From sportsnet:

Wayne Gretzky confirmed on Hockeycentral at Noon on Monday that he will not be the executive director of Team Canada at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver.

That does not mean however that Gretzky will not be associated with the team in some capacity, possibly as the head coach.

Unless Gretzky and his 'yotes make great strides in the next year or so, I can't see him as a head coach for Team Canada. Maybe an assistant?

well i knew that when he became coach of PHX in the beginning that he wanted to be the coach for team canada eventually. He wants to be on the bench! i think that he CAN be the head coach for team Canada, and i also think that PHX team will really surprise some people as early as this season! Would be great to see him on the Bench in Vancouver!

Of course he wasn't going to chose the players, last time he brought Bertuzzi, Doan and Draper instead of Crosby, E. Staal and Spezza. He did win the gold medal in 2002 and the World Cup in 2004, however, we gotta give him that.

I think they should swap out the management and coaching teams for every Olympics.

Give them a fresh start.

4 years is a long time.

Just put the Red Wings' brass in charge of the team, top-to-bottom.

I think it's a bad idea to have a head coach of an NHL team as the executive director, both jobs are highly time consuming, so this will work out better for both.

I don't have an issue with Gretz being on the bench however, just not as head coach. Generally Canada has 2 or 3 assistant coaches, and I doubt he would be a problem. As long as the head coach is Babcock, or someone along those lines, Gretz can still be a part of the team.

Hoping they name Yzerman and Lemiuex to the exec directors committee, Yzerman is the obvious one, but I think it would be nice to have another legend at the helm.

I just hope they pick the best players NOW and not based on seniority.

Gretzky as coach or GM has never impressed me. Canada would probably be better without him.
