DevFan-RU- 08-15-2008, 01:28 AM Now, we are all Devils fans who are passionate about our favorite team in our own ways. Some of you have been fans since the beginning, while others (like myself) have only recently seen the "light".
So my question is this: What kind of Devils fan are you?
Do you go out and paint your face red and go crazy with some Devil horns?
Do you sport a Christmas jersey with signatures from the entire 1990 team?
Do you dress your vehicle up with Devils logos and flags? Or do you merely have a bumper sticker or license plate holder?
Do you sport the logo proudly on a daily basis? Or do you keep your passions hidden?
These questions relate to your fanaticism at games, and even in your day to day life.
fortheloveof666 08-15-2008, 01:44 AM I have quite a few things in my room, but I don't necessarily fit into any one choice above.
I'm always at the game with a beer in my hand, I do get vocal but it's mostly me just making comments or having discussion with the people around me.
If I do get enough drinks in me, I do loooooove to talk **** to opposing teams fans though. I dunno what choice to go with. :dunno:
guyincognito 08-15-2008, 01:54 AM I can think of other types too....
the Cheerleader and the Coach are two other predominant types. I'm the coach, but I wrecked my voice with years of screaming, now it's more along the lines of constant talking.

Just pick option 3 and sit over there...
:sarcasm:
But, you don't have to vote if you don't want, but you can describe what kind of fan you are. I am just curious to see how much we put into this team.
For one person, it can be a distraction from the work day. For another, it could be an obsession cuz they just love hockey (and the Devils). :)
I tried to make the options broad, but I guess I failed. :(

I'm kinda like you then. I yell more at games about whats going on - I like to stay in the game. I'll chant, but not at the expense at missing the action.

I love my teams to the point where I'm truly emotionally affected by things. The impact of losing sometimes seriously makes me miserable the next day. The reason I say "we" when referring to them is because I somehow feel like I'm part of the team. Plus I'm so superstitious I will wear the same clothes to every game I go to (clean of course.) so long as we keep winning. Last season of the 10 or so games I went to we lost 2: One opening night, one against the Rags in March or whatever.
I mean did my clothes have any impact? Of course not...but I like to believe I can help the team because as they go, so do I. To me that's what makes them special to me...they're part of who I am, I experience the emotional ups and downs along side them and I'm always going to support them.
I went through a span of years where I almost never watched hockey right after the 00 cup. I missed the entire 01 season and only caught the ECF against Pitt and then most of the SCF.
But even having strayed from the game because I was always out and never around, I checked the papers for the scores and standings all season, I knew everyone on the roster and I still wanted to crucify myself after game 7.
I'm still a poor college student (now with a kid) to get STH. But I plan on having them once my son is about 5 so that he can enjoy this team as much as I do. :yo:
njdevils1982 08-15-2008, 02:31 AM im proud to say....i'm all of them.
OT: imagine a "chico eats" where he eats a fish taco. so wrong. :s

ILikeItVeryMuch 08-15-2008, 08:35 AM At games I always have a beer in my hand and the loudest mouth in my section
That one.
I have seen alot of Quebec plates on the parkway the last two weeks, I always pull up next to them and tap the logo on my Devils hat.
cj225 08-15-2008, 09:08 AM I went with Option #1, although I don't paint my face. Did that once, we lost, never did it again!
I'm extremely crazy...but I fit into a lot of those categories. Since I don't drink at games, I couldn't pick that one! But I sure do have the loudest mouth in the section (just ask the people that either sit by me or have sat around me)!
I'm also this one: I love sporting my various Devils collectibles, and I also have stuff at work (wall calendar, mouse pad, and magnetic calendar...if I didn't think stuff would be stolen, I'd have more).
And EVERY day...I always use my Devils travel mug for my tea and it sits on my desk all day after I'm done drinking it.

Brodeur2007 08-15-2008, 09:17 AM "I love sporting my various Devils collectibles, whether they be signed jerseys, cup pins, or banners"
I've only been a fan since '03, literally on Game 7 against Anaheim. But, only because I'm 13 right now. I still know a load of things from the times before I was a fan.
Anyways, I have Devils bobbleheads, Devils jersey, Brodeur poster, signed towel, Team picture, Bruce Driver signed picture, and some other stuff. But luckily my sister-in-law's mom (mother-in-law?) works at some hotel where the Devils stay in regularly. They leave all this stuff here and offer her all these cool things. Before they offered her game tickets, but that was before she knew me.
But they offered her a helmet, or a goalie mask, not sure which one. She quickly took it and I'm awaiting for it to reach into my heads. Consider me lucky.

