stratedge 09-09-2008, 08:08 PM Hey,
I'm thinking about going to the Oilers/Ducks game in early October since I'll be in L.A. for a conference at that time. Was wondering if someone could give me a picture of what to expect? The game is Wed Oct 15 at 7PM PT.
1) What's parking like at the Honda Centre (i.e. how early do you have to show up to get a spot and how much does it cost)?
2) What's it going to be like to drive from downtown L.A. to the Honda Centre to make it there by 6:30PM on a Wednesday? I've driven around the area before and faintly remember that the ducks arena was next to a major freeway, but I also remember the traffic sometimes being nuts during rush hour.
3) What's it like to get a ticket to a game like that? I'm from Edmonton so I'm used to giving up unborn children for nosebleed seats.
Thanks in advance.

1) I like to watch the movies near the Honda Center because the parking is always free. ;) Go get some food at one of the restaurants. I believe parking at the Honda center is like 15 bucks.
2) Stay away from the 405. Take the 110 to the 91 freeway to the 5 south. Get off at Katella.
3) Check out ticket exchange on the Ducks site.

Are they still doing the thing where if you eat at one of the restaurants you get the free shuttle ride? If so, OP should definitely do that. Go to Chili's or something.
Lyons71 09-10-2008, 01:30 AM I park at the Car Dealership thing just north of the pond. Free and about 1/2 mile walk.

I think they stopped that. When I looked into it for a playoff game they said the bus stopped a year ago.
Sevat 09-10-2008, 03:17 AM Expect the Ducks to lose and you'll be fine.
Mr Sakich 09-10-2008, 07:32 AM stratege, my wife and i are in LA and will be at that game as well. We are buying lower bowl tickets.
Question for the locals, should we risk scalpers or buy online before we fly to LA?
Spankatola Jamnuts* 09-10-2008, 10:43 AM Scalpers are fairly rare, at least in my experience.
Twindad 09-10-2008, 10:58 AM Scalpers are fairly rare, at least in my experience.
True, I don't think I have ever seen one come to think about it.
As to the OP:
Parking is easy, may cost a little, but easy.
The drive from LA will not be fun, I suggest you leave LA early, say 4 PM or so, I don't drive that so maybe someone else can give you a better time frame.
I would say you can get a ticket but try on-line as someone stated.
kducks 09-10-2008, 11:24 AM True, I don't think I have ever seen one come to think about it.
There is one guy that stands right next to the Stanley Cup Way sign at the entrance to the Ponda, I see him everytime I go.
I park on side streets off of Cerritos to save on parking since we have a half season and parking is 15 bucks now. Leave early from LA because no matter what freeway you take, you are going to get stuck in traffic on a Wednesday evening. Craigslist is always a good bet for Ducks tickets if you can't get them from ticketmaster.
Ducks 09-10-2008, 11:35 AM Scalpers are fairly rare, at least in my experience.
There is a group of scalpers in front of JT Schmidt's like every game.
hockeymistress 09-10-2008, 12:47 PM The advice you've received so far is all good. I sent you a PM with some other details. I've been a season ticket holder for a few years and have gone to games in Edmonton also - you have nothing to worry about comparatively!
H.
stratedge 09-11-2008, 03:27 PM Thanks for the help, Ducks fans. Very much appreciated, hopefully the hospitality is the same when I show up in my Oilers jersey. ;)

interesting...i found the opposite to be true. the kings fans were awesome to our little Oilers group, even when we were being loud and rowdy, they didn't have problems...ducks fans, on the other hand, were hostile towards us and had beer thrown along with a bunch of expletives said.

I'm guessing you were being dicks. Groups of visiting fans tend to be more brave that way.
Also, I've attended hundreds of Ducks games, I always sit in the section where opposition fans typically buy their seats, and I've never seen beer thrown at anybody.

