I don't think they're showing the opening til tonight here. I haven't checked the direct TV feeds that they promised us yet though.

Does anyone know if Doc is calling Water Polo again? That was the best in Sydney, at work my boss was flipping through the satellite feeds and I heard Doc going nuts and perked up and said something stupid like "Holy **** there's hockey in this???"

We ended up watching the bulk of the water polo tourney just because he was calling it.

Every year, they remove and add sports to the Games, so with it's growing there is always a possibilty that MMA can be included in the future. They've considered skateboarding for christ's sake.

No it was not on this morning. I watched it live but I had to watch the BBC feed that was being streamed over the internet.

I wasn't that impressed with the opening ceremony. Except for the torch lighting that was insane it seemed run of mill.

As for the games as mentioned they are not on live in US and this mornings ceremony has not yet be shown over here unless you live close to the Canadian border to get CBC or you got one of those handy internet feeds that float around.

Trautwig just said something about how watching these gymnasts has been a treat. Aren't they like 16 years old? That's gross...

Between him and that windbag Costas, I turned off the gymnastics competition last night. Seriously, how many feel good stories do we need? Yes, we get it, these people work hard and want to win. We also get that terrible things happen to people. This is the Olympics, not 20/20 With Barbara Walters. Stick to the sports.

And what is up with their random commercial breaks, watching water polo has been painful, Italy and Russia were in a thriller....Italy is up 9-8, Russia has the ball, Italy makes a stop, 38 seconds left in the game, no warning, no nothing. 'UP NEXT ROGER FEDERER!' and a two minute montage of pictures of Roger.

Then like 3 minutes later they come back and show the final 30 seconds of the match, Italy hangs on to win. Then more commercials.

The hell???

It's important to remember that NBC does not air the Olympics like it is a sporting event. They air it as more of a soap opera geared to non-sports fans. As such you get tape delays and interruptions at critical times (the US-China game was shown on the west coast after it was already over). It also doesn't help that the IOC doesn't allow commercial breaks so unless you are watching a team USA game you are going to miss part of the event. It's awful come winter time and the non-US hockey games.

Is this something they've come out as saying is their mission statement or whatever? The fact that I see, "NBC SPORTS" everywhere and not "NBC DAYTIME" or "THE TODAY SHOW" everywhere makes it a bit misleading.

I understand the need for all the drama and whatnot, but last night, they stopped airing all the pure sports on the partner networks and the only option you had was Ranger Al salivating over little girls and Bob Costas blabbering on about some more human interest crap. Sure there's a market for people who want that, but why subject the rest of us to that?

Actually I don't think the department is officially NBC Sports. I believe the official name is NBC Sports and Olympics.

The events are all worth the same. It's just that China is so damned good at the vault that the difficulty gets amped up, thus a much higher score.

I think they meant that some events are just traditionally higher scoring because the judges just like them better and will dole out higher difficulty scores much easier. Either that or, as stupid as it sounds, it's far easier and less riskier to do a very difficult high bar routine than it is to do a difficult floor exercise; so you'll see teams opt to go for broke in high bar and just cruise through floor.

Yeah, we suck.

Most of our medals will probably come in rowing and maybe Alexandre Depatis (sp?) in diving. Other than that, we aren't very strong at anything and have some remote chances at bronze in other events (softball, women's football, etc.)

Predictions of 12 - 17 medals for Canada at these games were vastly overrated in my opinion.

Edit: by we, I mean the Canadian Olympic team, not that I have any chance of remotely making the team so I should say "they" suck and not include myself even though I suck even more and now I am just rambling and hope that someone finds this remotely amusing since I can go on like this forever without a pause in my sentence or a stop in the fluidity of this sentence but you are probably getting bored of reading this about now and so I should stop at some point in time but if you are still reading this it's your own fault and not mine so don't blame me if you haven't stopped reading by now because I am really just wasting your time with random words put in a sentence to continue to amuse you but you probably aren't thinking it's funny anny more but I can't stop now because you are expecting so much more and this is like the song that never ends but I won't sing it because it's probably already in your head and is driving you nuts right now but that's your fault for reading this far and not stopping by now and you know that I can continue this on for a much longer time but I think I will stop now.

Exactly... and the floor routines did not deserve that low of a score. The "fall" on the pommel horse by the first guy for the US - even the commentator was flabbergasted that they scored him THAT low... definitely some predetermined outcomes being steered to during those last 3 rotations. The Japanese difficulty was silly easy on the high bar too.

Games organizers confirm that Lin Miaoke, who performed "Ode to the Motherland" as China's flag was paraded Friday into Beijing's National Stadium, was not singing at all.

Lin was lip-syncing to the sound of another girl, 7-year-old Yang Peiyi, who was heard but not seen, apparently because she was deemed not cute enough.
Another said, "If foreigners found out, they'd think we can't even find a girl who is good at both."
True that - 1.3(?) billion people and they can't find a kid who can sing and look cute? Pitiful that they deemed the kid who actually sang "not cute enough" :shakehead

That's not the only thing they faked. The fireworks were pre-taped and cg enhanced in order for them to show up good on tv through the smog.

it begins already? "mighta been a little harsh" (regarding Johnson's bars score)

we know those "ultra-little-need-to-rewind-50-times-and-go-to-super-slo-mo" deductions will only go against the Americans.

Yea, it take 10 minutes to get US scores because they rewind and zoom in to catch every possibly mistake. China's scores are decided as soon as their routine starts.

The swimmers who qualify the highest go in the middle. The people who qualify the slowest are in the outer lanes.

Holy ****. Complete and utter domination. Almost FIVE SECONDS shaved off the world record time. That was insane.

I was a little worried when the announcers were talking so casually before the race about how the US should win it easily, but clearly they knew what they were talking about. How are no other countries even close?

I can almost see them start doing qualifying heats where you can't beat your qualifying time in the finals or you're disqualified like drag racing then bringing in staggered starts. how much would that suck?

Gymnastics is fun to watch, but it frustrates me so much because it's not completely objective. Of course it doesn't help that I'm biased and I know nothing about scoring (except that falling is bad), so I always think the US should be higher.
