He's a 7th defensemen by the looks of it on 525K according to nhlscap

Does this mean no festerling, salcido or mikkelson this season?

I imagine Nonis would have something to do with the claim

Big tough guy who will fight in every single game he plays. Not exactly great defensively...but a decent #7 with little room for development.

I don't understand this move. Is this a move for Iowa or Anaheim? Enforcers should be playing forward, not defense.

If you look at our defense our top-6 is set with Scotty, Prongs, Frankie, Husky, Klee and Montador. Festerling may be good enough to make the team but it does him no good watching every game in a suit. This guy sounds like a perfect place-holder d-man. If there's injuries though or someone's game goes to hell then one of those rookies will be called up.

Kind of reminds me of Jason Strudwick a bit. Decent depth player, but was likely 9th/10th on the Canucks depth chart and with Hordichuk now on the team not needed for his fighting. Good luck to him, hopefully he can crack the Ducks' roster and carve out an NHL career.

Looks like I was right. Festerling has been re-assigned and McIver looks like he'll be the 7th d-man.

Good move, replaced OD's toughness and young enough to improve on his skill

Burke and Carlyle felt Festerling was better off playing every night in Iowa than being the healthy scratch in Anaheim.

McIver will be a solid 7th d-man.

McIver better not get placed on Waivers by the Ducks because I see the Canucks re-claiming him.

So I can pretty much guarentee you he wont be playing for Iowa.

McIver is most definately not an enforcer.. He's tough and can hold his own in a mid-weight fight. He's a defensive dman most recognized for his excellent leadership. Will never be more then a #6 dman. Canucks probably could have kept him onboard as the #7. But sent him down in the hopes he would continue to develop, which he wont sitting in the press box.

Nice tough kid for 7th dman position! Had 26 fights last year! :yo:

Why you guys so excited about getting McIver, when you should have Ryan up instead of him?

Ryan cap hit > iver's (i think it 1.7 vs 525=1.2M)

Duck fans are probably allowed to have separate streams of thought to react to separate situations involving their teams.
Besides, Ryan doesn't play defense and McIver makes half as much as him.

This is the right move IMO. It is better for Festerling to get some minutes in the AHL than to sit in the press box.

And McIver sounds exactly like a Duck player. :yo:

McIver is a solid pick up, he has the talent of an AHLer but the ethic of an NHLer.. he is big and tough and has a lot of work left on his defensive play.

He is a decent depth dman. He can fight, but he can't do much else.

You guys will love this guy. He sticks up for his teammates and isn't afraid too mix it up. He doesn't really play big, but is chippy. He went after Iginla the other night and tried to draw him off his game.

Can't really expect anything more from a 7th defensemen.

My guess is that Festerling was kept up with the intention of playing him as a #6, but maybe they decided that both Klee and Montador should be every day players. So then they decided to give Festerling playing time instead of PB time.

Half the money, but (less than) 1/3 the cap hit.

Agreed. I was actually getting ready to post the same thing. They must have been impressed with Klee in Montador enough recently to see that Festerling is better off in the AHL right now, so they picked up a guy that will be a perfect 7th defensemen.

I just realized he was an 03 draft pick. Damn that was a stacked draft. For a second I thought Norm was still in the league.

not for the Canucks. After Kesler, that draft as beyond abysmal.

I have watched McIver play for the Canucks many times and he is absolutely terrible. He will fight anything on skates, but as far as talent and skill go, there is not much of it.

Wow, you should really focus on shoving more Topo Gigio's buffet down your throat and worry less about conversing on message boards.

How hilarious is it that he scored the game winner in OT against Luongo? You gotta love that!

Yeah, as soon as he scored, I knew someone would post a reply like this.

But seriously, don't expect to see anything like that again this season.

nobody is expecting much. I don't understand why people think we are. He's our 7th defensemen. Do you really think we expect a lot out of him when he will be in the pressbox most nights?

I'd want him a lot further down the depth chart than 7th Dman. At the moment he's a handy AHL call up with your 7th and 8th dmen are in use through injury to 2 of the top 6. If he's the 7th Dman he's going to see a lot more time than you'd like.

Ideally we'd have a Nik Lidstrom clone for d-positions 3-9. However, due to having two future HOFers on the blueline and the way that affects the salary cap, we're just fine with having a borderline NHLer who can manage a specific role in the #7 spot.

I have no problem with seeing him as a 7th defensemen. If someone gets hurt for an extended period of time they will call up one of the young guys (Festerling, Salcido, Mikkelson). If he has to play 1 out of every 10 games, no big deal. I'd rather have him sitting in the pressbox then one of the younger defensemen.

We've heard this all before about tough players coming to Anaheim and supposedly being worthless and they end up contributing and becoming legit NHL players. I trust Burke's judgment more then some random Vancouver fans

There were plenty of knowledgeable Nucks fans that didn't want to see him go. He's not as skilless as many in this thread make him out to be. Not to mention the fact that he's a great kid that'll drop them with anybody. Valuable depth with a cheap price tag.

Indeed, I saw plenty of Canucks fans not liking losing McIver for said reasons.

Young gritty D tend to play better for our Norris Trophy winning very gritty x-defenseman coach then they do for other teams. For example: Shane O'Brien played much better for Anaheim then he ever did for T.B.

But we really have no expectations here in Anaheim that he will become anything great...we did not lose anything in picking him up so it really doesn't matter.
