Brent Sutter, New Jersey
He has the pedigree and the long NHL playing career, and he did a great job with the family's Red Deer Rebels before joining the Devils. If he causes Lou Lamoriello to stop treating coaches as disposable, Sutter really will have proven himself.

Tom Renney="proven"???

LOL ROTFLMAO :biglaugh:

oh please, he doesn't even belong on the same page as Carlyle, Hitchcock & Laviolette.

Once again, the NYR ranked way too high in yet another silly, flavor of the month category rank/poll.

agree with you 100% but the lists doesn't do a good job separating good coaches and coaches that have just been with the same team for more then a couple of years. instead it goes with coaches who have been around the league for a good couple of years to coaches who are fairly new which makes this list just a waste of my time.

As much as I hate to admit it, it is hard to put Sutter up with some of those coaches yet. He still has to have a couple more good seasons at the NHL level.

Will he be there someday, and with the Devils? I think so.

Sutter moved up to my 2nd favorite Devils coach (head coach that is) after his Brooks-ish move of making the team ride the bikes after a game early last season. He might have even made it to the No.1 spot and displaced Pat Burns had he actually held a full practice. :)

These are the only rankings important to me - Where our head coaches rank related to each other. Here's my quick list without much thought (based mostly on coaching Style and attitude more than net results)

Burns
Sutter
Robinson
Lemaire
Lou*
Schoenfeld
Brooks
Constantine
Ftorek
[all others]
[all stickboys]
[all vendors]

Burns was the best coach we had. If you were going on net results, I'd have to put Lemaire at 2nd.

I think Constantine and Ftorek should be lower.

If I were to rank, my top four would be Burns, Lemaire, Sutter, Robinson in that order. Ftorek would be below [all others] while Constantine would be somewhere just below the stickboys.

Despite his failure at NJ, I've studied Kevin's coaching styles and even have his coaches training tutorial with drills and philosophies and I must say I was impressed at his technical approach to the game. It just didn't transfer well to NJ or their players - but I like his approach. Ftorek was a grump, which I like in my coaches. :) Hence Burns & Sutter where they are and Madden being my favorite player.

As long as you like grumpy gusses, that's fine. Ftorek was good at developing players in Albany but couldn't get either team to do anything in game situations. I just never liked Constantine.

 c'mon now RG, didn't you read the article? Julien clearly just fell victim to a "raw deal" :sarcasm:

I'm going Burns and then Robinson, then Sutter/Ftorek t3. I have a really good feeling Sutter will be right there fighting for #1 by the end of this decade (cue the 'train) but for now, I can't fully place him above the following (in no particular order):

1) Ftorek dragging a bloodied Pando out from the tunnel in game vs. DET, mixed with tossing that bench onto the ice - absolute classic.

2) whatever the **** Robinson said after game 4 of the '00 ECF. MAN I want to know. Automatic #2 for sparking the best series ever.*

* - points lost for blaming players for everything that goes wrong and allowing people to give full credit to coaching staff for anything good that happens NOT factored into ranking

I have Burns and Lemaire tied and then Robinson. After that does it matter. Of course Sutter needs to prove himself in the NHL to be with my top 3.

The O-train is back:handclap: Thanks Brit.

I like Burns myself, with Lemaire 1a. Honestly, still on the fence with Sutter. He had a few "junior coaching" moments and way too much line juggling. Let's see season 2 of the Brent show, hope it's a good watch!

Once again, the NYR ranked way too high in yet another silly, flavor of the month category rank/poll.I think Renney still has to prove that he can take the Rangers to the next level. He has guided a franchise that hadn't been in the playoffs for seven seasons to three straight playoff appearances.

One thing is surely certain, Renney out-coached Brent Sutter when the two men's clubs went head-to-head 13 times. Renney went 11-1-1 (11-0-2 if you want to the single playoff loss as an OTL.)

And unfortunately, that is precisely why he is so high on that list.

Making the playoffs 3 seasons in a row may be a milestone for a pathetic franchise like the NYR, but it certainly doesn't qualify one for entrance into the pantheon of proven/great coaching.

There's a good chance Renney will not even last the season. A 4th year in a row of an early playoff exit will seal his doom, if he even makes it that far.

My top 3 Devils coaches are:
1. Lemaire
2. Burns
3. Robinson

For me it was a toss-up between Lemaire and Burns, but gave the edge to Lemaire because he was the one who brought/introduced a style of play to the Devils that stayed with the team for many years after and still does in some ways. IMO his style of coaching and systems paved the way for coaches like Burns and Robinson to come on board because their systems were similar to Lemaire's successful formula.

oh come now, they don't need Jagr & Shanahan, after all, they are now built to be, "younger & faster", which is nothing more than a code word for the lunacy of building a playoff-caliber team and watching like 15 of your key players all becoming UFA's on exactly the same day.