This is sound advice. I might add looking into the Metrolink depending on where you are staying. If you are staying in the OC/Anaheim area and travelling into Downtown for your work, this would be the cheapest and the quickest. If you are staying in Downtown this probably isn't going to work because the last trains leave around 9pm I believe but feel free to look. www.metrolinktrains.com. The train station is at Anaheim stadium about a block or two from the Honda center. If you do decide to do this and want some help PM me. I ride the trains a lot.
The 5 freeway from Downtown LA going south on a weekday is absolutely horrendous. Avoid it at all cost. It'll probably take about a litte more than an hour the route he gave you above.
I might add that the parking at the Honda Center is a nightmare to get out of. So finding one of the other places to park is ideal unless you don't mind. I know I parked at an office down the road before.
I wouldn't worry about counterfeits from scalpers but considering you are coming at the beginning of the season I would advise you to buy tickets ahead of time. You never know. Craigslist, stubhub and ebay are good locations. I have NEVER paid above face value for a ticket to a Ducks game. Including playoffs.
You'll be fine. This isn't LA. Just don't be a dick.
Oh boy... you need to be a bit more aware of your surroundings. I've seen plenty of stuff happen at both places. And I have been to LOTS of Ducks games where the Kings aren't playing and seen plenty of nonsense. In LA you'll find a few guys trying to be hardasses and in Anaheim you seem to run into immaturity. Like 18 year olds that seem to not know a whole lot about the team or game and will talk crap. I've observed this on multiple occasions. As well as a couple of double middle fingers from some 16 year old girls that was completely unprovoked. I was with my gf at the time. I just said back "I know where you can stick those but you could probably fit about 30 more up there".
To the OP: You aren't going to get much outside of name calling and maybe the random tough guy (unlikely). If somebody gives you the finger, just ask them if they are just showing you how many Cups the Ducks have one! Oh and the ushers there are actually pretty nice. I've run into a couple of bitter ones at Kings games but for the most part the ushers there and at Anaheim stadium are very helpful and nice. I have watched them replace spilled beers for people on mutliple occasions at both places. One time a guy was diving for a puck that went over the glass (Kings fan I might add) and another at an Angels game when a kid accidentally kicked on over just as somebody go to his seat. You'd never see that at Staples or any other sports venue in the LA area.
Benny Lava 09-12-2008, 06:52 PM that's the thing, we weren't. it was me, my mom, my sister, my brother and his gf. my sister is 10 and my mom wouldn't have allowed me to act up
I've got a hard time believing you had beer thrown at you while you were quietly sitting in your seat watching the game. Like Haha, I've never seen beer (or anything, for that matter) thrown at anyone. You might get a little ribbing, but unless you're being an obnoxious *******, people won't cuss and throw stuff at you.
Sniper Archetype 09-12-2008, 06:59 PM I'm going to a Ducks home game (as a Sharks fan) in late October with about 9 friends.. Should I expect there to be a bunch of "tough guys"? We will be loud and rowdy, but we're not immature (we're all 20-22), so I don't see us initiating anything. Are the fans gonna be dicks though?
hockeydemon05 09-12-2008, 07:07 PM I've been to the Staples Center more then the Pond (Preseason games at the Center are free for my cousin. Played for the JR. Kings for a while and they had a lot of promotional events), but at both places you'll get some ribbing if you're being a dick. L.A. probably has more drunks, while Anaheim has some immature fans.
There are always the few occurrences of random **** happening even if you aren't being a dick, rare but that happens everywhere.
Never seen stuff thrown at the Pond, saw one Yote's fan get it on the back of the head with a beer during the Pre-Season game in LA when Roenick got injured. He deserved it though (the fan).

The ushers at the Staples Centers are pretty nice, at least the ones I've seen (during Laker - Sun games). A few times (back when tickets were crazy hard to get) my families seats would get split up, but the ushers did all they could to seat us together. My dad actually became really good friends with one of them, turned out he worked at the same company as my dad too.

I'm plenty aware. Middle fingers...? Whatever. Like I said, I've never seen anything. You're probably making yourself a target with your behavior.
arinkrat* 09-12-2008, 07:53 PM I haven't seen major confrontations either. There have been a few instances where I've seen a couple of people escorted out by ushers or in one case an fan from an unnamed Canadian team was so drunk he was escorted out by Anaheim P.D. Long walk home....

I've had problems with both Wings and Kings fans drunk in the parking lot, but that was after the game, and I was as guilty as they were if I'm honest.
Overall, from my narrow perspective, I'd say that the Pond is probably among the safest arenas in the league to be an opposing fan (excluding places like Phoenix and Florida, and any place else where there aren't any people there).
drivelikejoewho 09-12-2008, 09:01 PM I'm plenty aware. Middle fingers...? Whatever. Like I said, I've never seen anything. You're probably making yourself a target with your behavior.
If you are plenty aware, then why did you say "this isn't LA" in your previous post? Somehow this is an LA thing?
I'm making myself a target? I was walking through the concourse and there were people chanting "lets go kings" and I happened to walk by them at the same time I pass these girls with my jersey on and they thought it was necessary to flick me off and tell me LA sucks. Your right it is my fault though and you show your true colors by defending that behavior and admitting to being part of the problem. Are you "guilty" as you say below or have you "never seen anything" as you say above?
I've had problems with both Wings and Kings fans drunk in the parking lot, but that was after the game, and I was as guilty as they were if I'm honest.
Like I have said, I have been to the Pond numerous times over the years (plenty of non-Kings games) and was a Kings season ticket holder up until last year. You are also more likely to see this type a crap at Staples when the Kings are playing Colorado or Detroit.
emagdnim 09-12-2008, 09:05 PM I've got a hard time believing you had beer thrown at you while you were quietly sitting in your seat watching the game. It wasn't when we were sitting haha, it was when we were leaving. it happened on the concourse as we were stepping out. it was the game that went to the shootout and sam made giggy look silly...given the circumstances, a few high 5's with Oilers fans made the ducks fans go nuts
Spankatola Jamnuts* 09-13-2008, 01:15 AM If you are plenty aware, then why did you say "this isn't LA" in your previous post? Somehow this is an LA thing?
Much more so than in Anaheim. I don't think anyone would dispute that.

