2. Is Tavares the favorite to the draft 2009??? No is ONE of the favorites. Sweden has HEDMAN who will fight for the top pick! Close race between them! Don't forget MSP who is EXCELLENT so far in SEL!
3. Well home soil isn't a very good thing. Remember WCH 2008???? Russia won not Canada.
4. Sweden will have a better team this year.

Mystique is something you have or you don't have. It's reverence and mystery mixed into one.
Russia has mystique because of the Soviet days, our style of play, our underachieving over the last 15 years, and the " Will Russia win or will they choke?" factor.
