It should be a really interesting game. I really hope they do well. I don't want to jinx it with a goal prediction.

I don't see why they have Brodeur riding the bench though. They should just have Clemmer in there to be the designated high fiver. Let Marty watch the game up with Lou.

He's already in Lowell.

I know but he hasn't been assigned there yet as far as I know. I would have had him stick around a bit to give him one last "shot" at ice time. Marty doesn't need to be sitting on the bench in any preseason game in which he doesn't start.

I really like our starting roster. If Salmela can bump Mottau out of there, I'd be a verry happy NJD fan. We need guys with a little more offensive flare and Anssi is the answer... for now. Greene deserves a legit chance this year and according to you guys, he's been playing good hockey this preaseason.

Once again, this isn't a knock on Mottau more then wanting to add a offensive weapon on our backend instead of another defensive d-men.

If the team decides to stick with the top five plus Greene and Salmela, I could see them rotating Salmela, Greene and Mottau in and out of the bottom two pairings to see who works with whom. Mottau would spend most of his time with White but I could see them trying both Salmela and Greene there to see how they work and what added contributions they could make to the team (offence) with White.

If they decide on Brookbank though, he's going to be in the lineup when they need some extra toughness and otherwise it will be Greene on the Oduya pairing with Salmela in the minors.

I seriously doubt we see Brookbank play any games for the Devils unless there are at least 2 defensemen injured at the same time.

If the team is afraid of waiving him to put him in Lowell, he will likely be the team's 7th D-man. I could see him playing in a few games against teams that have some toughness (like Philly).

I will be very disappointed if the team chooses to keep him and not both Salmela and Greene. The team really needs to develop skilled puck moving defencemen, if not for this year then for the future when they have other young guys coming in to replace the current veterans.

Me too. The nice thing (and the only nice thing) about radio play by play is you get a unique feel for who is contributing by how often and in what context you hear their name being called - unlike television where you're really focused more on the puck and the offense and sometimes miss the little things players contribute to the play.

I noticed last game I was hearing Salmela's name being featured quite a bit and in good ways (until he fumbled the powerplay at least).

I'm not only excited about possibly having him in the lineup this year, but the simple fact that he's getting this much playing time and is still in the lineup heading into the final 2 preseason games means he is at the very least pushing the guys in front of him to perform - and sometimes having someone nipping at your heels keeps you at the top of your game.

I'm feeling better and better about this defense each day - including feeling that Salvador is finally going to show everyone just how he is a perfect fit for this team.

Oduya takes his game to a new level this year, Salvador shines in his pit bullish ways, and Martin chips in more offense... if these things actually play out the way they should, this is going to be a great year for a defense that will no doubt be largely overshadowed by the offense.

They should be happy if another team picks him up since they won't have to pay him anymore. Why do they put so much stock in this guy? He was picked off waivers from Columbus only because White was injured and even then he was still a 7th-8th dman.

I think he's more skilled than a lot of people here give him credit for. He just hasn't put it together at the NHL level yet. He won the AHL version of the Norris trophy.

Columbus probably waived him thinking that no one would pick him up and that they could let him develop in the AHL for another year. It happens all the time at the end of the preseason before the regular season starts. Teams waive a bunch of players to assign them to the minors. Most of them pass through waivers and get assigned. Occassionally though another team take a chance and picks that person off waivers. Last year it was the Devils.

I  our full lineup this year

im liking it more and more as well, but i still would really like to see vrana worked in somehow. thatd mean its either clarkson or rupp that sits. its now or never with vrana and i just dont get why rupp gets the nod over him. this lineup is fully capable of rolling 4 lines. so whether vrana is bumped up to the 2nd or 3rd, or works with holik(who will def make him earn his stripes) and a talented forward in zubie, i really think it could be a good line. all rupp is gonna do is look for someone to pound.

Anssi is epic

Well it looks like what I projected may be true, we'll be going with 8 D-men and 13 forwards, Probably keeping Salmela and going with Vrana.

It sounds like Lou would prefer a 22 man roster with one extra forward and one extra d.

"You don't like to carry eight," GM Lou Lamoriello said. "The ideal situation is to carry two goalies, seven defensemen and 13 forwards. It's possible we could keep eight. We've done it before. We still have two exhibition games left."

http://www.nj.com/devils/index.ssf/2008/10/salmela_appears_to_have_earned.html

Edit: And more from Sutter in todays blog

http://www.nj.com/devils/index.ssf/2008/10/sutter_isnt_a_big_fan_of_nhl_g.html

When you get down to this, you know who your 12 forwards are. Who is going to be your 13th guy? We have nine defensemen. There are going to be decisions there, too. And I understand there are business decisions, too."