The delineation between what I was talking about in the first post and the second is clear. So the answer is both.

Meh, just a bad experience I guess. I can tell you from years and years of attending games at the Ponda that it's not a regular occurrence.

what section is this? I am an oiler fan and would prefer to sit where people are used to seeing other teams' fans.
Spankatola Jamnuts* 09-14-2008, 06:57 PM Any of the top tier sections. Just check the cheap seats. There also tends to be gaggles of opposition fans surrounding the runway the visiting team uses.
But seriously, there's not going to be a problem.
duke of new york 09-17-2008, 01:10 AM I would have said stay away from the 5 and take the 110 to the 405...
You can always check sigalert.com and just see for yourself which freeways are running well
drivelikejoewho 09-18-2008, 01:04 PM Much more so than in Anaheim. I don't think anyone would dispute that.
I would. I go to both places and have seen just about the same amount of stuff happen at both. Time to get of the high horse.
Again, flipping you off.... Grow a bag.
It was a testament to the immaturity I have seen there. Nothing more, nothing less. My feelings weren't hurt.
The delineation between what I was talking about in the first post and the second is clear. So the answer is both.
Yes because it would be absurd to think somebody causing problems in the parking lot could be causing them in the arena as well.
Look I am not trying to turn this into a pissing contest but you make it seem like any opposing fan at Staples is going to be subjected to inappropriate behavior. That just isn't the case. I think the cases of this are minimal at both places and in LA's case the fans that are harassed the most are Detroit's. And that is because they are the most abrasive and obnoxious.
arinkrat* 09-18-2008, 05:04 PM I would have said stay away from the 5 and take the 110 to the 405...

The 110 to the 91 to the 57 might be better. The 405 takes you too far south.
Spankatola Jamnuts* 09-18-2008, 05:11 PM I would. I go to both places and have seen just about the same amount of stuff happen at both. Time to get of the high horse.
I go to both places too, and I haven't. I think people's experiences here support my theory. No high horse, just an educated opinion. No need to get defensive.

Lord.

No I didn't. I just said that incidents were more common. You got defensive because you're one of the endless message board sissies that feels the need to defend things that have nothing to do with them, even going so far as to make up a context to which you could take offense.
Mr Sakich 10-11-2008, 11:13 PM thanks for the help guys. I got some upper bowl seats and will be cheering on the oilers on the 15th. I don't drink and will be with my wife so we aren't going to cause trouble, just hockey fans

I'll be there on the 15th too. FYI there is free parking on Harris Ct. off of Cerritos Ave around the corner from the Ponda. Douglass Street (which the Ponda is on)curves around and under the freeway and becomes Cerritos. Not too far to walk and saves you 15 bucks.
drivelikejoewho 10-13-2008, 05:24 PM No I didn't. I just said that incidents were more common. Incidents are more common at Staples unless somebody runs into you in the parking lot of the Pond.
I'm only defending it because you flat out made BS claims. I think it is unfair that people like you make it seem like Staples is a bad place and like you are going to a Raider game. Just like if I made an absurd statement about the Pond you or somebody else would refute that. As far as sissies go, takes one to talk crap from a keyboard.
I had season tickets for 3 years, I would guess that I might know more about what goes on at Staples then you. But you have an agenda so I guess that doesn't matter. You say educated opinion, I say uninformed. I don't see how you could have an "educated opinion" on the subject when you've probably gone to at most 4 games a season at Staples. In the past, I've gone to plenty of games at the Pond that the Kings weren't playing in on top of the Kings' 4 games there.
And I have no problem with the middle finger that was flung my way by a 16 year old wench but I am guessing the Jesus loving families walking the concourse probably do. Be carefull at Staples, you might get lynched! :sarcasm:
For what it's worth, I like the ushers at Anaheim Stadium and the Pond. They are much nicer than the red coats. I've seen them go out of their way to help people. The most rude worker at an arena I have ever encountered was in Phoenix. The lady berated me for driving their housing prices up and when she was done I told her I was just visiting but I won't anymore.
Mooseduck 10-13-2008, 06:15 PM Tell us more about ushers replacing split beers at Angel Stadium and Honda Center.

