Marty still number one in most fans' eyes?

The NHL is full of the best goalies in the game of hockey, on a night to night basis we have the privilege to watch great goaltending performances all across the league. We get to watch the positionally sound goalies make things look easy, we get to watch the ultra quick goalies with great reflex’s make highlight real stops and we get to watch the unorthodox goalies who will do anything to keep the puck from going into the net.

Here are the best goalies in the NHL:

Martin Brodeur - 2007/2008 - 77 GP - 44 wins - 2.17 GAA - .920 SV%

Just when you think he is about to slow down he has a Vezina winning season in 2007/2008. During the course of his career Martin has been an elite goalie and I fully expect him to continue this pace for this upcoming season.

I pretty much agree, last year I thought your guys Devils would drop but Marty and your whole team played great all year from my outside perspective.

How many more years do you guys think he has left at his elite level and do you think he will stick around in his late ages holding on to any glory as a backup or anything?

As long as he's healthy I think he'll until age 40. I don't see him as a back up or in another NHL sweater.

he can tutor goalies as an assistant coach, I wouldn't like to see marty backing up somebody.

Non-Devils fan here, but an admirer of the organization and of the best goalie of this generation. So, I'll chime in, if no one minds:

There is every reason to count on Brodeur producing several more seasons of top-end netminding. The great ones often (not always) excel longer into their careers, they simply have an extended shelf-life, which is why they are GREAT. That is not to suggest that Brodeur at 39 will be the Brodeur of 29. But as a point of comparsion, recall Scott Stevens at the end of his career. Different position, I know, but he remained an invaluable asset on the backline. Hasek was very servicable up until age 40 or so.

Bank on Lou & Co. not giving much thought to the goaltending position for at least a couple of more seasons, and riding that horse named Brodeur well into the sunset.

The funny thing is, I recall VIVIDLY a thread on HF in 2001 where some were speculating when Ari Ahronen was going to take the reigns over from Marty. After all, Marty was age 30 or so at the time! I recall laughing hysterically at the time.