Petr Vrana and Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond appear to be battling it out for the 13th forward spot. Salmela seems to have convinced the Devils to keep him, but that would mean exposing Leach or other veterans like Sheldon Brookbank or Andy Greene to waivers.

"You look at how Sammy has played," Sutter said. "We may have to carry seven or eight guys here. That means one is going to be out of the mix. We've carried eight before. The more ideal situation is seven, but we may have to have eight (defensemen)."

last night they had some made for TV movie on MSG. All I could think was "This should be the Devil's preview game from the night before... and on the night before they should have televised the preseason game"

The preseason game would ahve got more of an audience than the Devils preview..... and the Devils' preview would have gotten more of an audience than the stupid movie

Alright, once again, I wasn't paying much attention, let's see if I can gather some thoughts (although there isn't that much to talk about, I really don't feel like talking at length about NHL players in preseason games.)

Samela had ups and downs, and I thought he was shaky at the beginning of the game, but that long PP stretch between the end of the 2nd into the 3rd, he was very strong on and it played very confidently. I don't remember what led to the Isles going on the rush in OT, but I thought he sucked defensively on that play, you have to do something except stand there like you're the exterior goalie. So, up and down, but I did like what I saw on the PP from him. (I also thought the PP was good later in the game.)

What is Clarkson doing out there, seems like he's channeling Avery. His actual hockey playing gets worse and worse when he does this. He got a TO behind the net, Roy-esque, and he just sat on the puck until Danis got back in the net. Yeech. Although he finally got his fight he had been looking for, he must have been real riled up because he clocked Witt, I think....

He can't play on the 3rd line if this is going to be his style of play. Gonna take penalties and make mistakes that lead to Pando and Madden taking penalties.

The second goal Weekes gave up was beyond horrible. All and all he was okay, and I guess you don't worry much when he's going to play 15 games. Just break even.

The first half of the game they played poorly, the last few minutes of the 2nd and the
3rd, they played very well. I liked the chippyness very much, even if it was a little over the top for a preseason game, it looks like they're not going to be deer in headlights this season. The midget fight was funny. Gionta was really pissy and ran an Isle along the boards in the 3rd.

Bobby is a dirtbag and it's funny.

The new deli stand is not bad. Anybody that's been in the building, does Tastes of Newark still exist upstairs?

I got a jersey done in the store, they ****ed the first one up, they succesfully did the second, but the name plate is like a cm off and those things annoy me. I can't complain because the jersey (I can't believe I actually bought one with the gay hem) was free and with my Devils Legion discount, the whole thing comes to $45, but if you have a real jersey, do not, I repeat do not, get it done there. Put it in a mailbox. Not that big a deal for me because it's a one year stopgap. (I've cursed Madden by getting one of his, he's done.) But the difference in quality of work between this one and my $300+ authentic, which is being retired, is unbelieveable.

Since you didn't see the game, they had a new in-game girl doing the job of say, like Greg T or Sid Rosenberg. Holy Samela she was beyond horrible, it was like she went to the George W. Bush School of Public Speaking. I think the little kids she was doing the contest promos for could have done a better job. She was not back for the 3rd, I think she will end up much like the Legend of Zelda... something so bad that you wouldn't believe it happened.... unless you were there.

Also went to the game. Weird game, Devils played very well in parts and generally looked completely disinterested in others.

Positives - unlike last year they demonstrated an ability to penetrate a coherent defensive scheme. Each of the lines created chances, they just couldn't finish. Defense helped create some chances as Samela played well, he was aggressive in the offensive zone moving all over which helped create space for the power play. He also joined the rush on a couple of occassions. On defense he was ok I think he was on ice for 2 goals against,. Oduya played very well and in addition to his goal had a near-assist off a beautiful pass.

Negatives - Power play hasn't jelled yet. Rolston seems to be thinking a little too much between pass and taking the shot. Shooting/finishing was a major disappointment, a ton of missed open nets. Isles didn't get a ton of chances, but most of their chances were pretty good.

The game was essentially decided by a god-awful flub by Weekes on the 2nd goal (think Pee Wee hockey goalie trying to catch a fluttering puck and missing it badly) and our inability to score on the powerplay. This was a pretty average Islander team with a number of key guys out and to lose to them (even in preseason) is a bummer.

A) Its not even like she was hot where we would be more inclined to let it slide.

B) WTF was that organist crap about? I screamed "D. NONE OF THE ABOVE" as my answer and everyone was hysterical laughing. The songs sucked big time. Where do they come up with this crap??