Benny Lava 10-13-2008, 06:24 PM Tell us more about ushers replacing split beers at Angel Stadium and Honda Center.

I've actually never seen that at the Ponda, but I've seen it happen many times at Angel Stadium, most recently at game 2 against the Red Sox.
Mooseduck 10-13-2008, 06:32 PM Wow, that's service.
So does the usher go and get it for you?
Benny Lava 10-13-2008, 06:50 PM No, you just have to go back to wherever you bought it from and get it refilled. The guy at the Red Sox game was walking up the aisle and his tray with a beer in it got hit by a beach ball and knocked it over. Some guy told him to go take it back and tell them what happened. He came back two minutes later with a full beer.
Spankatola Jamnuts* 10-13-2008, 06:59 PM Incidents are more common at Staples unless somebody runs into you in the parking lot of the Pond.

You're assuming that I'd be like you and get upset that you don't like the arena the team I like plays in. I don't care. I've encountered both friendly and rude ushers at both places. You seriously need to nut up.

drivelikejoewho 10-15-2008, 12:24 PM That's me. Parking lot terror. Boy, you sure never like to blow things out of context to have something to get upset about.
You just don't get it buddy. I am not the least bit upset. It is just a tad hypocritical to say that you are likely to see obnoxious or behaviour at a Kings game implying that Kings fans are more likely to behave that way (those are generally the people that go to Staples after all) and then you go on to say..
I've had problems with both Wings and Kings fans drunk in the parking lot, but that was after the game, and I was as guilty as they were if I'm honest.
Again....remember that time you got all sad because some kid gave you the finger? This is like that. You're a baby. Yeah I remember that time. Very traumatic. I am still dealing with the effects to this day.
You are giving advice to people from out of town. Something I completely disagree with and have spent much more time at games than you. Who would have the more accurate account? Then you go on to admit that you "were as guilty" as some of the obnoxious fans that cause problems. It isn't a stretch to think that you might be contributing to that.
What?
I was saying that it is possible, just slightly possible that there a some people that go to Ducks games (you know the conservative OC family) just might have a problem with people extending their middle finger. You know the people that complain to the usher because they heard a 4 letter word. Why don't you extend your middle finger next time you go to a game right by a family and see how they feel about it.
You're assuming that I'd be like you and get upset that you don't like the arena the team I like plays in. I don't care. I've encountered both friendly and rude ushers at both places. You seriously need to nut up.
I didn't assume anything. My point there was I don't have an agenda to try and piss you off or piss off Ducks fans by making false statements. My response originally and still is to rebut your statement that more "fan incidents" happen at Staples. That is simply not true. It may be your opinion but in my opinion, you are misinformed because you don't go to that many games (at least at Staples) and I have been to both places quite a bit. Considering you have admitted to being "as guilty" as they other parties, you can downplay that all you want but I my opinion makes it clear you were making a slight at Kings fans with no basis except your (uninformed) opinion.
Maybe it's you.
What are you 3 years old? You deserve at least 20 atomic situps.
All the emo hyperbole was your doing, and indicates your state of mind. Not mine.
Emo hyperbole huh? I think you are the only one getting emotional buddy. Go put on a sweater and listen to a Sunny Day Real Estate record. Like I said before, I simply don't like LA, the Kings and Staples getting a bad wrap by people like you who don't even go there and simply spout off inaccuracies.
drivelikejoewho 10-15-2008, 12:31 PM Wow, that's service.
So does the usher go and get it for you?
At the Pond, I saw a guy fall over trying to catch a puck and his beer literally exploded. He wasn't a Ducks fan (forgot what team they were playing - not Kings) and an usher came down to see if he was alright. He asked if he wanted another beer and the fan left and came back with a full one. At Anaheim stadium, I've seen it a few times. One time I was standing on the outfield patio thing and a guys kid walked by and knocked over his extra beer that was on the ground. The usher was standing right there and took him to get a new one. I have also seen it happen in the seats similar to what happened at the hockey game but a foul ball instead.
Some of the ushers at the Pond can be jerks when they play the Kings though. Not a lot but they like take it personally or something. I got the bartender to say "lets go Kings" to the beer line because she said nobody in Anaheim ever tips them (this was over 4 years ago). Not that I think it is necessary to tip those guys but I thought it was funny.
Spankatola Jamnuts* 10-15-2008, 01:12 PM I am not the least bit upset.
Course not.
It is just a tad hypocritical to say...
So?
Yeah I remember that time. Very traumatic. I am still dealing with the effects to this day.
Apparently.
Given your endless cycle of responding to something that supposedly doesn't bother you, I'd say you do rather seem to have a vested interest.
The parking lot incidents I'm referring to (there were 3) didn't factor into my overall assessment of relative safety. In the aggregate, I have seen many, many more incidents at Staples, towards all fans, than I have at the Pond. Other than the stuff involving myself, I can recall 2 instances (one fist fight and one game-long shouting harassment-type) in hundreds of games over 15 years. At Staples and the Forum, I can think of about 20, in the maybe 30 games I've been to in LA. None of which involved me. Smaller sample as you've been very desperate to point out, but many many more problems. You can think of me as uninformed if it makes you feel better, but it doesn't make it true.
PS - I didn't count random comments or the dreaded middle finger.
Look - the games in LA are unpleasant for a lot of reasons. 90% of that is the fans. Sorry it bugs you. It would probably bug me too. Hey - time is a river. Uh, we're all god's bros. Hare krishna, etc. etc. world without end. There.

