An interesting article during preseason of the 87-88 season.

For anyone that is wondering, that was the waiver draft where Lou selected two players who would be in europe this year, then drafted miracle on ice defensmen Jack O'Callahan, then proceded to make one of the european players exposed.

Hah, "Two days after he made the statement Lamoriello acquired George McPhee from the Winnipeg Jets..."

Made me laugh.

"But he took a big risk in sending Greg Adams, a talented center, and Kirk McLean, a goaltender, to the Vancouver Canucks for Patrik Sundstrom."

That one worked out.

"Unlike the problems on defense, the Devils have an excellent offensive first line, with Kirk Muller, the captain, as the center for Aaron Broten on the left and Pat Verbeek. These three players produced 214 points last year."

Damn straight.

The Devils used both of their rookie goaltenders. MARTIN BROEDER played the first two periods and allowed two goals on 23 shots, and MIKE DUNHAM played the last period and allowed two goals on 14 shots.

edit: Did that trade work out though? Kirk McLean was awesome for the Canucks and we had two good seasons and one good playoff from Sundstrom. I'm not saying it was a bad trade in the slightest, but I'd say it was a push.

It ended up being one of those trades that worked for both sides. And we got more than 2 solid seasons from Sundstrom - we got 4 before his career ended due to injury (and I'd say one awesome to the point of ridiculous playoff and one solid playoff).

Remember, Sundstrom was our top point getter in the 1988 playoffs.

Those two lines in 1988 may be our best top-6 ever.

Broten - Muller - Verbeek
Johnson - Sundstrom - MacLean

That's very comparable with

Elias - Arnott - Sykora
Brylin - Gomez - Mogilny
