Just saw it in the Star Ledger. Russo is leaving WFAN. They did not talk much about hockey but they did help make sport talk on radio what it is today.

Yeah uh, weren't they part of the whole thing of people *****ing about a hockey game being the last event at Yankee stadium?

Good riddance to Froot Loops. While the pair were instrumental in the increase in radio sports talk, Russo's shtick has worn thin and he was frequently irritating. Glad to see Mike stick around, although it will be important to see who he gets to sit in the booth with him most days.

These days, I much prefer Kay's program on 1050. His team is much more entrertaining and they cover more hockey than M & MD.

Good riddance, that show was the epitome of everything I hate about New York sports.

It is unfortunate that Russo was the one who left though, Francesca is an unbelievably arrogant dbag.

I consider Michael Kay a worse version of Hitler. You couldn't pay me to listen to that dolt.

It will be interesting to see whom they will pair with Mike. I won't hold my breathe for any increased hockey talk, though. :(

Mike is going to go solo, but they said that he will not be alone in the booth at all times.

If you were hoping for more hockey talk, the wrong guy left. Russo was more willing to talk about hockey, Mike basically ignores it.

Plus, I don't understand why hockey fans clamor for these guys to do so. Benigno talks hockey during the season, as does Boomer during the mornings, and so does Sommers in the evenings. Marc Malusis in the overnights also will talk pucks. But they're not going to make it the backbone of their show. Why? Because it's (at best) the 4th most popular sport in town.

New York's a baseball town, they're going to talk about it basically 365 days a year whether we like it or not. And I don't mind it.

Hahaha I can't stand that guy either. What's his deal anyways, doesn't do Yankee road games that aren't the Sox because his 3 listeners on 1050 would get lonely? Please.

When my co workers want to watch Yankee games, I say, "Fine, under one condition; THE MUTE BUTTON" they all always happily agree.

Russo has been here for a long time. I was never that crazy about him either but he was hilarious when he would get excited and start raving about something. Rumor is he might be going to Sirius so all you Maddog fans can go listen to him there. LMAO
And does anybody really listen to ESPN NY ?

If you've listened to them over the years, Mike has huge respect for the Devils organization and especially Lou. Chris has been the only one to knock the Devils for being boring, which he was able to surmise with his vast wealth of hockey knowledge.

Meanwhile the Devils, Rangers, Islanders all had games the previous night.

:dunno:

Each their own of course. Don LaGreca is the better draw for me anyhow but Kay can be funny. At worst, his rants are no more irritating than Mad Dog's, and at best he can be pretty insightful. IMHO, despite his Yankees bias, he does a good job of showing respect to all NY sports.

They're Rangers fans, it's natural to hate the Devils. What did you expect, for them to be rubbing us off with praise?

And they're not that bad with the hate anyway.

sorry, but Beningo has crucified the team and us fans ruthlessly and cowardly over the years. Including last season. I met him briefly once and had to laugh at him, a simple little puke.

I expect him to talk about the Devils as he does about the Giants, Yankees and Nets since he is a Jets, Mets and Knicks fan. He goes out of his way to spew hatred towards us. I don't listen to WFAN talk radio any more so maybe he has mellowed out?

I've listened to him nearly every day during the summer because, like me, he's a Mets fan and I like to hear the baseball talk on the station. He spews no hatred towards the Yankees at all, and while he was at Giants training camp earlier this week, he had nothing bad to say about the Giants, actually putting the Cowboys down more.

During the postseason series between the Devs and Rangers, Benigno had John Madden on and was respectful. Earlier in the year, he made a trip out to the Rock and had nothing but respectful things to say about the new arena and the organization.

Never ever listened to those knuckleheads, but you gotta respect a guy like MadDog who was nothing more than a hot-head caller on the show back in the day. They decided to give him a job in radio and the rest is history. Why the hell doesn't that happen to me? Probably because I try to bring factual information into my calls. That apparently doesn't sell though.

edit: nevermind. Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Beningo)has set me straight.

Same here. If I want hockey info, I'll come here. But these two were fantastic if you weren't looking for hockey. Were they arrogant and sometimes rude? Yes. But they knew their football and their baseball and kept you entertained at the same time. And I mean, lets be honest, hockey isn't the most popular sport in the area (how could some of us forget the fact that Celts-Hawks outdrew a Rangers playoff game). Personally, I liked Russo better because he's more of an entertainer and some of his anti-Yankee monologues are golden, but I'm glad that Mike's staying on.

Somers is mostly shtick and he has claimed his respect for the Devils on numerous occasions, he was even at Daneyko night with a Dano jersey on.
Beningo is garbage, and I can say that even as a Jets fan myself, remember how he was ragging on Devils fans for there being seats available for the Rangers series the day of the games? Well when seats were available for games 3 and 4 at MSG the day of the games I called up FAN and they refused to put me through.

I guess I have a soft spot for these guys become I'm a broadcasting major and I want to have a job in radio.

I already work at my college radio station so I sorta look up to those guys in a way. I'm sure they're dicks, but to be honest with you, I really could care less how they act outside the studio. They're really not celebrities or anything.

I think if you're invited you should at least pretend to show some respect in public. If he bought tickets, that's another thing.

Sid Rosenberg was great when he used to show up at CAA. I'm sure he really wanted to be there... there were probably 10 hookers and a pound of blow waiting for him outside, but he sucked it up.

Sirius XM Radio Inc. said Tuesday it hired sports talk personality Chris "Mad Dog" Russo, former star of the "Mike and the Mad Dog" show, for a five-year contract to headline a new sports talk channel available on both Sirius and XM satellite radio.

Sirius channel 123 and XM channel 144 will relaunch as Mad Dog Radio, a reformatted channel that will include sports talk, interviews, news and broadcasts of sporting events.

Russo will host the channel's anchor program, "The Mad Dog Sports Show," which will begin airing on Sept. 15.