I was looking at the attendance from other games, and we were the second lowest tonight. That has to be directly attributed to the prices. We don't sell out because the tickets are too expensive as it is, what makes them think people are going to pay that money for a preseason game? The game prices should have been cut in half for the entire preseason (which should have been broadcasted in its entirety). Even then, its a lot of money for a preseason game. Then, you torture the people who actually do go by having an "organist" play crap music that no one wants to hear and make us listen to some priss who appeared to have arrived on the short bus. They should have done the youth hockey donation thing all preseason, charge $10, give $2 to charity, and be done with it. I don't think they care about preseason walkup because they make so much money off the clubs. And then 3/4's of them don't show up, and they don't even need to make extra food. Win-win.

I also don't think they're counting the freebies into the attendance, so it's probably not horrible, the 1500 they come short of other people's so-so preseason attendance just could be lack of effort. It's just another thing they **** up because they really don't give two ***** about the fans, unless you signed a 5 year contract to hand them $6,000 a seat a season.

He says Pah-reasy like greasy... and it pisses me off. Pa-reez-ay for the love of all that is sacred in hockey. There is room for interpretation however, Zach's dad pronounces it the canadian way, but Zach himself actually says it more like pah-reasy than pa-reez-ay. In TG's blog, he has a quote from Elias who said that the staff colored in the white on his gloves because they were supposedly "too white". Are you kidding me? Look at the pictures from the two games. Look at the difference.

Last game with white...

Without white...

Seriously now, was that necessary?

Bring back the white! Why can't he have white on his gloves anyhow? Stupid...

Patrik Elias failed to convert on two great chances from in front during the Devils' 5-on-3 power play at the start of the third period. He redirected the puck wide on the first one and redirected it behind goaltender Yann Danis on the second one, but the puck hit the inside of the right post and bounced out.

Elias jokingly blamed it on his gloves. The Devils' equipment staff had to use a marker to black out some of the white on them.

"They had to because they said they were too white," Elias said. "I had five points in two games and they had to change my gloves. I'm going to blame it on that."

It's the Devils, that's why. I'm surprised they didn't immediately shave his head years ago when he got that awful blond dye job, but I guess that would have been doing him a favor.

BTW, Lou had his feet up on the seats in front of him. :sarcasm:

I may have missed it, but just in case no one posted it, Anssi Salmela lead the team in SOG with 4 and was second in ice time to Paul Martin at 21:16. He had one assist but was a minus two. Still, I think he has made the team.

This looked like our starting lineup, with the exception of Marty, of course, for the season. Maybe Mottau or Andy Greene starts ahead of Brookbank. I think Petr Vrana should be in there instead of Mike Rupp.

BTW, Holik won 10 of 13 face-offs, so the pressure to win big draws doesn't always fall on John Madden's shoulders.

I hope we can beat the Rangers and Islanders this season. Last season was a total disaster. At least we should beat them at The Rock.

I believe there is still midget wrestling. When Comrie and Gionta squared off, would that be considered "midget boxing?" At least Gio picked on someone his own size this time. Usually, he goes after heavyweights. He is truly fearless. Or dumb as sin. LOL Take your pick.

We lost to the AHL Isles?! With our full lineup? Thank God this game didn't mean anything...

And our PP has continued to suck. They really need to work on that this upcoming week before the opener.

They looked good in the second half of the game, they just didn't put the puck in the net. It'll come. Although I'm not sure I like the 5 forward idea that was being screwed around with during the game.

Rolston will earn respect, or people will get hurt.

Haha. Did you really tell him about the church? I remember mentioning the MMMC to Mottau when I met him and he looked legitimately worried. So Jerry, I guess it's my fault if Mike Mottau has nightmares about you.

No, I just told him he had a lot of people rooting for him to make the team!

i was sitting in Sec. 13 and saw that too! lol

i am back on track to being fully outfitted for Friday night. i bought a new scarf from the Den.

all i have to do is fix my helment and i'm not sure how.

On the game, I love Bad Eggs. I mean why was he in front of the net on the PP in the 3rd period? I dunno but it was great to see he has that much confidence to try it. Unfortunately he didn't stand up on the blueline during OT and ended up paying. His skates/legs were also the reason for the 2nd goal against, so it wasn't his best night luck wise. Our PP obviously needs a lot of work, but there are 5 full days off to work on it before it really matters.

The best thing about His Holiness' mistakes is that the proper method can be taught.

Thats also how it was pronounced in Lowell with his brother Jordan.

ILikeItVeryMuch was there tonight with his extremely annoying horn and he seemed to be friends with her. She came up at the end of the 2nd period and ended up sitting up there with him for awhile...

And she was wearing a sweater that my great grandmother would probably wear...

Not a big fan of her at all!
Hey I think she did great, and she was the reason I got onto the ice last season for one of the tricycle races. Very cool girl, no reason for the territory battle and cattiness, haha.
And my horn is absoultey legendary. Look for me in 106 Row 4, youll hear me. It was a really bad idea to start pregaming for a preseason game at 1PM yesterday though, we spent 5 hours at Scullys.