CMac17 08-15-2008, 10:06 AM Went with the "day in, day out" one because there was no choice of "pretty much what FTL666 said"...
Do a lot of you guys sit in the same section at games? I didn't get to see posts around here during the season yet.

Some do, some don't...but I help people around here with getting extra tickets, so I've met quite a few people from here.
And I've even met some people while on road trips (yeah for Western Canada)!
DevFan-RU- 08-15-2008, 11:39 AM I am the quiet type. I don't talk much during the game, I just focus on what's going on with the play.
Once they score.... "YEAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!"
I don't take losses too hard... except when they come at the hands of the Rangers. Ugh. Those playoffs nearly gave me an ulcer.

Mr.Krinkle 08-15-2008, 12:42 PM Definitely the drunken loudmouth of 229, well, the guy 2 rows behind me, Mike, is up there too.
A Ranger fan friend of mine comes to a lot of games, was sitting two sections over one night in the first row. It happened to be that Boston game where a blatant goal was disallowed. He cracked to me during intermission, "Dude, I didn't even have to turn around to see you standing up, raving like a madman and flipping off the ref, I could HEAR you that far away, I said, 'That's gotta be Chris', turn around and sure enough, there you are - the lone dude standing and raving, good job man"

That is the game from where the famous quotation in my signature came from...:sarcasm:
Completely OT, but came to me when writing my last statement. Quotation is a noun, quote is a verb. People misuse the word "quote" all the time and its annoying.
Taking it one step further in the OT/grammar lession...farther is distance, further is time. Doc always says the wrong thing and it annoys the hell out of me! He will always say something about the puck going further down the ice, and I'm like COME ON DOC, THIS IS YOUR JOB! SPEAK CORRECTLY!

Could be worse. He could be saying "Boooooom, you gotta score more goals to win, it's that simple."
I'll take some very subtle, poor uses of grammar over having to do with stupid ****ing rationalizations like that.

Same here, I was covered in Devils stuff that day... fittingly enough, it was "leaf appreciation day". I took home a $50 HMV gift card for clearly being the biggest fan of any team at my high school. I almost got killed, but it is one of the most memorable days of my HS life.

Me too. I was a big Colorado Rockies fan when I was a kid (although seriously, how crazy could a kid growing up in hockey-starved South Dakota be about any NHL team? I just loved everything Denver related). When they left for NJ, I threw a tantrum on the floor. My dad tried to console me, but I kept asking "why?!?" Yeah, I was pretty melodramatic back then (back then?). Anyway, I decided to keep following the Devils through the Sporting News (back when it was a newspaper), and when we landed Claude Lemieux, (hence 4check22) I became the psycho fan I am today.

I followed the Avs when Claude went to their club. When he returned, I basically lost interest. Then there was that whole 2001 thing. After that, I put them on the same level as Detroit, Philly and NY. Although, I did pull for the Wings in the SCF this past year because of Rafy.

Flyers fans are some of the dumbest in hockey. They may be large in numbers but about 2.74131 actually know something about the game of hockey.
I went to a Flyers/Devils game two years ago at the Wachoffia Center and of course I was getting heckled by this fat mess of a woman next to me in a Recchi jersey. I just stayed silent and let the piggy have her fun, but then I overheard her ask her brother/husband where Recchi was. She started frantically looking through the program and began speculating why he wasn't out there. She began trashing Hitch for "scratching" him and had the nerve to call him fat. Finally, I couldn't resist so I leaned over and with a slight grin on my face I softly said, "Recchi was signed by the Penguins 2 years ago". I saw her world come crashing down and it felt so good. She didn't say a word after that and left after the 2nd period...she probably went to that overrated **** hole Geno's to eat her feelings.
BenedictGomez 08-16-2008, 02:18 AM I am the quiet type. I don't talk much during the game, I just focus on what's going on with the play.
The above describes me perfectly too, although I have been known to flip-out on the refs occasionally or insult Les Habitants fans in French. I went with "old" though even though I'm not old, but I was a little kid right when the Devils came to NJ and can remember going to games in the early 80s and being obsessed by about 85.
Definitely the drunken loudmouth of 229
Krinkle has his STs in the exact same row as me and I can vouch. He's one of the louder in the section and usually has some form of adult bevy in hand. I'd also note that he's "The Flash" in that 3.2 nanoseconds after the clock reads 0.00 it seems he's pulling a Carl Lewis down the tunnel and out the building.