Steve Winwood FTL
Spankatola Jamnuts* 10-15-2008, 01:29 PM Is that Steve Winwood? I had a boss that said that all the time. Usually while leaning over my desk and flexing his triceps.
Pwnasaurus 10-15-2008, 01:43 PM Is that Steve Winwood?
I'm sure he stole it from some old ****er like E.E. Cummings or whatnot. Cummings lol.
As a side note, maybe I'll drink more heavily than usual and see if the Ducks play any better or at least that I perceive that it way tonight.
Defgarden 10-15-2008, 01:49 PM I haven't noticed a huge difference in arenas. Statistically, there may be more incidents at one place over the other, but I certainly haven't seen it. I've seen incidents at Staples and Ponda, though not a great deal.
I think most people are fine, so long as they don't provoke anything. There may be some heckling, but it's usually in good fun (or at least not worth responding to). If there are serious issues with other fans during the game, the ushers are almost always pretty responsive.
That's just my view, and I could be wrong.

I'll be aboard that train as well.
Obobo, get ready for some more love...
I expect a much stronger effort, a "we deserve to win this one" comment or two, and then a shootout loss. But, I suppose this should be in the game night thread...

It's awesome how easily amazed I get when drinking...like that skating happens in general and such...

I said it does bother me that people give LA a bad wrap. Or did you fail to read that 8 times? I just said I am not mad about it. A bit of a difference. I am not wincing in anger as I type this. But yes I don't like it when people try and make it seem like a Kings game is like a Raiders game or anything close to that.

So out of 30 games you've been to you've seen 20 incidents that "factor into your overall assessment of relative safety"? I call absolute BS. I went to over 30 games last season alone and saw maybe 3 or 4 fights at the most. The only one I can distinctly remember off hand was at a game against Nashville.
PS - I didn't count random comments or the dreaded middle finger.
You are the one that lives in the conservative Jesus loving mecca of OC. Those are the people that care about obscenities and middle fingers.. not me. All I can say is I got a few nasty looks from people as soon as I made my comment back to that little wench. And I have seen on countless occasions, people complaining to the ushers at the Pond about obscenity. And I'm talking "get of your knees ref, your blowing the game" type of comments.
Look - the games in LA are unpleasant for a lot of reasons. 90% of that is the fans. Sorry it bugs you. It would probably bug me too. Hey - time is a river. Uh, we're all god's bros. Hare krishna, etc. etc. world without end. There.
Well if they are so unpleasant then I would imagine you would've stopped going. But you do keep going to the games so I'd assume they aren't as unpleasant as your are trying to suggest. So again, complete BS and you have an agenda.

Mr Sakich 10-16-2008, 12:35 AM thanks for the advice guys. Maybe to return the favor, I can offer something to you guys.
Before the game, we ate a nearby diner called Angelos ( 511 S State College). Beer was real cheap, burgers were huge, and the best chile dog I have had in a long time.

Any problems?

I was at the game too. My co-worker gave me free tickets. I saw nothing. Heckling in the hallway, but that's nothing.

Yet there was probably some jeckylling in the causeway I'll wager.

They changed the pretzels from traditional shape to braids.
It was terrifying.