I'm sort of the type of person who knows the most random facts and stats about the Devils and some players. I'm also one of those fans who likes the players that no one has ever heard of or that no one likes. Some of my personal heroes and Steven Guolla, Bob Corkum, and Reid Simpson (I miss old Reid. Should have never traded him to Chicago in 97).
DevFan-RU- 08-17-2008, 07:15 PM Yeah, I'll be honest, I don't remember too much about the lineups pre-2000.

Smattering of Jacket fans (most in Columbus itself), too many penguins fans from the Mario bandwagon years, and yes - tons of Red Wings fans who don't even know the Devils swept them in '95. :shakehead
This is NFL country - all Red/Bengals with an average IQ of about 80 I'd estimate.

80 is being gracious. I spent 2 weeks in Ohio once, out in Miami county. I want those 2 weeks back.

Easy killer - I was raised in Miami county... if you were in Piqua, Bradford or Sidney... that doesn't count - seriously. Atypical of most Ohians.

I could never handle places like that, expecially after working in manhattan. I would never want to live at a place where I had to "go into town" to buy things. It also seems like people in those locations do everything so slowly for no apparent reason.

Living away from your favorite team kinda blows. Whenever I celebrate a win, all I end up doing is pissing everyone off because I it reminds them that the Devils have so much more success than the Bruins. :naughty: Which is bad because most people in Boston are naturally pissed off all the time. That's why I try to keep the celebration to just my house so I don't remind Bruins fans where their team could be if they didn't trade away Jumbo Joe.
Mr.Krinkle 08-21-2008, 01:52 PM The above describes me perfectly too, although I have been known to flip-out on the refs occasionally or insult Les Habitants fans in French. I went with "old" though even though I'm not old, but I was a little kid right when the Devils came to NJ and can remember going to games in the early 80s and being obsessed by about 85.
Haha thanks for backin me up! And yeah I'm usually out as quick as possible because we noted that we have to get to the PATH usually about 10 mins after the buzzer or we have to sit there for a half hour. It sucks having to take 3 forms of public transit home (path to light rail to bus) but it sure beats driving!
I am also quick as hell running down during TV timeouts to get beers, they really need beer dudes in the stand, but then again, maybe not, I spend enough money at that place as is.
Oh and I can attest to BG"s French speaking ability, I was thrown off once when he started railing at these Habs fans in french, confused the crap outta them and me, it was quite funny.

I know exactly where you are coming from. Its never worth it. I talk a little too much, mostly in defense, but I know my limits.
I personally never have gotten into a fight at a game but I have pulled people off of other people time and again. The Devils/Flyers games at CAA were legendary.
I have two great stories from last season. My friend had his head smashed into a Newark-Penn waiting room window. A *gasp* 45 year old Rangers fan bumped him obviously on purpose and started walking away, my friend went up to him, the guy told him to **** off and pushed him so my buddy dropped his shoulder into the guy and knocked him down, keep in mind this is right after a Devils/Rangers game at Newark/Penn, basically this is a powderkeg. Of course the Rangers fan 6 foot 6 friend comes over and grabs his neck and slams it against the aforementioned window, I am amazed that window wasnt broken. Myself and about 5 other guys Devils and Rangers fans alike broke it up before cops got wind. When the beer is flowing it can get insane.
My personal favorite story was also from last season. During Game 2 there was this Rangers fan wearing a suit sitting 2 rows down from me and my girlfriend. The guy was doing the usual Rangers fan ranting about how the Rangers have more fans than the country of China or something and how he was some successful lawyer (kid looked like DJ Qualls) , so I kindly asked him why someone so well off is sitting with poor college kids in the upperdeck, surely he could have gotten more expensive tickets. He responded with more nonsense about how great he is so I told him he probably worked in a mailroom, a joke that was a hit with us Devils fans sitting around him. He got really pissed and kept on ranting, then "Running w/the Devil" came on the PA, so I sang "Running w/ a suit on" and the guy lost it and eventually got escorted out since he was pissing off the entire section. Good Times.

No, I was in 241 in the old arena. But, the game that you're talking about consisted of 3 fights in the rowdy corners of 218, 228, and 241! And I did start the verbal abuse but then it just got outta hand from there.
There was one this year during the 1st Devils/Rangers game and there was a kid that looked like Harry Potter who started with me and when he walked back to his section some Devils fans took care of him!
